Bulletin August 2020 11 Bulletin Editor At the previous Council meeting it had been noted that production of the Bulletin was falling behind on its scheduled print and delivery times This was having an effect on time speci c advertising job vacancies and was largely due to late copy submission Timeframes have been brought forward and will be strictly adhered to Copy must be received by 23rd of the month for publication two months later eg 23rd March for publication in the May issue This applies to all normal copy articles book reviews NIO forum etc Advertising and job vacancies will need to be discussed with PRC as other timeframes may apply Communications Group The West Middlesex Branch Trade Day was a good event with lots of interest at the IAT stand Tech Month was launched and some establishments managed to hold events prior to lockdown The quiz had proved popular Amazon vouchers were awarded to weekly winners and the overall winner Participation in the quiz each week Week 1 155 people Week 2 123 people Week 3 92 people Week 4 65 people Regular e newsletters have been sent out during lockdown At the beginning of lockdown the IAT launched a mental health initiative This has proved to be very popular It was agreed that Tech Month would be re visited later in the year If it is too late it runs the risk of running into Tech Month 2021 but it was felt that it is a good way to raise the pro le of Technicians and thank them for their hard work during the pandemic This could perhaps be more of a Branch event for 2020 It will be discussed at the next Comms Group meeting Branch and BING Liaison An update from the Branch and BING Reps meeting held prior to the Council meeting was given 1 The group would like to re visit Tech Month later in the year 2 It would be good if the IAT could lobby the relevant people to recognise the work Animal Technicians have done once the pandemic is over They also suggested collecting quotes to circulate 3 The group agreed to promote the e newsletter and suggested a poster to promote signing up IAT AUG20 indd 11 20 07 2020 08 15

Bulletin August 2020 13 Diversity Group Two recent initiatives had been launched with the aim of promoting wellbeing and positive mental health Mental health article It s OK not to be Okay Covid 19 It s OK to not be Okay Euthanasia with input from various people A strategy was being developed to send out a survey to Animal Technicians in the UK and then to start looking at setting up support in various ways such as online meetings working groups network groups focusing on various issues raised as a result of the survey Council felt that it was appropriate to widen the remit of the Diversity Of cer There are other areas which can be focussed on in addition to mental health The Diversity Of cer will look at forming a group and how such a group could support and inform technicians within the industry AGM The 2020 AGM had been scheduled to take place at AST2020 on Tuesday 24th March This had not happened The previous AGM was held on 9th March 2019 According to the IAT Articles of Association AoA an AGM has to be held within 15 months of the previous meeting and in order to be quorate has to have 50 members in attendance If the meeting is not quorate it can be adjourned At the adjourned time if after half an hour the meeting is not quorate it can proceed anyway Covid 19 has obviously created an extreme situation It was suggested that either an AGM could be held via Zoom or perhaps recorded and streamed via the IAT website It was agreed that as the next Council meeting is due to be held on 8th July the AGM could follow this meeting at 16 00 hours IAT AUG20 indd 13 20 07 2020 08 15

Bulletin August 2020 17 As the learning outcomes covered a wide range of topics from the basics of chemistry and pharmacology up to relevant toxicity testing I was able to evaluate the importance of toxicology through a case study as part of the final assessment Completing this module helped me to fill in previous grey areas in my chemistry understanding further my knowledge on toxicity testing and also understand the role of study director in relation to good laboratory practice Overall the course was a great experience As always the AS ET bursary award and the College of Laboratory Animal Science and Technology CLAST gave me a great opportunity to study these subjects to get together with other Animal Technologists from all over the country at the teaching sessions or simply study with friends from previous courses Once again I thank AS ET for all their support in helping me to grow in my role and achieve my goals through education Apart from the opportunity to study topics that are new to us or of which we may only have a superficial knowledge one important aspect of attending a course that we underestimate is the ability to mix with other students and in the process develop friendships that will sustain students for many years to come IAT AUG20 indd 17 20 07 2020 08 15
