Ontario Mutuals is proud to be the presenting partner of the Ontario Queen of the Furrow competition The competition allows young women to promote and increase their involvement in agriculture throughout their communities During the competition the Queens enhance their leadership and public speaking skills and act as role models for young girls to inspire them to get involved in agriculture Annually there are hundreds of young women across the province who compete in Queen of the Furrow competitions The competitions are first held at a regional level Regional Queens become ambassadors of their communities and their local Plowmen s Association Throughout the year the Queens attend many local events farm shows fairs and the Ontario Plowmen s Association Annual Convention In September the Queens head to the International Plowing Match where they compete for the Ontario Queen of the Furrow title They are judged on their plowing ability appearance and deportment an interview a prepared speech and an impromptu speech Last year s winner was Kailey Donaldson of Halton Region OM News had the opportunity to catch up with Kailey to ask her about her reign as Queen and what the Queen of the Furrow competition means to her 44 Where did you grow up Acton Ontario Have you and your family always been involved in Agriculture In what capacity My father grew up on a farm and throughout the years we have stayed involved either with raising steers through our auction business showing cattle plowing matches 4 H or the fair board I ve always enjoyed being a part of this great industry What does the Ag community mean to you To me the Agriculture community is something I m proud to be a part of It s a community where people can relate to one another in struggles and accomplishments on a daily and seasonal basis I think that s what makes the people in the industry so caring understanding and compassionate It is a strong bond not only through small communities but across the province and even the country A great example is seeing how an Agriculture community works together when planning the IPM It truly takes a great team of volunteers and it is so wonderful to see this happening currently in Chatham Kent Where did you get your post secondary education What did you study and why For my post secondary education I went to University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus I received an Associate Diploma in Agriculture

I chose this pathway as it seemed like a natural fit having always loved equipment and livestock I could not see myself being involved in any other industry How did you get started in the Queen of the Furrow Competition Why was it important to you to get involved I always knew about the Queen of the Furrow Competition because I plow at local matches My Region actually didn t have the competition for about 13 years In 2016 the Halton Plowmen s Association decided to bring it back and that s when I was crowned at my local level The Queen of the Furrow program was important for me to get involved in as I love being an ambassador for Agriculture and I enjoyed the thought of representing the IPM Once I was involved I realized how amazing it was to build confidence meet new people and learn more about the Agriculture industry What did you like best about the Queen of the Furrow competition The thing I liked most about the Queen of the Furrow competition is being able to connect with approximately 25 other ladies who are passionate about Agriculture and share the same mindset It s also a great way to get out of your comfort zone and really learn who you are What do you think you ve learned through this process There are many things I ve learned from the Queen of the Furrow Competition but the main thing would be to believe in yourself I think it s important to not underestimate the impact you can have It s a big competition and a busy reign as Queen However you find out what you re capable of once you give it a try How has your year been as the Queen so far My year as Queen so far has been amazing Traveling across Ontario promoting the IPM The Ontario Plowmen s Association and the Agriculture Industry has been a great experience I ve gone to different events such as fairs banquets farm shows and more I ve gotten to create new friendships explore different communities and really take in how the International Plowing Match brings people and communities together Of course the best is yet to come with the busy plowing season just ahead and the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in September Do you see yourself staying in the Ag Community in some capacity I will definitely stay involved with the Agriculture community it always has been apart of my life and I look forward to what the future brings What are your thoughts on the importance of women in Agriculture Women in Agriculture has been a popular topic in the more recent years for a good reason In the past women may have been in the background of the operation and today there are more women taking on the leadership roles I also think it s important to look at the industry as a whole and not segregated We can all wear different hats and contribute to the agriculture community male or female Do you have a message for the young women preparing for this year s Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition The number one thing I would tell the young women preparing for this year s Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition is to be yourself It is really important to show who you are as a person and what is truly important to you Of course remember to have fun and to make the most out of this amazing opportunity Thanks Kailey See you at the IPM September 18th to 22nd August 2018 45
