Bulletin August 2015 5 174th July 2015 Council Meeting Synopsis Ken writes I wish to start by saying how honoured I am following a ballot at the May Council meeting to be elected for a second tenure as Chair of Council I would like to thank my predecessor Steve Owen for all his work over the previous four years and hope Steve enjoys his year as Immediate Past Chair Council officers are traditionally elected at the May Council Meeting and I am delighted that not only do we have some newly elected officers but also six new Council members who I m sure will bring fresh ideas IAT Council now has a full complement of 25 Council members so hopefully we will soon return to having elections which not only generates interest but is a sign of a dynamic and vibrant organisation While a synopsis of all Council meetings can be found on the Members Section of the website I thought I would write occasional updates for the Bulletin on recent activities of the Institute adding a bit of explanation along the way Council Activities Council made the decision earlier this year to employ PLMR Political Lobbying and Media Relations to actively promote the well received

6 August 2015 Bulletin IAT Career Pathway and the IAT Qualifications both in the UK and Europe In July PLMR reported that current progress included G G G G G drafting content for the new IAT website and liaising closely with Allan Thornhill and the PLMR website team to accommodate a redesign which should launch in August preparing all briefing materials ahead of engagement with corporate academic signatories of the IAT Career Pathway securing and attending meetings with the various organisations to gauge their support of the Career Pathway drafting and distributing a press release on the launch of the IAT Career Pathway securing coverage for the launch of the IAT Career Pathway in drug discovery Council already has a number of key indices of success for this initiative and these will be reviewed and discussed at the September Council meeting In response to requests from the Youth Representatives the IAT App was developed by Allan Thornhill launched in July and is published on both the Apple Store and the Google Play Store for android users The Branch Reps met on the morning of the May Council meeting with eleven out of thirteen Branches represented along with three Youth Reps to experience the meeting There were very few questions with several Branches reporting that there were no specific issues of concern The IAT Career Pathway was also commended as being very clear and easy to follow Congress Congress 2015 was fully reported in the Bulletin along with results of the feedback survey which had been circulated to all attendees There were many comments on the standard of accommodation and whether varied rates can be offered in future While it is impossible to locate a perfect venue for Congress where ideally all attendees would stay in the same hotel logistically this is not always possible That said Congress Committee will continue to source the best venues available while keeping costs at an affordable level On a positive note the Branch raffle at Congress had raised 2 300 for Guide Dogs Association and Council had agreed to make this up to 2 500 which is sufficient to name a Guide Dog The name TAI IAT backwards was

Bulletin August 2015 7 suggested to the Guide Dogs Association and Council thanks everyone for their generous support The Congress Committee met with Trade Exhibitors prior to the July Council meeting and various issues relating to Congress 2016 were discussed including trade exhibition opening and closing times booking processes etc Feedback from this year s exhibiting companies was received and will be addressed Registration for Congress 2016 will be online only and will open on 14th September Various delegate options will be available from one day attendance to the full Congress package running from Tuesday through to Friday breakfast The website will carry updated information on the programme for Congress 2016 There will be a change in the scientific programme to include more workshops including the Tuesday afternoon Full details and timings will be available on the website and will be regularly updated www iat org uk congress html Education and CPD An Educational Stakeholders meeting was held on the Tuesday of Congress 2015 at the Congress venue and a full report was circulated to all attendees and Council There was discussion regarding RAnTechs with two main discussion points concerns were raised that there are no meetings or tangible recognition following the RAnTech interview and acceptance onto the Register G RAnTech CPD is supposed to be checked but there is a lot of confusion over what constitutes CPD and how it is recorded The proposed actions from these discussions were G consider combining RAnTechs with NACWO Named Persons meetings G need to call in 10 of CPD Records electronically to ensure CPD is being maintained G review CPD minimum requirements for example consider an enhanced level for original personal research presentations G The IAT awarded 86 Diplomas during the first quarter 2015 reporting period 61 x Level 2 Laboratory Animal Science and Technology 64 x Level 2 Laboratory Animal Husbandry 21 x Level 3 Laboratory Animal Science and Technology

8 August 2015 Bulletin Two new IAT Moderators have been appointed They are Theresa Langford and Anthony Iglesias It is hoped that from September all students registering for IAT qualifications will be able to do so online The first two Animal Technician Level 2 Apprenticeship students will complete their courses in August or September this year and we hope the scheme will then be rolled out nationally This is a very exciting development and the IAT are working closely with the Medical Research Council and others to ensure its success College of Laboratory Animal Science and Technology CLAST has now been established as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation CIO to facilitate the delivery of the IAT HE Levels 4 5 and 6 from September 2015 CLAST is independent from the IAT and will be self funding relying primarily on income generated from student fees I am delighted to report that the South African Veterinary Council and South African Laboratory Animal Science Association SAALAS have formally adopted the IAT qualifications Cathy Godfrey Chair of the Board of Moderators will travel to Pretoria in November to further promote the IAT qualifications and the Career Pathway Animal Technology and Welfare ATW Jas Barley ATW Editor reported that the themed December issue will be on Behaviour species natural history If anyone has any submissions or has contacts with anyone who may be able to submit a paper they should contact Jas Communications The Communications Group designed five Benefits of the IAT posters which have been circulated to all IAT Corporate member establishments to display The posters have also been produced in postcard size as giveaways for example on the IAT stand at various meetings They also form the designs of the new IAT promotional stands The Communications Group will once again be running a photography competition which will be judged at Congress 2016 The aim is to find photographs which can be used on the front covers of ATW and the Bulletin and should preferably be portrait and a minimum of 3MB in size

Bulletin August 2015 Ken s View I was having a discussion with a friend who said that life is all about choices I disagreed because for me life is all about opportunities because without opportunities there is no choice I am grateful that the IAT offered me the opportunity to study for qualifications and I am now in a position to try and ensure that these opportunities continue to exist All I ask is that you as individuals and employers alike take advantage of the IAT s educational and CPD opportunities and when you are in a position to help others you do so willingly Ken Applebee Chair IAT Council 9

Bulletin August 2015 13 Professor John Bleby Hon FIAT TD JP DVetMed DLAS CBiol FSB MRCVS It is with great sadness to inform you that John Bleby passed away after a long illness on Sunday 19th July aged 83 As you can see from John s postnominal letters John was extremely active as a laboratory animal veterinary surgeon latterly owner of Surrey Diagnostics and a Justice of the Peace John will be known to many members as an active Vice President of the Institute and in recognition of his tremendous support and encouragement of animal technologists he was awarded Honorary Fellowship at a Symposium in his honour in 2012 John was an amusing generous and kind friend to many and our thoughts go to his widow Jayne his family and all those who mourn him Ken Applebee Chair of Council

Bulletin August 2015 23 Ireland Branch Symposium 2015 T his year s Ireland Branch Symposium was held at Trinity College Dublin TCD on 28th May and once again it was very well attended attracting over 40 delegates plus trade stands along with their representatives reflecting the wide variety of companies within our Industry The opening of the symposium took place in the Stanley Quek Hall The one day platform programme consisted of six speakers each presenting very interesting and different topics The morning session was chaired by Mark D Alton from University College Dublin UCD and the first speaker was Ken Applebee Fellow and IAT Council Chair Ken gave an overview on the IAT s current activities its educational offering the Career Pathway and how these contribute to enhancing animal welfare Ken also stressed how important it is for Animal Technologists to keep up to date with current technology and to take advantage of continuing professional development CPD opportunities The second speaker of the day was Steve Barnett who is a Vice President of the IAT and also a Trustee of Animals in Science Education Trust AS ET Steve has had a long career within animal technology both at technician level and as lecturer and editor of the IAT Manual of Animal Technology Steve explained how the charity AS ET was formed to advance education and promote excellence Ken Applebee first presenter of the day in the care and welfare of animals in science The charity makes provision for bursaries which contribute towards course fees travel and accommodation development of teaching packages course materials including handbooks and videos provision of web based learning development and provision of block release summer schools and tutorials and supporting students with special needs Steve took the opportunity to promote the charity ball to be held in a prestigious London hotel on 5th September celebrating the 5th anniversary year of AS ET

24 August 2015 Bulletin Finally Steve reminded those present of the special travel bursary competition the winner of which will attend the AALAS National meeting in Phoenix Arizona in November Steve Barnett AS ET Fergal O Brien RCSI Dublin The last speaker before the break for lunch was Professor Fergal O Brien from the Department of Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons RCSI in Dublin Fergal heads the tissue engineering research group based in the RCSI and gave a very interesting presentation on his recent work using advanced biomaterials and tissue engineering to regenerate organs and tissues Fergal went on to discuss how this work has benefited both humans and animals in the reconstruction of tissues including bones and it recently gained publicity in the Irish Times as a great advancement in science The afternoon session was chaired by Nigel Pawsey Chair of the IAT Irish Branch and began with a presentation from Dr Richard Byrne who is a senior post doc at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge Richard spoke about his work which involved using a high fat diet to understand the role of phospholipase D proteins in lipid metabolism

Bulletin August 2015 25 Dr Karen English from National University of Ireland Maynooth NUIM in Dublin followed with her presentation on the development of a humanised mouse model of graft versus host disease A major component of her research involves the development of novel pre clinical models of inflammatory disease as a platform for testing clinically relevant cell and drug therapeutics Dr English is now expanding her research to include humanised mouse models of cell organ transplantation after being awarded a highly prestigious Science Foundation Ireland SFI grant in 2014 Nigel Pawsey chairing the afternoon session The final presentation was from Jane Lenehan from the Health Products Regulatory Authority HPRA which is the Regulatory Authority governing the use of animals in scientific procedures in the Republic of Ireland Jane is currently acting manager of the Scientific Animal Protection SAP section in the HPRA She explained the role of the HPRA in relation to laboratory animal science and the way it operates to comply with the new EU Directive and its transition into Irish legislation There followed a number of questions which Jane answered Jane Lenehan Health Products Regulatory Authority

30 August 2015 Bulletin Cambridge Branch Visit to the BlackBar Brewery 2015 http blackbar co uk O n Friday 26th June 2015 the IAT Cambridge Branch paid a second visit to the BlackBar Brewery in Harston Cambridgeshire Following a disappointing attendance but excellent event in April 2014 the Branch organised taxi transport from and return to Cambridge City for this year s event for a total cost of 11pp including beer and buffet This was in part due to the generous sponsorship and support provided by IMPEX With a similar format to the first visit Joseph Kennedy aka Brewmonkey provided a warm welcome and was very hospitable to the group of fourteen attendees We were promptly presented with drinking vessels and access to the two beers on tap for the evening Blacklight a personal favourite and BlackBar Bitter The atmosphere was casual relaxed and friendly as the buffet of delicious locally sourced fare was unveiled Following the selection of tasty cold meat cheese bread couscous salad and quiches which wonderfully complimented the beer being supped the tour commenced We were treated to a detailed overview of the brewing process with an opportunity to experience

Bulletin August 2015 31 some of the fragrance and flavours provided by the raw ingredients Did you know that to add flavour to a beer the ingredient must be added at the beginning of the brewing process but to add fragrance the ingredient must be added at the end Joseph provided great insight into his knowledge and passion for brewing BlackBar Brewery try to operate in as green a manner as possible and indeed Joseph can often be seen delivering barrels of his beer to local pubs on his adapted delivery bicycle There are even photos of Jo using a Cambridge punt a flat type of boat to get beer to the annual Cambridge Beer Festival Following the tour there was a tempting selection of cakes to relish and plenty of time to enjoy the beer in a sociable manner We were provided samples of some of the flavoursome bottled beers currently available Dovestep Major Blacklight and Dead Unicorn not as morbid as it sounds but a lament for a now defunct pub called The Unicorn There was even an opportunity to purchase a top up of beer for enjoyment at home Many thanks go to Joseph and Tony for providing another thoroughly enjoyable evening The Branch wishes BlackBar Brewery all the best in their future brewing and already look forward to our next visit A special thanks to IMPEX Services international Limited for kindly sponsoring the event Sam Jameson Branch Reporter
