7EMERGENCY SHELTER PROGRAMOur shelter provides a safe haven for 23 survivors and their children escaping domestic violence. More than just a place to stay, our shelter offers a supportive, multicultural environment where survivors can begin rebuilding their lives. Our shelter staff work closely with our community-based Advocates to provide crisis intervention, safety planning, housing advocacy, and the resources necessary for long-term stability and independenceLEGAL ADVOCACY AND REPRESENTATION PROGRAMOur program bridges the gap between the legal system and Asian domestic violence survivors who face barriers to meaningful access to justice. We provide holistic legal services, with a focus on family law and immigration law, in a safe and compassionate environment. By addressing cultural and linguistic needs, we ensure survivors receive the support necessary to navigate legal processes and secure their rights, prioritizing the cultural and linguistic needs of the survivors we serve.NEXT STEPS ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMNext Steps supports clients in achieving nancial independence through career coaching, nancial literacy, and scholarships. By centering cultural and linguistic strengths, we provide a safe space for clients to build condence, navigate barriers, and set goals, empowering them to achieve stability and self-sufciency..OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTWe work to prevent domestic violence through education, policy change, and raising awareness about family, intimate partner, and dating violence. Our cultural competency trainings equip communities and professionals working with Asian survivors with the knowledge and tools to better understand and address violence and trauma. We also host outreach events and partner with community organizations, service providers, and local leaders to expand our reach and foster collective action. In addition, we work with policymakers to ensure the unique needs of Asian families impacted by domestic violence are recognized and addressed.7

9A JOURNEY TO FREEDOM: MORAKOT & ARTHUR’S STORYWhen Morakot came to the U.S. from Thailand, she hoped for a better life. Instead, she found herself trapped in an abusive marriage, struggling to care for her children in an unfamiliar country, with no clear way out. Like many survivors, she didn’t immediately recognize her situation as domestic violence—she adapted, endured, and tried to survive. But the signs were there. Her husband controlled their nances, leaving the family without electricity or hot water. Her children bore the weight of adult responsibilities—translating documents, managing bills, and calling the police when violence erupted. When Arthur was still a child, he had to step in to protect his younger brother. It was Arthur’s words to a teacher that set change in motion. From there, a network of support—concerned educators, social workers, and eventually ATASK—helped Morakot take the steps she never thought possible. At rst, she hesitated to leave. The fear of the unknown, the worry of where her children would sleep, and the belief that no one could truly understand her situation held her back. But at ATASK, she found more than just a shelter. She found people who understood her culture, her language, and her fears. She found a community that stood with her, offering not only safety but also condence and hope. Arthur, once burdened with responsibilities beyond his years, was able to just be a teenager again. He rediscovered his love of dance, excelled in school, and graduated from Boston Latin. Today, he’s a college student at UMass, building a future once unimaginable. Now, with a home of her own and a life free from fear, Morakot helps other women who are facing the same struggles she once did. “I never knew my life could be this good,” she says. “ATASK gave me a new life.”9

12For the past 5 years, the total number of survivors served by ATASK has remained steady. Fiscal Year 2023 had a slight increase possibly due to COVID-related relief funds ending, increasing the need for support services.IMPACT REPORT (Cont.)Survivors and Children served by ATASKFor example, residents cook together, sharing dishes from their home countries, and we celebrate holidays like Lunar New Year and Diwali. Our programs are designed to help survivors build connection, resilience, and cultural pride and include art workshops, children’s activities, and movie nights and karaoke. Since 1994, ATASK’s Emergency Shelter has provided a safe haven for adults and children escaping abusive situations. It is a space that fosters community through a shared understanding of their unique challenges and the celebration of Asian culture. In addition to culturally specic case management, the shelter offers a community-building program that reects the rich cultural traditions of its residents. 12EMERGENCY SHELTER
