My name is Jay Flynn, and I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the Chandler team! Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming, and I’m looking forward to meeting all of you as soon as I can. I am originally from Salisbury, NC. I joined the U.S. Navy at 19 years old and spent the following 20 years in service of our great nation. While there, I developed a keen eye for “attention to detail” and a passion for teaching and working with people. I also developed a deep respect for family. Not only my own but others as well. My goal at the end of every day is that everyone at Chandler gets to go home safely. That said, everyone please stay vigilant, work safe, and look out for each other. GREEN-STAR BY RYAN FOLEYBrief HistoryThe foundation of the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA) Green-Star program was created in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Highways Partnership. The NRMCA Green-Star Program was designed by the Environmental Task Group of the Operations, Environmental and Safety Committee (NRMCA-OES) to support the eorts of the ready mixed concrete industry towards environmental excellence. Using Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as a tool for environmental benchmarking and continual improvement, adherence to essential environmental principles propels the industry forward as a whole.ApplicabilityThe Green-Star Program serves as a useful mechanism to recognize facilities within the industry who have achieved or are actively working towards environmental excellence and demonstrable reductions of environmental impacts, following sustainable principles. Sustainability may be defined as any development that does not erode the economic, political, societal, or environmental fabrics upon which they depend. Additionally, the program provides an opportunity for formal recognition of ready-mix companies through a rigorous, structured certification process capable of withstanding third-party oversight. Maintaining compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations is a top priority.NRMCA Green-Star Program recognizes that compliance is more than compliance with the local laws and regulations. It encompasses the integration of sound environmental practices into business decisions. These determinations incorporate risk-based, cost-eective actions into site activities with the aim of continually improving environmental performance.Chandler Concrete and the NRMCA Green-Star ProgramFollowing the NRMCA Green-Star guidelines, Chandler Concrete Company is committed to assessing the environmental impacts of its activities to base its environmental management programs and products. We are committed to reducing adverse impacts through the establishment of appropriate objectives and targets. Here at Chandler Concrete, we strive to achieve our Green-Star goals through continued completion of our plant specific goals via the NRMCA Green-Star program. Part of that process includes the identification of management responsible for pursuing Green-Star goals and in all areas of the facility. Plant specific teams ensure that all employees are aware of their individual responsibilities for acting in accordance with the NRMCA Green-Star program. We give top priority to pollution prevention, reduction, and elimination at the source. The reflection of the hierarchical system furthers our eective pollution prevention practices. Training and education will be provided to all employees, thus opening opportunities to share in the strategic plan creating unity, a common goal, and aid in the plan’s success. The Green-Star message of sustainability is reflected in our vision which strives to create a safe, healthy, and sustainable framework as a leader in the concrete industry. Our dedication to protecting, preserving, and improving the water and air quality at our locations helps protect the health and safety of our employees and the communities where we operate.6 • AS THE DRUM TURNS • SPRING 2023

In most cases, drinking on the job is not acceptable, but when the beverage of choice is two (2) parts hydrogen and one (1) part oxygen – the elements of water – Chandler encourages “bottoms up!” As spring progresses to summer, staying hydrated is paramount to maintaining good health. Water balances chemical processes in the brain, keeps the body’s systems functioning properly and aids in recovery after exercise.Water also has other important jobs:• Transports nutrients and oxygen to body cells• Flushes bacteria from the bladder• Aids digestion• Prevents constipation• Helps lower blood pressure• Protects organs and tissues• Regulates body temperature• Maintains sodium balanceProviding your body enough fluids to carry out these important tasks means you are staying hydrated.Failure to drink enough water can lead to dehydration. Warning signs include weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness, confusion or urine that is dark in color. If you begin to experience any of these symptoms, drink some water and contact your doctor. Most people need from 32 to 48 ounces of water per day. So, bottoms up for a healthier you!FSASTOREDo you need to know what items can be purchased using your medical FSA or HRA dollars?
