Aer very lengthy negoaons lasng almost 3 years, the Board are delighted to announce the acquision of The Weir Nursing Home in Swainshill near Hereford. A beauful Grade 2 listed Georgian mansion; The Weir is set in 500 acres of parkland on the bank of the River Wye. The building is secured on a 99-year lease from the Naonal Trust. We have planning consent to add an addional 10 en-suite bedrooms ulising the adjoining coach house building, work which we intend to commence at the earliest opportunity.Although the house is not open to the public, the gardens are a popular Naonal Trust aracon. The rst records of The Weir Garden date back to 1673, where Thomas Smyth is recorded to have owned the estate in the ‘Alphabecal Account of the Nobility and Gentry of England’. The Smyth line connued to live here unl 1765 when his daughter, Elizabeth became heir to the estate. Elizabeth married Timothy Markham, who was responsible for the building of impressive mansion that we now occupy. Markham appeared to have drained his funds with the new build, as in 1778 it was sold to William Parry. However, Parry, a Hereford solicitor faced a dilemma; his wife didn’t want to move to Herefordshire as she liked life in the city and to tempt his wife to the countryside, Parry promised to make huge improvements to the mansion and gardens, with advice from the renowned landscape designer, Humphry Repton. These improvements persuaded his wife to move and she stayed unl his death in 1813 when the estate was sold to John Griths, whose family owned it throughout the 19th century. Upon his death the estate passed to his eldest son, John Harward Griths who eventually moved to Staordshire with his wife and rented the estate to the Burney family, who used The Weir as their country retreat away from London. In 1923 the house was sold to Roger Charlton Parr and four years later he bought the rest of the estate making vast improvements to the mansion and grounds with the assistance of his head gardener, William Boulter. The glory days ended abruptly, with Parr’s death in 1958. Upon his death, Parr bequeathed the estate to the Naonal Trust, with one request, to let his dear friend and chaueur Victor Morris, live in the mansion unl his death in 1985. During Parr’s me, there had been six gardeners to maintain the garden. Morris hired only two part-me gardeners, who struggled with the walled garden’s upkeep and the garden suered with neglect over the next 50 years. Following Victor’s death, the mansion was converted into a Nursing Home.It is our plan to connue our acquision acvity during 2025 when we hope to add at least three more care homes to our porolio.BOARDROOMNigel Denny, CEOGary Corell, CFOChae2 | Ashberry News Winter 2025
In this issue, I am delighted to introduce our new Support Chef, Francesco Ceccarelli. Francesco brings a wealth of culinary experse, having served as Head Chef at Engelberg for the past six years. Prior to Ashberry Healthcare’s acquision of Engelberg in April 2024, Francesco was employed by the previous owners, MHA, as their Support Chef. We are excited to have him join our wider support team, where he will play a pivotal role in enhancing the dining experiences across all our homes.Francesco’s focus will be on driving improvements through rened processes, innovave techniques, updated equipment and comprehensive training for our teams. This is just the beginning of an excing journey to elevate the standards of dining for our residents. Look out for regular updates on this transformave work in future newsleers. In addion to Francesco’s appointment, I’d like to share progress on another important iniave—the rollout of our Demena Leads program. In October, we delivered specialised training to our Demena Leads in Hereford in collaboraon with Training2Care. This training equips them to champion a more progressive and person-centred approach to demena care in their homes. By shiing focus away from task-oriented care and fostering a deeper understanding of demena, our leads are commied to creang meaningful, posive changes. Their role includes delivering training, idenfying and addressing opportunies for improvement, always keeping the individual needs of residents at the heart of their work.At Ashberry Healthcare, we believe that understanding demena and all of its forms is essenal to providing exceponal care. I look forward to seeing the impact of this iniave as our Demena Leads connue to implement these changes in our Care Homes.QUALITY & COMPLIANCECLINICAL ADVISORY BOARD (CAB)We had a busy end to the year and nalised some of the projects we had been working on. I am delighted to say that we will be rolling out our “Do Not Disturb” process later this month. The aim of this is to ensure that residents and their family members can have minimal interrupon and noise levels around them at a me when peace and tranquillity are a priority. As a working group we have agreed the mes that this will be used and the team members responsible for implemenng and monitoring the use of it.Further training took place at the end of the year with sta in Wales undertaking the First Aid at Work course, this 3-day course has enabled the parcipang team members to develop their knowledge and skills to support individuals in a variety of rst aid scenarios that may occur both in our sengs and the wider community. In conjuncon with this, I was thrilled to nd out that we will be receiving debrillators in the Welsh homes in the coming days. This is essenal in supporng and potenally saving the lives of individuals who suer a cardiac arrest. As we move into 2025 our focus connues to be on supporng posive change and ensuring that we deliver evidence-based care to our many residents. We connue to reect on situaons as they occur and use them to develop our policies and processes and to learn and grow. 4 | Ashberry News Winter 2025Engelberg Care Home recently reached full occupancy, a remarkable achievement that reects the dedicaon, passion, and hard work of our enre team! To celebrate this excing milestone, the home hosted a pizza party as a way to show their appreciaon for everyone involved in making this possible. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together and recognise the collecve eort of our sta, families, and residents who all contribute to creang a warm and welcoming environment at Engelberg.A Clati OF TEAMWORKENHANCING RESIDENT WELLBEINGAs part of my role as Director of Operaons I am always very keen to improve the environment across all Ashberry homes for all our residents. As a team we are always looking for new and innovave ideas that will enhance the wellbeing of residents and give condence to families that their loved ones are being cared for in a manner that they deserve.Obviously, whilst we have an excellent team with excellent ideas here at Ashberry, we also welcome ideas and feedback from other quarters as to what it is that can be improved. We do this by conducng a twice-yearly survey inving residents, families, professionals and sta to let us know not only how well we are doing but also direct us towards areas of improvement. I can tell you that your connual engagement in these surveys is very important to us and greatly appreciated.Part of our drive for environmental improvements is to enhance exisng spaces throughout our homes. By this I mean we are focusing on improving the current facilies to beer suit the needs and comfort of our residents. For example we are reorganising and refurbishing lounges and creang seang arrangements that encourage social interacon; we are reviewing lighng across all our homes that will help enhance independence, support cognive funcon and improve moods and mental health; we are implemenng demena-friendly design principles that includes clear signage, contrasng colour schemes to aid navigaon and minimise visual cluer to create a calming atmosphere. At Meadowview Care Home we are also trialling an air purier system. The expectaon is that this will remove unpleasant odours and have a signicant impact on minimising ill-health by improving air quality throughout the home. Should this trial be successful it will be rolled out to all our other homes. In January we are also rolling out a ‘Talking Books’ iniave. Talking memory books are ideal for reminiscence therapy to aid in memory recall and provide comfort through familiar stories, songs and voices. They can be used to help ease and reassure ‘created behaviours.’ These are just some of the examples of acvies we are undertaking to ensure the wellbeing of our residents through environmental improvements. Here at Ashberry, whilst we pride ourselves in providing an excellent level of personal care, we also believe that providing a safe and pleasurable environment is just as important.Director of OperaonsClaire Fry
At Broomy Hill and Moorhouse, we have been making excing strides to enhance the dining experience for our residents. These improvements aim to create a more comfortable, dignied, and engaging atmosphere, placing residents’ choices and independence at the heart of everything we do.In Hereford, at Broomy Hill Nursing Home, the kitchen team now serves meals directly from the dining room instead of pre-plang, ensuring freshness and enabling greater exibility for residents. We have also eliminated the use of plasc plates and cups, replacing them with proper tableware to elevate the dining experience. Sta have undergone training to foster a warm and welcoming dining environment, creang a more enjoyable mealme atmosphere for residents. During meals, all sta are involved to ensure every resident receives the support they need. Residents’ preferences are now central to our service, giving them the freedom to choose their meals and dining experience. Looking ahead, we plan to further personalise the meal service with the introducon of “Meal Passports,” a tool to document and cater to each resident’s unique preferences.Following in Broomy Hill’s footsteps, Moorhouse Care Home in Surrey has also embraced excing changes to its dining experience. Residents can now select their meals with the help of “show plates” presented by the kitchen team, ensuring they make informed and sasfying choices. To encourage social interacon, breakfast at Moorhouse is now a shared experience. Residents are supported to prepare their own drinks and meals, fostering independence and reducing weight and hydraon concerns. Addionally, the Lutyens Lounge has been created, inspired by the “Breakfast Club” concept. This new space oers a relaxed environment where residents, with assistance from the Wellbeing Team, can independently make their own drinks and maintain some daily rounes. As we roll out these changes to other homes in the new year, we are excited to announce the development of tailored training. With the experse of Amy, Shaun and our Demena Leads, we will design bespoke “Dining Experience Training” to enhance sta skills and understanding. By ulising “Mealme Passports,” we aim to ensure every resident’s individual needs and preferences are met with the right tools and support. These improvements reect our commitment to providing the highest quality of life for our residents.
