Aer very lengthy negoaons lasng almost 3 years, the Board are delighted to announce the acquision of The Weir Nursing Home in Swainshill near Hereford. A beauful Grade 2 listed Georgian mansion; The Weir is set in 500 acres of parkland on the bank of the River Wye. The building is secured on a 99-year lease from the Naonal Trust. We have planning consent to add an addional 10 en-suite bedrooms ulising the adjoining coach house building, work which we intend to commence at the earliest opportunity.Although the house is not open to the public, the gardens are a popular Naonal Trust aracon. The rst records of The Weir Garden date back to 1673, where Thomas Smyth is recorded to have owned the estate in the ‘Alphabecal Account of the Nobility and Gentry of England’. The Smyth line connued to live here unl 1765 when his daughter, Elizabeth became heir to the estate. Elizabeth married Timothy Markham, who was responsible for the building of impressive mansion that we now occupy. Markham appeared to have drained his funds with the new build, as in 1778 it was sold to William Parry. However, Parry, a Hereford solicitor faced a dilemma; his wife didn’t want to move to Herefordshire as she liked life in the city and to tempt his wife to the countryside, Parry promised to make huge improvements to the mansion and gardens, with advice from the renowned landscape designer, Humphry Repton. These improvements persuaded his wife to move and she stayed unl his death in 1813 when the estate was sold to John Griths, whose family owned it throughout the 19th century. Upon his death the estate passed to his eldest son, John Harward Griths who eventually moved to Staordshire with his wife and rented the estate to the Burney family, who used The Weir as their country retreat away from London. In 1923 the house was sold to Roger Charlton Parr and four years later he bought the rest of the estate making vast improvements to the mansion and grounds with the assistance of his head gardener, William Boulter. The glory days ended abruptly, with Parr’s death in 1958. Upon his death, Parr bequeathed the estate to the Naonal Trust, with one request, to let his dear friend and chaueur Victor Morris, live in the mansion unl his death in 1985. During Parr’s me, there had been six gardeners to maintain the garden. Morris hired only two part-me gardeners, who struggled with the walled garden’s upkeep and the garden suered with neglect over the next 50 years. Following Victor’s death, the mansion was converted into a Nursing Home.It is our plan to connue our acquision acvity during 2025 when we hope to add at least three more care homes to our porolio.BOARDROOMNigel Denny, CEOGary Corell, CFOChae2 | Ashberry News Winter 2025

In this issue, I am delighted to introduce our new Support Chef, Francesco Ceccarelli. Francesco brings a wealth of culinary experse, having served as Head Chef at Engelberg for the past six years. Prior to Ashberry Healthcare’s acquision of Engelberg in April 2024, Francesco was employed by the previous owners, MHA, as their Support Chef. We are excited to have him join our wider support team, where he will play a pivotal role in enhancing the dining experiences across all our homes.Francesco’s focus will be on driving improvements through rened processes, innovave techniques, updated equipment and comprehensive training for our teams. This is just the beginning of an excing journey to elevate the standards of dining for our residents. Look out for regular updates on this transformave work in future newsleers. In addion to Francesco’s appointment, I’d like to share progress on another important iniave—the rollout of our Demena Leads program. In October, we delivered specialised training to our Demena Leads in Hereford in collaboraon with Training2Care. This training equips them to champion a more progressive and person-centred approach to demena care in their homes. By shiing focus away from task-oriented care and fostering a deeper understanding of demena, our leads are commied to creang meaningful, posive changes. Their role includes delivering training, idenfying and addressing opportunies for improvement, always keeping the individual needs of residents at the heart of their work.At Ashberry Healthcare, we believe that understanding demena and all of its forms is essenal to providing exceponal care. I look forward to seeing the impact of this iniave as our Demena Leads connue to implement these changes in our Care Homes.QUALITY & COMPLIANCECLINICAL ADVISORY BOARD (CAB)We had a busy end to the year and nalised some of the projects we had been working on. I am delighted to say that we will be rolling out our “Do Not Disturb” process later this month. The aim of this is to ensure that residents and their family members can have minimal interrupon and noise levels around them at a me when peace and tranquillity are a priority. As a working group we have agreed the mes that this will be used and the team members responsible for implemenng and monitoring the use of it.Further training took place at the end of the year with sta in Wales undertaking the First Aid at Work course, this 3-day course has enabled the parcipang team members to develop their knowledge and skills to support individuals in a variety of rst aid scenarios that may occur both in our sengs and the wider community. In conjuncon with this, I was thrilled to nd out that we will be receiving debrillators in the Welsh homes in the coming days. This is essenal in supporng and potenally saving the lives of individuals who suer a cardiac arrest. As we move into 2025 our focus connues to be on supporng posive change and ensuring that we deliver evidence-based care to our many residents. We connue to reect on situaons as they occur and use them to develop our policies and processes and to learn and grow. I am looking forward to working with the CAB team during 2025 and supporng further changes and developments.Jess BridgewaterCAB Chair,Allt Y Mynydd Home ManagerShaun LockDirector of Careashberry-care-homes.co.uk | 3

4 | Ashberry News Winter 2025Engelberg Care Home recently reached full occupancy, a remarkable achievement that reects the dedicaon, passion, and hard work of our enre team! To celebrate this excing milestone, the home hosted a pizza party as a way to show their appreciaon for everyone involved in making this possible. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together and recognise the collecve eort of our sta, families, and residents who all contribute to creang a warm and welcoming environment at Engelberg.A Clati OF TEAMWORKENHANCING RESIDENT WELLBEINGAs part of my role as Director of Operaons I am always very keen to improve the environment across all Ashberry homes for all our residents. As a team we are always looking for new and innovave ideas that will enhance the wellbeing of residents and give condence to families that their loved ones are being cared for in a manner that they deserve.Obviously, whilst we have an excellent team with excellent ideas here at Ashberry, we also welcome ideas and feedback from other quarters as to what it is that can be improved. We do this by conducng a twice-yearly survey inving residents, families, professionals and sta to let us know not only how well we are doing but also direct us towards areas of improvement. I can tell you that your connual engagement in these surveys is very important to us and greatly appreciated.Part of our drive for environmental improvements is to enhance exisng spaces throughout our homes. By this I mean we are focusing on improving the current facilies to beer suit the needs and comfort of our residents. For example we are reorganising and refurbishing lounges and creang seang arrangements that encourage social interacon; we are reviewing lighng across all our homes that will help enhance independence, support cognive funcon and improve moods and mental health; we are implemenng demena-friendly design principles that includes clear signage, contrasng colour schemes to aid navigaon and minimise visual cluer to create a calming atmosphere. At Meadowview Care Home we are also trialling an air purier system. The expectaon is that this will remove unpleasant odours and have a signicant impact on minimising ill-health by improving air quality throughout the home. Should this trial be successful it will be rolled out to all our other homes. In January we are also rolling out a ‘Talking Books’ iniave. Talking memory books are ideal for reminiscence therapy to aid in memory recall and provide comfort through familiar stories, songs and voices. They can be used to help ease and reassure ‘created behaviours.’ These are just some of the examples of acvies we are undertaking to ensure the wellbeing of our residents through environmental improvements. Here at Ashberry, whilst we pride ourselves in providing an excellent level of personal care, we also believe that providing a safe and pleasurable environment is just as important.Director of OperaonsClaire Fry

At Broomy Hill and Moorhouse, we have been making excing strides to enhance the dining experience for our residents. These improvements aim to create a more comfortable, dignied, and engaging atmosphere, placing residents’ choices and independence at the heart of everything we do.In Hereford, at Broomy Hill Nursing Home, the kitchen team now serves meals directly from the dining room instead of pre-plang, ensuring freshness and enabling greater exibility for residents. We have also eliminated the use of plasc plates and cups, replacing them with proper tableware to elevate the dining experience. Sta have undergone training to foster a warm and welcoming dining environment, creang a more enjoyable mealme atmosphere for residents. During meals, all sta are involved to ensure every resident receives the support they need. Residents’ preferences are now central to our service, giving them the freedom to choose their meals and dining experience. Looking ahead, we plan to further personalise the meal service with the introducon of “Meal Passports,” a tool to document and cater to each resident’s unique preferences.Following in Broomy Hill’s footsteps, Moorhouse Care Home in Surrey has also embraced excing changes to its dining experience. Residents can now select their meals with the help of “show plates” presented by the kitchen team, ensuring they make informed and sasfying choices. To encourage social interacon, breakfast at Moorhouse is now a shared experience. Residents are supported to prepare their own drinks and meals, fostering independence and reducing weight and hydraon concerns. Addionally, the Lutyens Lounge has been created, inspired by the “Breakfast Club” concept. This new space oers a relaxed environment where residents, with assistance from the Wellbeing Team, can independently make their own drinks and maintain some daily rounes. As we roll out these changes to other homes in the new year, we are excited to announce the development of tailored training. With the experse of Amy, Shaun and our Demena Leads, we will design bespoke “Dining Experience Training” to enhance sta skills and understanding. By ulising “Mealme Passports,” we aim to ensure every resident’s individual needs and preferences are met with the right tools and support. These improvements reect our commitment to providing the highest quality of life for our residents. Thank you to all our sta for your ongoing eorts to make mealmes truly special.TRANSFORMING D Epeiece ACROSS OUR HOMESAmy ClayResident Experience Managerashberry-care-homes.co.uk | 5We extend our hearelt thanks to our dedicated sta for their unwavering commitment to providing the best care possible, and to the families and residents who make Ashberry such a special and vibrant place.
