Thank you so much for supporting Re;ACT - The Arts of War!As an independent game designer and publisher, I am completely serious when I say it could not exist without your support.Throughout my journey of creating board games, particularly fan games, I have worked with over 500 different artists across dozens of projects. When I began to create an original cast of characters for my rst publication, the idea of a ghting game with different types of artists just came so naturally. At its core, Re;ACT reects the roots of shonen battle manga, where characters have super powers based on a particular gimmick that is then extrapolated into an entire move set. Many manga use this trope, such as the devil fruit powers of One Piece, the Quirks of My Hero Academia, or the Cursed Techniques of Jujitsu Kaisen.I wanted to create a cast of characters who gained their powers from various mediums of “Art”, each extrapolating powers from that art style in fun and exciting ways. There is a wide range of things that could be considered artistic mediums, so there are so many more character ideas that I’ve yet to explore.I hope that through this artbook, I can bring you further into this world that I’ve created and make you fall in love with it’s colorful cast of characters!- Ming, (Brother Ming Games)FOREWORDi.3

Have you ever felt the spark of creativity drive you to pursue your passion, or perhaps a way to express yourself that you became obsessed with day in and day out? That storm of creativity can come from anything! From writing a fantasy novel to perfecting your loadout in a game, self-expression is a core element of our existence. For some people, a form of self expression can become their entire reason for existing. Something to dedicate their whole lives to rather than simply enjoy it as a hobby. In the world of Re;ACT, a select few of those who have dedicated themselves to their medium of self expression have manifested magical powers beyond human understanding. No one really knows for sure when or how these powers came to be, but rumors of their existence spread so quickly that they entered mainstream media attention immediately. These “Ascended Artists” were all that people could talk about, with each of them manifesting unique magical powers fueled by their individual forms of self expression. The theory that these powers must be blessings from gods that reward those most dedicated to their crafts spread quickly across the world. As the internet buzzed with speculation on how someone became an Ascended Artist, the world entered a frenzy of creativity. A new age of art arrived, carried by a wave of artists letting their passions ow freely in the hopes of manifesting powers of their own.As the world watched these Ascended Artists, each driven to create their very own masterpiece, conict became inevitable. Those using their powers with no regard for the safety of others began to draw criticism, and some even took it upon themselves to rectify the behavior of their Ascended Artist peers.RE;ACTiii.7

Standing proudly in front of her work, she proclaimed “From the heavens to the earth, I shall straighten all who stray into evil!”She stood for a moment in silence, then gave a satised huff as her eyes met her grandfather’s portrait. The Calligrapher walked across the empty room, kneeled before the humble altar, and clapped her hands.“Wish me luck Grandfather, I’m going to need it.”The Calligrapher has dedicated her life to a craft she inherited from her grandfather. Her parents passed away when she was still a baby, and she was raised by her grandfather into her late teens. In the years where she lived on her own, she threw herself into her craft, entering and winning competition after competition in order to honor her mentor and guardian. To her, leaving behind a legacy would mean immortalizing her family, even if she were its last living member. When her powers manifested, she was in shock, but with a lifetime of discipline instilled into her by her grandfather, she quickly gained control over them. With morals instilled in her by her mentor, she used her powers to spread righteousness and correct the misguided. The gorgeous scrolls of calligraphy she created was imbuned with her magic, compelling those who read it to live their best lives. When controversy began spreading of Ascended Artists who used their powers recklessly, the Calligrapher vowed to personally rectify her selsh peers by compelling them to be more mindful of their powers and the consequences of their use.PT 01.IntroductoryStory書道家// the CalligrapherTHECalligrapher01.8

PT 03.Random NotesCalligraphy is an artform with multiple schools of thoughts and many different eras of history. As a master of the craft, the Calligrapher has studied them all and won achievements in nearly all categories. The Calligrapher’s 3 action cards depict the words “Kai Shu”, “Xing Shu“, and “Zhuan Shu”, which translates into Regular, Semi-Cursive, and Seal script. It represents 3 different eras and styles of Chinese calligraphy.Skills3The Calligrapher’s powers allow her to turn her written words into reality. This rst manifested in her turning the ink she drew into a living spirit with the words “live and love”. The words she writes will compell those who read them to obey its commands, but the longer and more complicated the command, the weaker the effect.Power21SwordHaving been raised as a single child by only her grandfather, the Calligrapher grew up to be very tomboyish. She grew a deep fascination with swords, especially katanas, and also loved the showy artistry of Shodo calligraphy. She was inspired to create a custom sheath by attaching a large brush head to its tip as a teenager after attending a live demonstration where a master Calligrapher performed with a giant 4 feet long ink brush.Character splash art書道家// the calligrapher1213

“Annnnnd... Done!” The young boy beamed as he held the miniature Kaiju head above his face. His eyes glinted with excitement as he turned the monster’s head left and right, taking in every detail of the sculpture.A small stumpy and segmented creature crawled up his back and onto his shoulder, holding out a nub towards the boy.“Thanks buddy~” The Sculptor passed the creature his paint brush, and the creature crawled off onto the table with it, placing it into a cup of murky water.“Now then, on to the body, I wonder what I’ll call you once you’re done...”The boy began to shape an arm out of clay, skillfully maneuvering his knife to form dangerous looking claws. As he poured his focus into his work, his smile widened further, and a dangerous gleam entered his eyes. His mind began lling with all of the destruction such a creature could inict. What kind of powers it would have. How many people it would kill. But of course, these are simply the thoughts of a boy with an overly active imagination and an obsession with Kaiju. He knew the difference between real lives and toys, and he would never let loose such a creature in the real world. But a fake world? Populated with humans made of clay and brought to life with his Ascended Artist powers? They’re just his toys after all. Their screams of terror is just a sign of quality production. DevelopmentNotesPT 02.The Sculptor and the Tagger was the second batch of characters we created for Re;ACT. With the Calligrapher as the “Heroine” of the cast, we wanted to introduce a solid “Antagonist” to the cast as well. The idea of a young boy who loved Kaiju with the powers of creating real life Kaiju by sculpting them was heavily inspired by the anime “SSSS.Gridman”, who has an antagonist named Akane Shinjo with a similar concept. SSSS Gridman also happens to be one of my favorite anime of all time, and is something I strongly recommend everyone to watch~Unfortunately, after we eshed out the Sculptor, it just didn’t feel right for him to be the main “Antagonist” of the cast when the Calligrapher is such a strong headed tomboy type. Therefore, we opted to push the Sculptor to be simply one of the more morally dubious characters, and introduce the Fortune Teller as our main antagonist.Gameplay wise, this also meant scaling the Sculptor’s abilities back from creating real life Kaiju to simply large friend shaped giant buddies. This t his personality a lot better and also allowed us to better clean up his gameplay. Originally, he would be able to summon 3 different giant Kaiju, each with different abilities, but 3 different options for large summons was difcult to properly balance, and summons being defeated in a single hit didn’t really let them feel like giant terrible Kaiju. The change from 3 large unique kaiju to 3 simple giant buddies, inspired by the Fat Chocobo of Final Fantasy, made a lot more sense for how summons behaved in Re;ACT, and allowed his gameplay kit to revolve more around his claybud tokens.Character splash art22 23彫刻家// the sculptor

321Uniform Power SkillsThe art of sculpting is a detail oriented and painstaking art. It requires a precise and steady hand and an attention to detail in a 3d space. With an incredibly vivid imagination and an obsession with every nook and cranny of Kaiju design, the Sculptor could work his clay into a lifelike gure in just a few hours.Outside of sculpting however, his greatest skill is how many friends he’s managed to make in his army of buddies. When the Sculptor declared he would no longer be attending school, his orphanage was incredulous. But when those strange creatures he had been making actually came to life, the orphanage was astonished. At rst, they were incredibly proud to have raised an “Ascended Artist” in their home, but it didn’t take long for them to grow worried with his rather deranged behavior. He moved out of the orphanage only 3 weeks after his powers awakened. The Sculptor’s outt is a heavily modied version of his middle school uniform. Having grown up an orphan, the Sculptor always wore hand-me-downs, and his orphanage helped every child customize their clothes to repair them from child to child and allow their children more self expression. When it came to the Sculptor, he added a large front pocket to hold all his tools, inspired by his favorite cartoon mascot Doraemon.PT 03.Random NotesCharacter splash art25彫刻家// the sculptor24

There is already the basis of a lush landscape painting on it, but her strokes quickly and effortlessly add in detailed scenery. She dabs her brush into a cup of murky water, dries it, then gingerly mixes her acrylic paints together to form several shades of emerald green. Without letting anyone know, she glances quickly at the view count of her stream. It’s increasing! I must look extra adorable today~The Painter hums to herself as she basks in the attention. PT 02.DevelopmentNotesThe Painter is a character that went through a TON of changes during her development. Originally, all Re;ACT characters would have a deck of 30 cards and the Painter and Animator were no exception. However, after Gen Con of 2022, we realized that it would be best to provide some variety to how the characters play by making the asymmetry even more asymmetrical. The Painter, prior to this change, had a deck of 30 cards that was actually composed of 21 “paint” cards that we called inspiration. These cards effectively fueled her various actions and the different armament summons you could create. After detaching ourselves with the need for each character to have a deck of cards, we decided to simply replace this resource with dice instead. At rst, she actually had both dice and a token resource called inspiration, but after some more testing, we landed on a more simplied version where everything was simply fueled by these dice. This resulted in a character that felt more like a traditional board game character where you rolled dice and allocated these dice for various actions. In the end, the Painter’s development has opened the door for us to bring in more “board game” like characters that will be more fun for gamers less accustomed to TCGs who are coming to Re;ACT.Character splash art34 35画家// the painter

But since we wanted to tie her tattoos to her bunnies, it meant that the longer the game went on, the weaker she would get.Eventually, we changed it so that her ascension would simply bring back her bunnies, replenishing her action economy, but have her actual life be hit every time any bunny was defeated. We also wanted her bunnies to be tied to her various tattoo abilities. At rst, this took the form of each bunny having their own “exhaust me” ability that would try and resolve one of her action cards that had been placed under that bunny as a tattoo. Unfortunately this resulted in her being insanely hard to mentally digest and resulted in her being very complicated to play.In the end, we came up with the solution of having the tattoos be tokens instead, and simply giving her 1 reference card for each of the possible tattoos. She still remains one of the hardest characters to learn and play, but her unique mechanics makes her very rewarding to master. The Tattooist is a character that is heavily inspired by gothic lolita crossed with Alice in Wonderland. We knew we wanted a Tattooist character that used blood as ink, and her theme just came super naturally from there. She is sadistic but she is also adorable, so we had to make her gameplay equally cute and painful. We knew her theme of using blood as a resource should be reected in giving her a different “health bar” mechanic. This resulted in having her use 3 bunny summons as her real “life” instead pretty quickly.DevelopmentNotesPT 02.58 59彫り師// the tattooist

If you wanna grow tall, stop being so picky with your food!”With practiced condence, he resumed putting down lines of paint, shaping out letters with exaggerated contours.“But they’re magic right? All of your pieces have magic, so there’s gotta be one you can make that’ll turn me tall right?”“Maybe, but who said I’d make it for you?”The crowd of the kids burst into laughter, but the Tagger just kept on laying down paint. This might not make them grow taller, but it’ll denitely keep them motivated to keep on learning.タガー// the taggerTHETAGGER07.81

The grafti Tagger was a character I personally wanted to create very early on in the process of creating the cast of Re;ACT. I love seeing amazing grafti art and the idea of them holding magic was a no brainer. To be entirely honest, I wasn’t sure if it would come off as too stereotypical to have the one black character in a cast of 8 be a grafti artist, but after discussing it with some friends, it felt like it would be even weirder to make the grafti artist another race.I will admit that we ended up picking a rather overused hair style in the anime and video game space for black characters, but back at the time in 2020, it wasn’t nearly as overused as we thought it would be today. His gameplay actually clicked together pretty easily. We knew we wanted a fast paced character who would put down card after card, and we knew we wanted a character that specically only dealt damage by using his murals. With that in mind, it only took a few iterations of card effects before we arrived at a version of the Tagger that is very similar to his nal form. The main concern we had with Tagger’s kit was the introduction of Zone Tiles. We knew his murals would take up the entire zone, but we also didn’t want the zone tiles of a future character to share spaces with these murals. 3 zone tiles quickly revealed itself as the maximum any 1 character can really have and still allow other characters to have their own zone tiles. We denetly want to introduce more characters that use zone times, so hopefully his design will not limit our design space too badly!DevelopmentNotesPT 02.Character splash art82 83タガー// the tagger

It had a dark red door, and all of it’s windows were heavily tinted yet somehow still letting through a soft glow from the inside. With a single blink, he had opened the door and stepped inside, greeted by two faintly glowing eyes that compelled him to step forward.“Good evening young man. Please, lend me your hand.”This mysterious woman is the Fortune Teller. She runs a mystical shop that exists beyond the physical realm. She can appear anywhere and to anyone she wishes, but her criteria for who and where she appears is known only to her.Her motivations are entirely unknown. Character splash artThe Fortune Teller was the last character we designed for the core cast of 8 characters. Originally, our main “villain” of the game was going to be the Sculptor, but we thought that having a child be the main antagonist in the cast wouldn’t feel very balanced visually against the Calligrapher. There was another character, the Yūrei-zu maker, who was supposed to be our 8th character, but we ended up cutting him to make room for the Fortune Teller to act as the main villain instead. The Fortune Teller’s original concept started off as a character that had 2 sets of masterpiece cards. 2 variations for each of their 3 masterpiece cards. Each card had a Positive and Negative version, and 3 of her action cards would each have different effects depending on which version of each masterpiece card was in the masterpiece zone. This ended up being way too confusing visually and very hard to keep track of, so we took the idea of tarot cards and gave her a simple 4 suit tarot resource instead. After several reworks, we put her into open beta with our community and allowed her to be played in our rst tournament. Because she was the most complicated character and had an insanely high skill ceiling, we compensated by giving her much more offensive powers. We thought that since she was so difcult to play correctly, it wouldn’t be an issue. We were very wrong. She ended up dominating the rst tournament with a 74% win rate. She was nerfed immediately afterwards.PT 02.DevelopmentNotes94 95占い師// the fortune teller

The DJ is our 9th character and was only introduced as a kickstarter stretch goal. Once it became likely that we would reach the funding required to include a free 9th character in all deluxe and collector’s editions of the game, we began to quickly work out her kit.Her design is actually a redesign of a very old OC of mine. As someone who absolutely sucks at giving characters names, all of my OCs have always been simply called “The XYZ”. And The DJ is no exception. However unlike all of my other OCs, the DJ is the ONLY character to actually have an alias, aka, DJ “King”, as I always imagined her to be an androgynous and more gender uid character. As for her gameplay kit, I knew it would revolve around dropping and killing beats, triggering different effects based on those, kind of like a bard character in RPGs.On top of dropping beats for various effects, the idea of constructive interference emerged very early on as her means for doing damage. At rst though, we considered having these speakers actually live outside the board, moving up and down the sides of the game board to shoot their sound waves down a particular column or row. After some testing though, we realized it was no fun to have her speakers be indestructible.
