Maitreya Dunham PhD Professor Genome Sciences University of Washington The UW s Genome Sciences department new to ARCS this year strives to address leading edge questions in biology and medicine by developing and applying new genetic genomic proteomic and computational approaches These scientists are taking advantage of the vast genomic information now available for humans model organisms and a host of other species Recruiting top scholars is key to this work We try to assemble an incoming class that can succeed in the program with opportunities to do research that will further their careers and our department goals at the same time says Professor Maitreya Dunham PhD It s important to bring in a vibrant group of students and support them in their thesis work she adds And what ARCS does best is emphasize the same things that we really care about They re also aligned with our values in wanting to attract a diverse group of students We really appreciate that aspect of their mission We want to help students make the best possible choice and these are students with many options Dr Dunham continues Our program is very competitive with an acceptance rate of less than 10 but there are many competitive programs Anything we can bring in is helpful anything that demonstrates commitment gives students resources offers community those are values that we want to communicate to recruits ARCS provides all of these things and more UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Cera Hassinan UW Scholar 2019 2022 Molecular and Cellular Biology I study rhythmic behaviors like walking biking and swimming things people do every day and may take for granted says third year ARCS scholar Cera Hassinan who is pursuing her PhD in the Molecular and Cellular Biology program at the UW Such behaviors created by neurons talking to one another evolve and change throughout the course of a lifetime Cera cites the way a toddler walks versus an adult as an example of this The brain of a toddler is different from that of an adult over time neurons refine the way they communicate she explains I want to understand how that communication changes over time Cera s work could also help create a basic understanding of how communication between neurons get disrupted providing valuable clinical insights about neurological disorders like Parkinson s disease that disrupt movement A member of the Crow Creek Sioux tribe with her maternal family originating in South Dakota and her paternal family based in Cairo Egypt Cera says the ARCS fellowship was a major factor in her decision to do her research at UW Being in community with my family is tremendously important to me and ARCS helps me have access to them she shares adding A lot of grad students of color and specifically Natives have a hard time seeing their families ARCS allows me to go home UW Departments ARCS Seattle Chapter supports the UW students College of Arts Sciences Applied Mathematics Astronomy Biology Chemistry Mathematics Physics Speech Hearing Sciences Statistics College of Engineering Aeronautics Astronautics Bioengineering Jointly with School of Medicine 4 Chemical Engineering Civil Environmental Engineering Computer Science Engineering Electrical Computer Engineering Industrial Engineering Materials Science Engineering Mechanical Engineering College of the Environment Aquatic Fishery Sciences Atmospheric Sciences Earth Space Sciences Environmental Forest Sciences Oceanography Quantitative Ecology Resource Management QERM Graduate School Interdisciplinary School of Nursing Molecular Cellular Biology Neuroscience School of Dentistry Health Economics and Outcomes Research Medicinal Chemistry Pharmaceutics Department of Oral Health Sciences includes DDS PhD and PhD degree programs School of Medicine Bioengineering Jointly with School of Medicine Genome Sciences Medical Scientist Training Program MD PhD Microbiology Nursing Sciences School of Pharmacy School of Public Health Biostatistics Environmental Occupational Health Sciences Epidemiology Institute for Public Health Genetics Pathobiology My ARCS fellowship was invaluable in providing support during my academic training I was able to afford the cost of relocating as well as other unexpected expenses I loved my time as an ARCS Fellow and appreciated the friendliness and generosity of donors Now I have the opportunity to work with incoming ARCS scholars and serve as a mentor on their scientific journey Atom Lesiak Ph D Director of Education Outreach Genome Sciences 5

Michael Neff PhD Director of Graduate Program in Molecular Plant Sciences Washington State University We re easily among the top 10 if not the top five plant PhD programs in the country asserts Michael Neff PhD Director of WSU s graduate program in molecular plant sciences In fact a recent ranking published by the National Research Council placed the program in the top five in the U S This unique program brings together faculty and PhD students from eight departments across four colleges in an interdisciplinary environment that provides students with great flexibility and growth opportunities Students and faculty work in tandem to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of plants and use that knowledge to develop new medicines safe and abundant food and innovative agricultural systems to feed our global population Not surprisingly WSU s program is highly competitive But that competition goes both ways And ARCS has made a difference for top scholars who are deciding among the country s top programs It s a dance comments Dr Neff Fit is very important and ARCS has been absolutely critical in attracting world class scholars from across the United States Dr Neff believes strongly that what attracts those scholars is far more than the financial reward offered by an ARCS Fellowship It s the prestige of the fellowship having it on your CV and the connections available through ARCS That s the real value WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY Andrew Herr WSU Scholar 2019 2022 Molecular Plant Sciences From start to finish it takes seven to eight years to develop a new variety of wheat It s the same to improve an existing variety says third year ARCS Fellow Andrew Herr who is earning his PhD in molecular plant science at WSU s winter wheat breeding research program The more we can shorten that window the better he continues We want to improve yield disease resistance and flour quality as fast as possible providing farmers with the best product With wheat prices skyrocketing right now we need to act quickly to aid in global food stability and availability Andrew is using drone imaging and remote sensing in his pursuit to help develop the next best variety of wheat for farmers to grow in their fields Using a multispectral camera which sees infrared and near infrared we can identify the health metrics of the plant he says ARCS was says Andrew the cake topper in my decision to move to Washington The excellent WSU faculty the opportunity to work with my advisor plus ARCS it was a no brainer Andrew and his wife just might stay We like the area and when I m out driving I can see my research all around me WSU Departments Washington State University Fellowship Support Areas The Seattle Chapter supports WSU students in these departments and schools College of Agriculture Human Natural R esources Science Animal Sciences Crop and Soil Sciences Entomology Molecular Plant Sciences Plant Pathology College of Arts Sciences Chemistry 6 Voiland College of Engineering Architecture Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering College of Veterinary Medicine Global Health Molecular Biosciences Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience Veterinary Clinical Sciences Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology Doctoral students are at the core of every great research university We are grateful for the support of ARCS Foundation which helps us recruit outstanding students and enriches their experience The research and innovation of WSU s doctoral students inspires the community and contributes to our land grant mission Elizabeth Chilton Washington State University Provost and Executive Vice President Chancellor WSU Pullman Professor Department of Anthropology 7
