“People should look upon us as servants ofChrist and stewards of the mysteries of God.”1Cor. 4:1As we relive the passion of Christ during theLenten season, may we remember the gift ofJesus Christ, our savior, and try to remain inHis grace forever. Our Lenten sacrifices shouldbe true offerings to the Lord, and when weexperience this hurt or pain, we can truly relivethe Passion of Christ. I pray that our sacrifices of self be acommitment to become closer to the Lord andnot just a change during these forty days. Inorder for sacrifices to be real, we must emptyourselves of selfishness and at times, sacrificemay hurt. This pain is what truly allows us tolive the Passion of Christ. Remember ourpastors, school staff members, and students inyour prayers and sacrifices during this LentenSeason. We hope you are enjoying our electroniceditions of the Aquila and remember to sendus news and updates so we can keepconnected with all of our alumni, family, andfriends of Bishop Carroll Catholic High School!Prayers for a rejuvenated Lenten Season andHoly Easter!!!PresidentHappy Spring BC Family,In Christ,3

We have receivedfeedback from students and staff about somenecessary changes to the new calendar. We will sharethese updates with our families as soon as they arefinalized. As I wrap up my first year here at Bishop Carroll, Iwould like to thank the people who have helped melearn the ropes this year. President Tish Nielsen hasmade herself available at all times to help me thinkthrough situations and brings a wealth of history andexperience to the table. Mr. Slade Lamunyon and Mr.Keaton McCracken have proven to be a great team ofadministrators here at Bishop Carroll. All three of ushave worked well together and are excited about thefuture. The department chairs meet with us monthlyand provide expertise on the best options for ourschool, both now and in the future. The CommunityDeans and CLT leadership always remind us that wemust build strong relationships with our students ifwe want to have a thriving Catholic community at ourschool. Our faculty and staff meet weekly to ensurewe are doing our best to meet our students' needs forformation and education. And finally, our students—we have the greatest student body, and they havedone so much to encourage our staff and make us allfeel welcome. This year isn't over yet, and I lookforward to enjoying every day we have left in the2024/2025 school year.PrincipalHello BC Family,In Christ,12
13Back in the Eagles NestBack in the Eagles NestTaylor Dugan, a BC graduate in the class of 2004, is the headcoach for girls' basketball. She has led the team to many greatvictories in recent years, including league championships in2021, 2022, and 2023.During her time at Bishop Carroll, she also played basketball. One of her fondest memories is from her senior year when theteam won the state championship in 2004. She won thatchampionship with her best friends—her teammates.Dugan aspires to keep alive the traditions and values shelearned while she was in high school. She always makes sure toteach the principles of Bishop Carroll by demonstrating themherself.“I strive to lead by example, showing the girls what it means tolive with integrity, kindness, and respect,” said Dugan. “Iencourage them to support each other on and off the court.”Dale Faber, has recently taken up the role of head basketballcoach once again at Bishop Carroll. Faber is a BC grad fromthe class of 1976 who coached here from 1987 to 1999. Faber played basketball and baseball during his high schoolyears. In 1975 his basketball team was the first basketballteam to qualify for the state tournament that year. Althoughthey were ranked in the lowest seed, they won their firstgame against number one seed Topeka Highland Park, knocking them out of the running. Since returning to Bishop Carroll, he has been able to pass onthe wisdom he learned during his time at school. He alsoincorporates Christ's teaching in his coaching. His focus is tomake sure players feel cared for and seen, both on and offthe court. “We really want to embrace the fact that it is important andneeded that we "express our gratitude" to those who enableus to be a BC student and a BC athlete,” said Faber. Bishop Carroll has always been known for its strong community. This aspect of our culture attractsmany former student-athletes to return to BC as coaches. These five people have had great successas athletes and are continuing this success as coaches. Not featured: Alumni Ron Horsch ‘80,Spencer Shellhammer ‘10, and Mara McElgunn ‘18 have also put in many dedicated hours coachingat Bishop Carroll.
Chris Jaax graduated from Bishop Carroll in 2001. Sincereturning to Carroll, he has been a coach of both the trackand football teams. Jaax was recently promoted to headcoach of the football team and took up the position for thenext coming season. Jaax has many fond memories of playing football during hishigh school years. His senior year was when the twenty-two-year winning streak against Kapaun was started. Healso vividly remembers beating Liberal in an exciting game. “Liberal was the dominant team in 5A and had deniedBishop Carroll football the opportunity to play in the stateplayoffs for years,” said Jaax. Some important teachings Jaax learned during his timeplaying track and football at BC was the value of hard workand dedication. These lessons have created a firmfoundation for Jaax in his life after high school. He alwaysmakes time for Christ’s teaching in his coaching as well. “Football forms young men in fantastic ways,” said Jaax, “Itteaches them virtue and gives them confidence andstrength. This makes it a great avenue for them toencounter Jesus Christ as they learn who they are and werecreated to be.” 14Josh Mans graduated from Bishop Carroll in 2007. He nowworks at Carroll in the counseling office and coaches for thefootball and track teams. He found his year at BC very formativeand loves coming back here to give back to the school thathelped him during those years. His favorite memories are the relationships and the people thatsports brought him. Mans has focused on many importantvirtues while coaching at Carroll, his favorite being thateveryone has value no matter what. “It's important to remember that athletics gives us anopportunity to use the gifts God has given to us for his glory, but at the same time, my value is not directly tied to myperformance,” said Mans, “I have dignity and worth because Iwas created in God's image and likeness. I want all of ourathletes to know this!” In addition to telling his players they are valued, Mans alsoshows his players with his actions. “We pray together, try to witness the beauty of the sport in allthat we do, and talk openly about our faith. I believe that sportsare a way that we can be formed as better disciples and I try notto lose sight of that in our message to the athletes.” Page by Flyer Staff Writer, Rica Bluml
Teri Larson, a graduate from the class of 1981, returnedto Bishop Carroll after retiring from the Maize schooldistrict in 2023. Larson played volleyball during her time atCarroll and is very excited to be coaching here. “My last two years of coaching at BCCHS have beenwonderful. The girls have worked so hard and are a joy tobe around,” said Larson. “Coming back to Carroll hasbeen an extraordinary experience.” During her own high school experience, Larson playedvolleyball along with softball. She recalls one of herfavorite memories from playing sports at Carroll waswhen her team won the state championship in softball in1980. “Several of my good friends were on BOTH teams. Webeat Newton in the finals and my summer traveling teamwas from Newton so I knew everyone on their high schoolteam too. It was a great game!!” said Larson. An important lesson she learned in high school was thevalues of sportsmanship and putting God before anythingelse, something that she continues to live by today. Sheloves when opponents compliment Carroll players’ senseof integrity. Whether it’s at practice, a team dinner or afilm session, Larson makes it her priority to start with ateam prayer. “Putting God first puts everything else in perspective,” saidLarson. 15Page by Flyer Staff Writer, Rica BlumlDo you have a greatidea for an article youwould like to seefeatured in a futureedition of The Aquila?Be sure to let us know!Email Jackie Foltz at FoltzJackie@bcchs.org

Next year at Bishop Carroll, every single juniorstudent will attend a Kairos retreat, a three-day,two-night experience that allows students to getaway from the busyness, pressures, anddistractions of day-to-day life in order to make timeand space to encounter God. Leading these retreatswill be a group of seniors, who we are in theprocess of selecting. Part of this process involvesinterviewing students who have applied and askingthem why they want to be part of this team. This process, while time-consuming, has been veryeye-opening for me and, I think, for other facultyand administrators who are involved. I amconsistently amazed by the response of manystudents, some of whom I barely know, who speakabout their lives of prayer at a very mature, profound level. We have students who truly knowGod.I am consistently amazed, too, by the desire of ourstudents to help their classmates and friendsencounter and experience His love, which changesour lives. We have students who want to make Godknown. This is, for me, what makes Bishop Carroll such awonderful place to work. I often catch myselfthinking, and expressing to colleagues, how fun thisjob is. It is a joy to know all the students and to seethe good work God is beginning in their lives.Thank you, first, to the parents of our students, wholay the foundation that we have the privilege ofbuilding upon. And thank you for your support, which makes this incredible work possible for meand for all our faculty and staff. Please continue topray for us, that God will continue to make Himselfknown to our students and fill our hearts with Hispeace that surpasses all understanding.Fr.
