April 28, 2023ג״פשת רייא ’ז םישודק-תומ ירחא תשרפ SIMCHA IS A PRECONDITION 7:22 PMDear Parents,This week’s Parsha begins: ותמיו ׳ה ינפל םתברקב ןרהא ינב ינש תומ ירחא. Following the deaths of the two sons of Aharon after they brought an unauthorized korban before Hashem, and they died.Chazal relate that Nadav and Avihu deserved death after Matan Torah when they gazed at Hashem and ate and drank ותשיו ולכאיו םיקולא תא וזחיו. However, Hashem didn’t want to mar the joyous day, so He waited until ןכשמה תכונח to punish them. This implies that the Mishkan’s inauguration was less joyous than Matan Torah.Yet, we know that Chazal say that the day of the Mishkan’s dedication was as great as the day which Hashem created heaven and earth. Why then, was this day preferable for punishment?Rav Schwab ztz”l explains that the החמש of Matan Torah was a precondition for receiving the Torah. Torah can only be internalized when a person is in a state of joy and happiness. A mourner is therefore prohibited from learning Torah. Similarly, we are not allowed to learn Torah on Tisha B’av – בל יחמשמ םירשי ׳ה ידוקפ.Since happiness is a prerequisite for Matan Torah, meting out punishment would have disqualified the day for Matan Torah. Therefore, Hashem refrained from punishing Nadav and Avihu on that date.In contrast, the Mishkan’s primary purpose was to cultivate Yiras Shamayim – fear of Heaven. Thus, the possuk adjures: וארית ישדקמו, and we daven ךיתאריב ךישדק לכיה לא הוחתשא. Thus, although the dedication of the Mishkan was a day of joy since Hashem’s shechina was residing among us, an event like the death of Nadav and Avihu, though it would diminish the joy, would not contradict the essence and purpose of the Mishkan. If anything, the death of Nadav and Avihu contributed towards defining the essence of the Mishkan and engendering Yiras Shamayim. As we prepare for Kabolas HaTorah, in the days leading towards the Yomtov of Shavuos, it behooves us to reflect and develop our Simchas HaTorah which is a precondition to receiving it.תבש טוג!Rabbi Ochs●● Fri, May 12 - Grandparents’ Day (schedule in the bulletin!)● Sun, May 14 - Hakhel
