The month of February and March have had many rhythms and blessings through our worship, the sharing of community, pastoral care, fun, the begin-ning of Lent and being a disciple of Jesus. I want to thank our curate Gareth for leading the parish and shaping worship on the four Sundays in February when I was on a sabbatical for 3 weeks in South Carolina. Gareth spoke on the Apostles’ Creed dur-ing that month of February. I wonder what spoke to you from this series! An important day was Ash Wednesday when we set it aside for a day of prayer in the church and with a service online. Gareth prepared some materials in the church which allowed us to focus in prayer with people encouraged to fast as well. This discipline allows us to prioritise time with the Lord and seek what he is saying to us as God’s people today. Life continued when I was away and I thank the Lord for the community of faith that shapes its witness and worship on Sunday and during the week. We had the Rev Peter Jones back with us on Sunday 9th March for a Praise Service as we continue to think about our vision and mission and he contin-ues to stretch us as to what we value in terms of our faith and desire to share Christ with others. It was a blessing to have Richard McCrossan lead the worship with members of our praise group as well. We have been studying Revelation chapter 2-3 on a Thursday morning and these are 7 letters from Jesus to 7 churches. He says, ‘I know…’ and ‘They who have ears, let them hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches…’. I wonder if you were to write a letter to Christ Church Lisburn, starting, ‘I know’ what would you write about the church and its worship and life? We may explore giving peo-ple a template to write this letter before Easter and listen to what is being said as a prompt from the Holy Spirit. SABBATICAL Words fail to describe the 3 weeks in South Carolina on the Isle of Palms with 11 other Christian Anglican leaders and an amazing team that shaped the programme and cared for us. It was a deeply formational time as I had celebrated 20 years in Christ Church and the space to be fed and nurtured spiritually was so valuable. I attended the 12th Anglican Leadership Institute having been asked by Bishop Ken Clarke. Bishop Mark Lawrence led the 3 weeks through teaching from 2nd Timothy and facilitating other teaching ses-sions, worship and trips to see local churches and the locality. Bishop Ken Clarke and Archbishop Ben Kwashi also led sessions during the week they were there. There was the support team to provide food, transport and fun Rector’s Corner

with local church leaders and parishioners speaking or helping practically as well. I valued the opportunity to worship in three different churches in Charleston and speak at the Bible Study in Old St Andrew’s on the day I travelled home. It was the time with Martin, Leo, Raphael, Justice, Hernan, Italo, Jon, Rodri-go, Cris, Fred, and Nelson that impacted me deeply in hearing their stories of faith in Jesus Christ and where they ministered across the global church. I will share some aspects of this special time at the Acorn Club on Thursday 3rd April at 2.30 pm. You will see where I stayed!!! GRIEF COURSE The gift of funding by Mind Matters to allow us to partner with Links Coun-selling for this 6 week course has impacted a number of our people who have experienced grief. We were blessed with Laura and Susan who facilitated the sessions but value above all the people who came to such a group. I trust they found a place to be listened to, to feel supported and loved in the midst of great loss and pain. We do finish on the 7th April but are trusting the Lord for his guiding hand for the shaping of pastoral care in the life of those who grieve. MISSION PARTNER We welcome Melissa Newell to our 11.30 am service on Sunday 6th April as she shares about her work in Equador with SAMS. Melissa is my niece and is a Methodist but was taken on by SAMS last year after being in Equador for a couple of years with the Methodist Church. She will share about her call and work in and with the local church near the Amazon rainforest. The parish are supporting her in 2025 through the smartie tubes, jam jars and the bauble scheme as well as PRAYER. The Prayer Fellowship are taking a longer view with supporting Melissa for the coming years as well. EASTER GENERAL VESTRY This will be on Tuesday 29th April at 7.30 pm in the main hall and will repre-sent an opportunity to take stock of where we are as a parish. We will have a report on our finances for 2024 and I will share some reflections on our mis-sion and vision. We will also elect the Select Vestry which comprises 2 church wardens and 12 vestry members. All parishioners can attend but when we get to elections, only those names on the ‘register of Vestrypersons’ can be proposed or vote. Please do pray about this evening and prioritise being present. Pray about whether you would want to be a member of the vestry

Page 5

and what gifts you would bring to being a vestry member and trustee for the parish in its mission and ministry. GIFTS IN MEMORY OF A LOVED ONE The Select vestry at their meeting in March had a discussion of gifts in memory of a loved one after some parishioners had spoken to the rector. As a Vestry we are informing parishioners that if they would like to give a gift, they should speak to Paul in the coming weeks. HOLY COMMUNION AT EASTER AT HOME If you are unable to get to church in recent times and would like Holy Com-munion at home, please contact one of the clergy team in the nest week or so. HOLY WEEK & EASTER - ‘WOVEN’ We are delighted that Mark Wells who works for the Bible Society NI as their Community Partnership Manager will be our speaker in Holy Week. He will be with us on Palm Sunday through to Easter Sunday and I would draw your attention to the various services and events during the week which will allow us to draw close to the CROSS and RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ. Please do support these services and invite family and friends to this special time to renew our faith and shape our mission. The only day when there will be no services or events is Wednesday but there will be a reflection made available for that day. Mark will be using the WOVEN resource produced by the Bible Society. Mark writes: ‘Woven is God’s story and our story. God’s story is one beautiful tapestry. It is woven together in love to show how he would do anything for us his peo-ple. This story comes together to show us the person of Jesus who is our King, our high priest, our friend and our redeemer. Don't let this greatest of all weeks pass you by. Join with us in this journey from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Over these next eight days, slow down. Get away from distractions. Quiet your soul and wait patiently upon the Lord. Pray as you hear and read his Word and meditate on these truths, that our God would come and meet with you right where you are at.’ As we see signs of spring all around us in sunny dry weather, the daffodils blooming and longer daylight in the evenings, we give thanks for the greatest sign of love, the Cross of Jesus Christ for our salvation. May we find time to

gather for worship and ponder the message of the cross and resurrection. An invitation is given to ‘come and meet with Jesus’. Blessings in the name of the One who gave his life and rose again. The Emergence Of Spring As winter fades and the first signs of spring begin to appear, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness and the renewal He brings into our lives. The cold, barren landscape gives way to warmth, new growth, and the blossoming of life. Just as the seasons change, so does God’s work in our hearts. Spring is a time of transformation, both in nature and in our spiritual walk. It teaches us about renewal, hope, and God’s promises. Today, let us reflect on how the emergence of spring mirrors our spiritual journey. 2 Corinthians 5 v 17. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come; the old has gone, the new is here.” Spring reminds us that God is always at work, bringing new beginnings. Just as trees bud and flowers bloom after a season of dormancy, we, too, can experience fresh starts in our lives. As the snow melts and the earth awakens, it teaches us to let go of the past and embrace the future. The dead leaves of yesterday must fall so that new life may emerge. Just as Jesus forgives and restores, spring reminds us that we, too, can move forward with renewed purpose and hope. So, as we step into spring, let us embrace New Beginnings in Christ. We must stay rooted in Jesus to grow and bear fruit, and we must celebrate the power of The Resurrection and Renewal. Our Amazing God is doing a New Thing in each of us, so let us walk into this new season with hearts full of Faith, ready for all that God has in store. Solomons Song Chapter 2: 10 - 13. “My beloved spoke, and said to me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; the fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.” Wesley Dickinson Prayer Fellowship

Treasurers’ Matters Beating the Taxman (lawfully): The Benefits of the Gift Aid Scheme Parishioners will have heard much over the last few years about the onerous obligations which the new Charities legislation has imposed upon churches, particularly smaller parishes and congregations. For example, here at Christ Church (‘the Parish’) we now have to prepare more complex accruals accounts as our income (ordinarily) exceeds £250,000. While full accountability of finances is a Biblical principle (see, 2 Corinthians, 8: 16-24), and the Church of Ireland has always required a Select Vestry to produce accurate, transparent accounts, it is undisputedly the case that the increased regulation required by the Charity Commission has resulted in much more work (and expense) for the Parish. However, charitable status also confers a number of fiscal advantages. One such benefit is the Gift Aid Scheme. This is a fantastic scheme that allows you to make your donation worth 25 per cent more, at no extra cost to you! It is not lawful to opt-out of the onerous accounting and reporting responsibilities of being a charity. It therefore makes no sense whatsoever not to take full advantage of the fiscal benefits that flow from charitable status. Yet, across the UK, charities consistently fail to maximise the Gift Aid Scheme. Currently fewer than 50 per cent of regular contributors to Parish funds have signed a Gift Aid Declaration. The Select Vestry and the Treasurership Team are therefore inviting all parishioners to assess whether they are eligible to gift aid their financial contributions and, if so, to complete a simple Declaration which means that the Parish will receive an additional 25 pence from the Government for every pound donated. Making a Gift Aid £600 million per year - the estimate of what UK charities lose every year by not gift aiding £7,500 per year - a (conservative) estimate of the additional revenue from which the Parish could benefit if it were to maximise the Gift Aid Scheme

Page 15

Declaration doesn’t cost you a penny: so long as you are eligible to gift aid your contributions (on which see more below), it really is as easy as signing a form. #SIGN THE FORM The Gift Aid Scheme – Some FAQs How much do I have to earn in order to make use of the Gift Aid Scheme? There is no ‘threshold’ as such. To qualify for Gift Aid, you must pay an amount in UK tax (income tax and/or capital gains tax) which is equal to, or more than, the amount that the Parish will reclaim in the tax year. Other taxes, such as VAT and rates, do not qualify. For example, say a parishioner gives £350.00 to the FWO fund. If this were Gift Aided, the Parish would receive an additional £87.50. The parishioner would have to pay tax (income or capital gains) of £87.50 in the tax year in question. If you pay less tax than that claimed back by the charities that you support, you will be liable to make up the shortfall to HMRC. Most people have a relatively consistent income stream. However, if your income fluctuates year-on-year (this is more likely if you are self-employed or you may be taking a career-break), it is very important that you check that you have paid sufficient tax each year. I am a pensioner. Does this mean that I cannot gift aid? Not necessarily. You may still be paying income tax on a private or occupational pension or on interest from savings accounts. Or you may have paid capital gains tax on the disposal of a property or shares. You are still

Page 16

eligible if you have paid enough tax during the year to cover the amount the Parish will be reclaiming on your donations. With the so-called ‘fiscal drag’ of recent years, more pensioners than ever are paying income tax. I am a higher-rate tax payer. How will gift aid work for me? Can the Parish claim even more back? If you are a higher rate taxpayer, Gift Aid provides an even more substantial benefit. The Parish can only claim back tax at the basic rate. However, you can claim the difference between the top-rate of tax you pay and the basic rate on the total value of your donation. All you have to do is to remember to include details of your charitable gifts on your self-assessment tax form to reclaim your additional personal tax relief. What types of donations qualify for gift aid? This article is about direct giving to the various Parish funds - FWO, whether by way of envelope or standing order, the Harvest appeal and other special collections. All of these qualify for Gift Aid (so long as sufficient tax has been paid). The basic principle is that donations made in return for something (e.g. tickets for a fundraising concert) are not eligible for the Gift Aid Scheme. There are special rules that apply to sponsorship, which do not concern us at present. Do I have to make a Declaration for every gift/every year? No. You only ever need to complete one Declaration – all of your donations will be covered under this. Going forward, it is good practice to ‘refresh’ Declarations periodically (more on this below). I am already supporting other charities via the Gift Aid scheme You can support as many UK charities as you like – so long as you are paying enough tax during the year to cover your total annual donations to all of the charities.

Page 17

Can I stop giving? Completing a Gift Aid Declaration does not put you under any obligation to give again – you can stop giving at any time. Similarly, you can withdraw your Declaration at any time. Do I need to advise the Parish of any change of circumstances? As noted already, if your financial circumstances change so that you are no longer eligible for the Gift Aid Scheme it is imperative that you advise us immediately. In addition, please remember to let us know if you have moved house so we can change your address (Gift Aid claims require the taxpayer’s full address to be submitted to HMRC). Further information on the Gift Aid Scheme can be found at https://www.gov.uk/donating-to-charity/gift-aid #Sign the Form We all benefited from a very thought-provoking series of sermons on Stewardship from our Curate, Gareth, last autumn. Individually and collectively, we are called to maximise what we have been given in God’s service. Ensuring that all eligible donations to the Parish are increased by 25 per cent at the Government’s expense is surely a ‘no-brainer’ - #Sign the Form. If you do wish to Gift Aid for the first time… Complete the detachable Declaration in this edition of the magazine and either return it to the Parish Office or leave in the special ‘post box’ in the Church Porch. Further copies of the Declaration are also available from the Parish Office and the Church Porch. You may wish to keep a copy of your Declaration – please ask Iris the Parish Administrator if you wish her to provide a copy for you.

Page 18

The Parish can claim Gift Aid retrospectively for up to four years. You will see that the Declaration includes the following: Please treat as Gift Aid all qualifying donations I have made in the last 4 years and all subsequent donations until I notify you otherwise. If you have not paid sufficient tax in any of the last four tax years, it is important that you let us know which, if any, of those earlier years do qualify. Don’t hesitate to speak to the Rector, the Curate or to any member of the Treasurership Team, in confidence, if you require further information on any aspect of the Gift Aid Scheme. And for those who have already signed Gift Aid Declarations… It has been some time since many of the current Declarations were signed. It is good practice that Declarations are refreshed on a regular basis, and over the next few months existing gift aiders will be contacted with a view to signing new Declarations. Many thanks for taking the time to read this and we would urge you to consider Gift Aiding, if you are eligible. Easter in my Hand There’s a rainbow in my hand Full of colours that are bright. They remind me of the Saviour Who was born on Christmas night. He left his throne in Heaven To forgive the sins of man. The candy from this egg Will reveal his mighty plan. The purple one reminds me Of the sin that’s in my heart. It separated God from man And drove them both apart. The red candy reminds me Of the blood that Jesus lost. When he went up on the hill And he died upon the cross. Then Sunday morning came And the stone was rolled away. By the orange light of sunrise Christ arose on Easter day. Green is the colour of the New life in the spring. It tells me of the new life That knowing Jesus brings. Yellow is the colour of The gold that lines the street. In Heaven up above Where Jesus we will meet. The rainbow in my hand says That Jesus died for me. The Saviour in my life says That now my heart is free. The SWEET Truth of Easter These candies tell a story the best news you’ll ever hear. It’s about Jesus dying on the cross so that we could be brought near. So hold them and turn them and you will see ... the “M” become a “W”, an “E” and then a “3″ . The “E” stands for Easter God’s everlasting love and His eternal plan. It reminds us of the cross and the way God rescued sinful man. The “3″ represents the 3 days Jesus spent in the grave By His death, His children He did save . The “M” reminds us of the mercy the Messiah showed as He died in our place. and the miracle of the resurrection so we can see Him face to face. The “W” reminds us that He alone is worthy of our worship and praise and calls us to be His witnesses around the world for all of our days. Bethany Tapp
