sponsored by PHOTO CORNER DO YOU WANT TO BE FEATURED IN OUR PHOTO CORNER Submit your photo online at www southernidahokids com submit photo In the heart of Oakley a venerable 117 year old structure stands as a cherished landmark for the community Howells Opera House erected in 1907 by Benjamin Price Howells not only occupies a central position in the neighborhood but also serves as a hub for residents to gather create lasting memories and share their passion for theater with the wider world Unfortunately in 2021 the McCain building faced closure due to safety concerns arising from its deteriorating roof In August of that year members of the Oakley Valley Arts Council made a troubling discovery the 1 2 Page theater s iconic curved ceiling was sagging necessitating extensive renovations and structural improvements By June 2022 an architectural plan was in place revealing that the endeavor would require close to 360 000 to complete HOWELLS OPERA HOUSE Horizontal Undeterred by the daunting task ahead the council sprang into action launching fundraisers and establishing a GoFundMe campaign to rally support for the theater s restoration Remarkably the community responded with unwavering generosity pouring their resources into the cause Among the notable contributors were McCain Foods Gary Jones Construction and the Idaho Heritage Trust each playing a pivotal role in reviving the theater s glory McCain Foods in particular made a significant contribution of 50 301 contractor support of the hydrojet 7 500 alongside more than 200 hours of volunteer work from its employees and leadership team We are delighted to have played a part in preserving such a treasured piece of Oakley s history remarked Geno Palomo with McCain Foods Our commitment to support communities remains steadfast and we look forward to seeing Howells Opera House continue to thrive Through the collective efforts of dedicated individuals and organizations Howells Opera House stands once again as a beacon of culture and community spirit in Oakley Idaho 23 A p r i l 2 0 2 4
