YEAR IN 14
REVIEW15
42 Porto at Central da Picaria With full rent support from our benefactor MEO, 42 Porto relocated to a new campus at Central daPicaria, a historic building in downtown Porto, this year in March.Since opening our doors in June 2022 at the former Palácio dos Correios - provided by foundingpartner Critical Techworks - 42 Porto has experienced rapid growth. This new space enables 42 tosignificantly expand its presence in Porto and the North of the country, meeting the increasingdemand for the course from both Portuguese and international students. With nearly 400 students, 500 candidates per Piscine season, and a growing number ofpedagogical initiatives and advanced programs, we now have an incredible space to thrive andaccommodate our ambitious growth plans.YEAR OF CHANGE16
42 Lisboa at Factory Lisbon42 Lisboa moved in August from its first address in a former printing house in Penha de França toFactory Lisbon, at the Beato Innovation District. Our campus now occupies 1,200 square meterswithin a dynamic hub that hosts various startups and scaleups.Factory Lisbon embodies everything that 42 aspires to: innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Our ambition is to provide our students with a vibrant working environment, surrounded by techcompanies, startups, and a constant stream of creative initiatives and cultural events. We sincerely thank BA Glass, Mercedes-Benz.io, NTT DATA, Porto Innovation Hub, and Sonae forwarmly welcoming our students to study in their offices during our transition to our new homes.During this period, our students had the opportunity to attend talks, take on coding challenges, andexperience different working environments. Your support has been invaluable in making thistransition enriching and smooth.17

By the end of 2024, since its launch in 2020, 42 in Portugal had receivedover 60,000 applications. These numbers reflect the tremendous effort tobuild awareness of the 42 brand, resulting in a consistently high volume ofapplications across both campuses over the years. From 2020 to 2024, 29 Piscines were held, welcoming over 4,500 high-potential candidates, with a conversion rate of approximately 35% (~1,700enrolled students). In 2025, with growing interest in 42 Portugal, each campus will now hostfour Piscines per year - half in winter and half in summer - welcoming 200 to250 participants per selecting session. This means we expect between 1,500and 2,000 new pisciners during the year.Beyond numbers, 42 Portugal has continuously enhanced the learningexperience through structural and pedagogical initiatives. A key focus hasbeen increasing gender diversity and the proportion of students aged 18 to25, as they are more likely to commit full-time to the program. To boost female participation, targeted marketing efforts led to a significantrise in female pisciners from 20% in 2020 to nearly 25% in 2024. Attracting high school students, parents, and educators has also been apriority. Since 2022, participation in career fairs like Futurália, open houseevents, and geolocated social media campaigns has helped increase thepercentage of 18–25-year-old pisciners in Lisboa that currently representmore than half of total candidates. However, in Porto, efforts continue toreach the desired numbers (38%).THE PISCINES+60 KApplications4.5 KPisciners29Piscines19

With students from over 30 nationalities of 4continents, our community thrives on the richness of different perspectives and experiences. This cohort has people from all backgrounds, each contributing their unique experience andskill sets. By working together, they resolve challenges in ways that reflect their experiences, from a fashion designer learning to write code to a media manager applying creativeproblem-solving in technology. The school welcomes students who don’t follow the traditional education path, whetherbecause the conventional model doesn’t suit them or because they need to work while learningthe skills needed for the job market. By not requiring prerequisites, we make educationaccessible to everyone, no matter their background. These milestones mark significant achievements and key progress points.Students are expected to complete three milestones in their first year and three in their secondyear. Based on this timeline, we anticipate around 300 graduates in 2025, adding to the first100 students who have already completed the Common Core.21
Since December 2022, 42 in Portugal has been conducting a biannual student satisfactionsurvey to gain valuable insights into the student experience. The results allow us to celebrateour successes while continuously identifying opportunities for growth. In 2024, we are proudto see that over 90% of students who participated in the survey would recommend 42 to theirpeers. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of our learning model and the trust studentsplace in the program. At the same time, the survey highlights areas where we can evolve to better meet studentneeds. One of the most important findings is the growing number of students balancing theirstudies with other commitments, particularly work. In Lisbon, almost half of the studentsbalance 42 with other studies or employment. In Porto, this percentage is even higher, with asubstantial number holding full-time or part-time jobs. This reality shapes their experience at42, influencing their engagement, participation, and progression through the curriculum. With such a diverse student body, expectations around time commitment and flexibility remaina key discussion point. While 42’s peer-learning model offers a unique level of freedom, thedata confirms that students who dedicate less than 20 hours per week face a significantlyhigher risk of dropping out. To help students succeed, we continue to reinforce clearcommunication from the very beginning of their journey—whether as candidates, pisciners, oractive students—ensuring they fully understand the commitment required to succeed at 42.More than just developing technical skills, students are developing autonomy andresponsibility, essential skills that prepare them for real-world challenges.INSIGHTS FROM STUDENTS22
Beyond the academic experience, we recognize the importance of a strong, connectedcommunity. The latest survey revealed that while students appreciate the events and initiativesin place, participation levels remain lower than expected. Many students express difficulty inattending activities due to scheduling conflicts, particularly those who work during traditionalbusiness hours. To address this, we are developing more flexible scheduling options andinitiatives that allow for interactions across cohorts and campuses.Another central theme in the surveys was career support. As students progress in their studies, they naturally look ahead to their next steps in the job market. Some students feel that jobopportunities that are presented to them do not always align with their technical level. Inresponse, we are expanding our career services team and increasing the number of career-focused workshops and networking events to ensure students are not only well-prepared butalso well-connected to industry opportunities, to ensure a smooth transition to their desiredcareer. 23
BUILDING A STRONG COMMUNITYThroughout 2024, 42 in Portugal has remained committed to providing a diverse range ofinitiatives designed to boost student engagement, development, and skill-building. Our focushas been on building an inclusive community where students are encouraged to connect, collaborate, and grow. This diversity not only enriches the learning environment but also positions our community tomake a meaningful impact on the tech sector in the future. The synergy between individualsfrom different backgrounds enables an environment of continuous learning, where eachinteraction brings new ideas and mutual respect. This atmosphere helps students navigatechallenges, preparing them to become adaptable professionals with a global perspective. Both campuses prioritised empowering students to take ownership of their campus life throughsupport for their Student Associations and Student Clubs. These groups played an essential rolein shaping the campus experience, organising events, and building a sense of community.Clubs like the English Club, Entrepreneurship Club, Hardware Club, and Game DevelopmentClub provided spaces for students to connect, explore their interests, and collaborate onprojects aligned with their passions.Building on the success of the previous editions of the Ford Program, which connects newstudents with experienced peers, we continue to encourage the sharing of knowledge, particularly around the unique responsibilities and challenges at 42. Looking ahead to 2025,we are excited to launch a new mentorship program, pairing students with alumni and industryleaders in a more structured way. This initiative aims to offer tailored career support, givingstudents the chance to gain insights from professionals in the tech industry and better navigatetheir career paths. We also continued our efforts to reduce gender inequality in the tech sector. Through strategicpartnerships with organizations such as As Raparigas do Código and Women in TechPortugal, and through targeted social media and email marketing campaigns, we worked toengage and support female candidates. Additionally, we were represented at major eventslike the Women in Tech Porto Summit, where we highlighted the role of women in technology. As part of our global network, 42 students had access to remote events such as Fireside Chatswith 42 Alumni, Talks & Masterclasses on various topics, and International CodingChallenges, connecting them with an international tech ecosystem. At the core of our student engagement efforts were the monthly community meetings, wherestudents received updates, shared experiences, and celebrated milestones. These gatheringsallowed students to connect with peers and staff, stay informed about campus life, andpromote a stronger sense of belonging within the 42 Portugal community. Milestones werecelebrated by offering new badges to students for each completed milestone, recognizing theirachievements along the way. Over one-third of our students subscribed to participate in atleast one monthly community meeting.24
As part of our commitment to student well-being, Student Counselors at the 42 Lisboa andPorto campuses have played a key role in supporting student mental health and success.Taking into consideration significant campus changes and the challenges of our teachingmodel, they have consistently provided vital support, promoting emotional well-being. They’vealso offered basic mental and physical first aid training to help students manage campusemergencies. Additionally, they’ve organized team-building activities to strengthen thecommunity and encourage collaboration. Through these efforts, we continue to prioritizemental health as a key factor in student successOur relationships with 42 supporting companies were further strengthened in 2024, providingstudents with increased opportunities for access to highly qualifies professionals,internships/job offers and networking. These collaborations offered real-world experiences thatenriched students' learning and development. For 2025, we are committed to maintaining ouremployability targets at near full capacity by actively supporting students in securinginternships and job placements after graduation. As part of our strong relationships, a major highlight of the year was the organization of 7Hackathons and coding challenges, engaging over 100 students in solving real-worldchallenges in collaboration with industry partners, including BA Glass, Axians, Google Cloud,Vicaima, and CaetanoBus. One standout moment was when the team from 42 Porto won theGoogle Cloud Hackathon: Leveraging AI for Portugal, underscoring the exceptional talent andinnovation within our student community. Competing against five other universities, andsecuring first place made the victory even more special. In addition, more than 30 workshops and masterclasses with industry professionals providestudents with valuable insights into current trends and best practices. Initiatives like 42 Talksand the new Tech Steps Series, led by industry representatives and subject matter experts, hadtremendous positive feedback.Looking ahead, we are excited to launch new partnerships and expand our internshipprograms, (e.g. ASTRA Program), potentializing job offers with our current ones, providingmore real-world experiences for our students.25
During the year 2024, we saw a big improvement in the digital presence of 42 Lisboa and 42Porto in terms of community growth and variety of used digital platforms such as Instagram,LinkedIn, or YouTube with a growth of more than 14,000 followers online. In terms of digital content for Instagram and LinkedIn, we have endeavored to invest increating content that not only explains and informs, but also shares testimonies from studentsand donors. Regarding the students’ testimonies, we created different social media campaignssuch as Piscine Portraits, in which we tell the story of different candidates who carry out thePiscine, or the Your42Project section, in which we share several of the projects created by ourstudents. Besides our social media presence, 2024 saw the birth of 42's first periodical newsletter inPortugal. Our monthly newsletter had 10 editions this year in which we created acommunication channel to bring us closer to the community by sharing our partners' initiatives, showcasing members of our staff team and our graduating students, showcasing our project'sgreat achievements or the latest news on campus life. The monthly newsletter that we started inMarch already counts with a database of almost 2000 subscribers. In addition, we launched anew website, with a simpler and clearer design, where one can find all the informationregarding what is 42, how to apply and how can someone become a donor.Last but not least, 42 garnered significant media attention, with over 50 mentions acrossvarious platforms, including articles, podcasts, and press releases. These features helpedamplify our presence, reaching a broad audience and reinforcing our impact in the educationand technology industries.ONLINE & MEDIA PRESENCE26
In 2024, the 42 Porto campus relocated between February and March, while the 42 Lisboacampus moved between July and August. As a result, 42 Porto now has an installed capacityof 200 computers, and 42 Lisboa has 262 computers. According to 42 references, thisprovides us with the capacity to accommodate over 1,200 enrolled students, offering amplespace and room for further growthSignificant strides were made in education and technology to align with the rapidly evolvingdigital world. The final common-core project underwent an important update, ensuring itaccurately reflects the evolution of modern technological trends. This revision aimed to equipstudents with skills that meet the current demands of a tech-driven society, bridging the gapbetween theoretical knowledge and practical application in real-world scenarios.Another major highlight of the year was the implementation of five dedicated projects focusedon enhancing cybersecurity within Windows platforms. These initiatives were designed toaddress growing security concerns and ensure the protection of sensitive data in anincreasingly connected environment. Each project introduced innovative solutions, fosteringgreater awareness and strengthening defenses against cyber threats, reinforcing theimportance of cybersecurity in both educational and professional settings. With the fast-paced growth of the school and the AI spread there also were several reviews ofcheating and peer review policies, alongside the testing of a proprietary anti-cheating tool.In October, we launched the first edition of the Piscine Reloaded, a week-long refresher beforeKick-off, with over 200 participants. Designed to reinforce key concepts and fostercollaboration, this initiative will continue in 2025, supporting future cohorts in their transition tothe core program.IT & PEDAGO UPDATES27

I joined 42 for the opportunity of learning how to code, from the total basicsto a deeper and more advanced understanding, at my own pace. Also, I wasnot so sure if programming would be the way I wanted to go with my life, butthe fact that the school was totally free of charge encouraged me to sign upas I had nothing to lose, and in the end, it ended up being one of the bestdecisions in my life.Right now I’m working at Nokia, in the 5G and 6G area, more specifically inthe Layer 1 department, where we develop software that deals with thetransition of digital information into radio waves. At the end of 2024, we proudly achieved a fantastic milestone of 100 graduates. We are committed to supporting our graduates in their career pursuits and will workdiligently to place them in the most desirable employment opportunities. Our goal is toensure that our graduates have the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in theirchosen fields and make significant contributions to their respective industries. We areconfident that our graduates will be highly sought after by employers, and we will spareno effort in assisting them in securing rewarding and fulfilling careers.Afonso CarvalhoGraduated 42 LisboaWorks at NOKIAMárcia MotaGraduated 42 Lisboa Works at Study. netBefore joining 42, I worked as a graphic designer in the communicationsdepartment of a college in Lisbon. I applied to 42 Lisboa because it wasexactly the opportunity I was looking for. I had already researched otherprogramming courses and boot camps, but I didn't have the financialcapacity to attend them. 42's free and flexible model removed any doubtsI still had about making this career change.31
Previously I was studying at university in the Sound and Imageprogramme. I joined the school because technology has always beenan area of interest and 42's methodology made me very curious andenthusiastic. I'm currently working at Celfinet, a telecoms consultancythat was recently taken over by an Indian national - Cyient. I work as aJava Software Developer in a team developing an internal product. Inthe future I'd like to have a start-up. Where I would have the space toimplement and approach new ideas that are difficult to implement in amore ‘corporate’ world.I joined 42 because I wanted to make a career change into the ITsector. Being free and part of a global network, 42 Lisboa seemed tome by far the best option in an ocean of either overpriced or unproveneducational programs. Also, I was very interested in trying the school’speer-learning approach, as classical education wasn’t geared towardmy learning style.Right as I finished the Common Core, I started working as an Android Developer at Critical TechWorks. Being one of the school’s sponsors,CTW is committed to betting on new talents, and as such I’ve had theamazing opportunity to undergo two months of in-house training withsome of the best minds in the business. My aspiration is simple: to continue growing as a developer and makean impact on the people around me. Being involved in software thatcan be used worldwide, as I am right now, makes me feel I’m on theright track. And it’s all thanks to 42!I joined 42 because I wanted to learn software engineeringand fully embrace the 42 learning method and proposal. Before joining 42, I was a Distribution Driver in a launderette. I decidedto join 42 because I realised that it wasn't the path I wanted to follow forthe rest of my life. I've always enjoyed programming and solvingproblems, and 42 seemed like the best choice for developing those skills.Right now I'm working at Sonae MC as a PL/SQL developer. My biggestinspiration is using technology to improve people's lives. I believe thattechnology has the potential to make a positive impact on society. Fromcreating innovative solutions to solve everyday problems to developingsystems that promote sustainability and make the world more sustainable.I was at university studying engineering with computer science. It wasCovid time and I was very unmotivated by online learning. One day Isaw an advert on instagram about a new programming school called 42that stood out for its peer-to-peer learning method. I decided to sign upand the rest is history. One of the things that motivates me most abouttechnology is the fact that it's constantly developing. The continuoustechnological evolution guarantees that I will never stop learning newthings, and that I will never get bored or stagnate professionally. I canimagine myself working in different areas of technology, because so farit's rare for me to pick up something I don't like. What I really aspire to isusing technological innovation to make a positive contribution to society.I was a computer technician and spent seven years as a full-timevolunteer in social work. I joined the school because I studiedprogramming as a teenager and really enjoyed it, but as I didn'thave the opportunity to go into the field, I became a technician. For me, the school was an attempt to find out if I still likedprogramming.Maria SottomayorGraduated 42 Lisboa Works at 42 PortoBruno CostaGraduated 42 PortoWorks at Sonae MCWalter CruzGraduated 42 PortoWorks at RTE S.A33
