MISSION, VISION &VALUESLos Angeles Music and Art School (LAMusArt) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization whosemission is to offer the community of East Los Angeles, primarily its K-12 population, equitableand affordable access to multidisciplinary arts education programs and performanceopportunities so students are afforded the skills and tools needed for success, regardless ofgender, ethnicity, ability or socio-economic status. Since 1945, LAMusArt has remaineddedicated to the provision of free and/or low-cost high quality, sequential arts instruction inmusic, art, dance and drama so that our majority Hispanic/Latino community has the meansto experience creative achievement, collaboration and expression year round. Our diverseprograms are designed to foster a creative community that embraces culture and values artseducation as an integral part of a child’s development. We believe affordable and equitable arts education programs work to benefit students andthe community by expanding one’s world outlook, sharpening one’s creative skills, andcontributing to one’s social, behavioral, and academic development. We aim to diversify thecreative landscape of LA by providing equitable opportunities for our youth community toexperience success and safety through the arts. MISSIONVISION & VALUES

HISTORY & WHO WE SERVELAMusArt was founded by educator andphilanthropist, Pearle Irene Odell, in 1945.Odell envisioned a creative resource for theyoungsters of East LA that addressed theneed for affordable arts education in thearea. The organization began as a pay-what-you-can music school, providinglessons in various instruments out of twoVictorian homes in Boyle Heights. In the1960s, LAMusArt broke ground on thefacility we call home today, and has sinceexpanded to offer music, art, dance, anddrama instruction to hundreds of studentsannually. To this day, LAMusArt is committed toproviding accessible creative education tounderrepresented communities in East LosAngeles and beyond. OUR PROGRAMSMusic, Art, Dance and Drama are the four artistic pillars of instruction at LAMusArt. Programming andcurriculum planning is focused on the K-12 population and instruction is tailored to each student’s needs,interests, and rate of progression.LAMusArt's Curriculum Framework was developed toassess the effectiveness of our programs and studentprogress. SUCCESS STORIES& HIGHLIGHTSIn 2024, LAMusArt was selected as one of 15organizations to be awarded the Lark Award fromthe Durfee Foundation. The Lark Awards supportthe collective care and renewal of staff at smallcommunity-centered organizations with deep rootsin their Los Angeles communities.A major highlight of the year was the expansion ofour tuition-free music program in January 2024 toinclude the tuition-free Composition Fellowship, amusic composition course for advanced youngmusicians to sharpen their music composing skillsthrough mentorship and collaboration, culminatingin a performance of original student work. Inauguralstudent, David Sandoval, debuted an originalorchestral piece entitled “The McNugget ManDance” that was performed by LAMusArt’s Tuition-Free Orchestra in August 2024. A STEP TOWARDSCOLLECTIVE CARENEW TUITION-FREEMUSIC OFFERINGS25+100%Teaching Artists EmployedAdministrative Staff RetentionPERFORMANCESAROUND TOWNLAMusArt partnered with a number of localinstitutions to broaden our reach and provide ourstudents with performance opportunities aroundthe county! In 2024, we took our Playmakingstudents to Boston Court Pasadena to performoriginal work; brought our Mariachi musicians tothe East LA Youth Mariachi Festival; joined KingTaco’s Sueno de Navidad roster of performanceswith our Choir; had our young ballerinas grace thestage at the Santa Fe Springs Arts Festival andhosted dozens of concerts, showcases and recitalson our own Courtyard Stage!2024
