A NOTE FROM LEADERSHIPJohn LamirandeBoard PresidentTravel stories taught me about exotic and magical places that I wouldsomeday visit. Biographies introduced me to people and ideas thathelped shape my view of what the future could or should look like.Mysteries and adventure stories made me consider looking beyond thesurface for the deeper and more complex stories that may lie underneath. And nature stories gave me appreciation of the beauty, complexity andfragility of the world around us. In other words, my world became larger, richer, and more rounded because of the gift of reading. And at ParentisFoundation, we believe that every child deserves that same experience. The goal of our Empowering Readersprogram is to plant that seed of lifelonglearning through tutoring and mentoring, and to nourish it so that each child canrealize their full potential. Nothing bringsmore joy to our wonderful tutors thanmeeting with a student whose excitementabout reading a new story can hardly becontained, or who describes how proudthey are of reading a story they justlearned to a parent, grandparent orsibling. That is a key measure of oursuccess, opening the doors to a betterfuture for children that just needed a littleboost to build their curiosity and comfortwith reading. As a kid, reading helped open up a much larger world to me than thestreet I grew up on. Reading is the foundation for all future learning, and every strongbuilding benefits from a solid foundation.

Janice Frechette-ArtingerExecutive DirectorEmpowering Readers OC is more than just a new name—it is the evolutionof years of commitment to nurturing young readers, fosteringintergenerational connections, and providing a brighter future for childrenin our community. It represents the next phase in our journey, as wedeepen our efforts to empower 1st through 5th grade students with theliteracy skills they need to succeed, both academically and in life. The challenges of illiteracy and poverty are deeply intertwined. Researchshows that children who cannot read proficiently by the end of third gradeare four times more likely to drop out of high school, significantly limitingtheir future opportunities. Turning the page to Empowering Readers OC marks a powerful newchapter for us. Together, we’re reaching more children, building brighterfutures, and creating lasting change. Thank you for being part of thisjourney. -- Janice Frechette-ArtingerReflecting on this past year fills me with pride and gratitude. Thanksto the dedication of our volunteers, partners, and supporters, wecontinue advancing our mission to break the cycle of poverty throughliteracy intervention. This year, we’ve turned a new chapter in ourliteracy program with the launch of Empowering Readers OC, aninitiative that continues to expand our reach to even more children inneed of critical literacy support.Turning the page to a new chapter:Introducing Empowering Readers OC.
