Financial support— “a huge part of our recruitment,” says Joshua— is just one of the ways ARCS can help the department be more competitive with private schools. “The networking support is really valuable as well,” he continues. “Not just across the campus, but across the entire ARCS organization.” And then there are the students themselves. Joshua rmly believes in the power of existing students as a recruitment tool. “Top students bring in other top students,” he says. With the added incentive of ARCS Fellowships, the department can attract even more of the best scholars. Once they’re here, they not only benet the important work of the department, many also go on to benet Seattle’s biotech industry, an important driver of the local economy. “A lot of our students are new to the Pacic Northwest,” Joshua comments. “They often fall in love with the city and decide to stay, which builds the biotech network in the city.”College of Engineering Aeronautics & Astronautics Bioengineering (Jointly with School of Medicine) Chemical Engineering Civil & Environmental Engineering Computer Science & Engineering Electrical & Computer Engineering Industrial Engineering Materials Science & Engineering Mechanical EngineeringCollege of the Environment Aquatic & Fishery Sciences Atmospheric Sciences Earth & Space Sciences Environmental & Forest Sciences Oceanography Quantitative Ecology & Resource Management (QERM) Graduate School (Interdisciplinary) Molecular & Cellular Biology NeuroscienceSchool of Dentistry Department of Oral Health Sciences (includes DDS/ PhD and PhD degree programs) School of Medicine Bioengineering (Jointly with School of Medicine) Genome Sciences Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) Microbiology

By giving to graduate education, ARCS Foundation Seattle Chapter is investing in the next generation of scientists, researchers and scholars, who will tackle complex problems to build a healthier and more equitable world.” Joy Williamson-Lott Dean of the UW Graduate SchoolTurtle MayARCS Scholar 2021 - 2024Environmental & Forest SciencesUniversity of Washington“Indigenous communities feel the impacts of environmental issues disproportionately,” says second-year ARCS Fellow Turtle May. She’s working with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation on an environmental issue that’s become all-too-familiar in the western United States: wildres. “They’ve been experiencing a lot more wildres over the past six years,” she notes. “And they’re a sovereign nation, with less government oversight and fewer restrictions, so they can do more to address environmental issues with natural resources.” Turtle, who is Cherokee, is evaluating what’s working and what’s not in the eorts to minimize the impacts of wildres when they occur. And her research has the potential to inuence forest management far beyond the northeast reaches of Washington state. She’ll soon be presenting her work to the Intertribal Timber Council, attended by tribal members from across the country.Turtle is grateful to be continuing her studies at the UW, among the country’s top 10 schools for environmental sciences and forestry. But, she says, “I wasn’t prepared for the extremely high cost of living in Seattle.” She credits ARCS as playing a role in her decision to enroll. “I had some options I was considering but ARCS was the icing on the cake,” she comments. “The additional support, the interest in me and what I wanted to do…those were the deciding factors.”School of Public Health Biostatistics Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences Epidemiology Institute for Public Health Genetics Pathobiology

She’s speaking of recently graduated Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVMs), who typically conclude those studies with a substantial amount of debt. “We’re seeking students to pursue PhDs after their DVMs—to do research,” she continues, “but the dierence between what they can make in the job market and graduate stipends is just too great.”That’s where ARCS makes a dierence. “Being able to oer ARCS Fellowships is really useful in our recruitment eorts,” Kelly notes. The department, which has a focus on infectious disease and has an international reputation for its vector-borne disease studies, is also looking to grow and expand diversity across its pro-grams. “We’re looking to increase opportunities to get the best students, and we see ARCS as a key part of that,” Kelly comments. Those students are vital to continuing the im-portant work of the department—which includes studies of tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, and others that aect both humans and livestock. One of the studied livestock pathogens results in losses of over $300 million per year in the US alone. A breakthrough would have huge impacts globally. And with the added tool of ARCS Fellowships, the department can continue to attract the top scholars who can help make such a breakthrough happen.

Allison HerrickARCS Scholar 2020 - 2023Animal Sciences, Washington State UniversityDairy is in Allison Herrick’s blood. Growing up on a dairy farm owned by her aunt and uncle in upstate New York, she watched her father work as a herdsman and wanted to learn more. She joined 4-H at age 8, won a calf at age 10 and started her own herd shortly thereafter. Through those experiences, she says, “I fell in love with the dairy industry.”After completing her undergrad in animal and dairy science at Cornell University in 2020, Allison began considering schools for her postgraduate work. “I wasn’t really looking at anything beyond the East Coast,” she notes. 7Washington State UniversityCollege of Veterinary Medicine Global Health Molecular Biosciences Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience Veterinary Clinical Sciences Veterinary Microbiology and PathologyARCS was a key factor in her decision to continue her studies at WSU. She toured and knew it felt great—but the cross-country move gave her pause. Then she learned of the ARCS program. “It was the last, nal step,” she says. “I knew WSU was the right t.”Now a third-year Fellow, Allison is studying cattle genetics, specically disease and genomic selection, which can help predict the future performance of an individual animal based on DNA. Her work could make a big dierence for dairy farmers—like her aunt and uncle—who work with tight nancial margins. Ultimately, she hopes to work with producers on breeding programs, helping to ensure that investments are cost-eective and oer increased return.“WSU deeply appreciates the ARCS Foundation’s tireless commitment to supporting the advancement of science through graduate education. Doctoral students are critical to the success of our research mission. Our students’ research helps fulll our land-grant mission, and ARCS enriches the student experience through its mentoring and networking opportunities.” Elizabeth ChiltonChancellor & Provost of WSU Pullman

ARCS FOUNDATION SEATTLE CHAPTERis grateful to our 2023 Partners for their generous supportWe are proud to name Brenden Fraser-Hevlin as the 2023 Dorothy L. Simpson Leadership Award recipient. Brenden earned his BS degree in Bioengineering from Oregon State University. He is now a PhD candidate at the WSU Voiland School of Chemical Engineering & Bioengineering with an emphasis on cancer immunotherapy. His research includes design of a new centrifugal bioreactor (CBR) to culture cells for cancer treatments. Brenden is a major contributor on a patent for unique technologies incorporated within the CBR prototype design. As part of university-wide training, he is implementing new models that allow for simulation and prevention of cyberattacks on sensors connected to the CBR. Brenden is committed to achieving scientic discoveries that will ultimately transform the eld of cancer care. He also inspires undergraduate students to continue their future careers as engineers and scientists. Throughout his studies, Brenden has mentored several undergraduate students who are members of groups underrepresented in STEM elds.
