Friz Freleng Biography

by Hawk Veluz

Friz Freleng was one of the pioneers of modern animation. He created multiple original characters along the lines of Pink Panther, Bugs Bunny, and Yosemite Sam. He, along with Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Robert McKimson and Tex Avery, were the main force behind Warner Bros. Cartoons Inc.

I chose Friz Freleng for my Famous Animator Project because he created many popular cartoons that I used to watch when I was younger, such as Pink Panther and Looney Tunes.

Friz Freleng was born with the name of  Isadore Freleng, on August 21, 1906, in Kansas City Missouri. He first started animating with no background knowledge at the United Film Advancement Services at the age of 17. He moved to Disney Studios, where he was credited for the first time for the "Alice Series" in 1927. He proceeded to do work for Robert Winker Productions in 1928, where he worked on shows like Fiery Fireman. In 1929 he moved to Screen Gems and worked on Port Whines, but his main animation career started when he moved to Warner Bros. Studios. Under their supervision, he created multiple of the time periods most famous cartoons. He became head animator/producer of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. Once Tex Avery and Robert Campett left Warner Bros. Studios,  1963, he created DePatie-Freleng Sutdios with David DePatie, where they created the Pink Panther animated TV series. He moved back to Warner Bros. Studios where he then directed multiple specials  such as Daffy Duck's Quackbusters (1988), Porky Pig in Hollywood(1988), and Secrets of Toontown (1988). He retired in 1986, and died on May 26, 1995, in Los Angeles, California. Over all, he created over 300 cartoons for Warner Bros. and other studios. He recieved 5 Academy Awards for his works.
