A NEW LEAF:
THE PARAMETERS PROJECT

The development of work presented in, “Parameters Project”, started with an ‘assignment’ I gave myself as the Covid Pandemic began to change ways of working (and living) in March 2020. “Sheltering-in-place” with limited access to materials, and less access to my shared jewellery studio presented the challenge of continuing a creative practice. I had been exploring uses for the waste laminate materials created from making my laser-cut interlocked jewellery. I had plastic sheets of [almost] stencils, (the absence of the shapes I use in my jewellery), that I started to use as stencils. On 9” x 12” sheets of watercolor paper I inked-in compositions with the “stencils” that I then painted with watercolor. Each sheet had a self-imposed “parameter” such as monochromatic color, directional patterns, or only use homemade ink.

Once the compositions on the front were complete, I flipped the paper over and again used the stencils to nest shapes next to each other, without regard for the coloration/pattern on the flipside.

I then cut out the stenciled shapes with scissors; each small iconic shape was a small watercolor composition that I would never have actively chosen to create. An Arts Nova Scotia grant provided  for the framing of 10 families of compositions. In December 2022 I will present new jewellery work that explores intuition, chance, color and new materials inspired by and alongside watercolor compositions.

Mobilia gallery has provided the space for the 10 final groupings of selected watercolor paintings to be exhibited for the first time alongside the piece of adornment they inspired. Ten 15” x 15” square frames each contain 8-10 small (appx. 1.5”) compositions. New works of adornment are made from natural dyed fabrics, painted wood, carved foam, aluminum, fine silver, and the colorful laminate Rebecca is known for. A “capsule” collection of works made during an artist residency at the Illias Lalaounis Museum in Greece can be viewed in the gallery.

RESIDENCY IN
ATHENS, GREECE AT THE LALAOUNIS MUSEUM

Thank you to the Canada Council for the Arts for assisting with

funding for the artist to attend this residency.

In Summer 2022, Rebecca Hannon was an artist in residence at the Ilias Lalaounis Jewellery Museum in Athens, Greece supported by a Canada council grant. The museum was the site of the original Lalaounis workshops, nestled at the base of the acropolis. During her two months, Rebecca had a chance to soak up the greatest hits of western culture as well as developing a new body of work using the historic technique chasing and repoussé on thick and responsive fine silver. It was a new experience to be embedded in a workshop within a public museum and favorite questions from the summer were “how does one train to be a Goldsmith”, and “how long is that going to take?” A capsule collection of works created in Greece are currently on view at Mobilia Gallery.

The Ilias Lalaounis Jewellery Museum was founded by its namesake, Ilias Lalaounis (1920-2013), in 1993 at the foot of the foot of the Acropolis. Lalaounis, a jeweller, artist, and academician is world renowned for creating luxurious gold jewelry steeped in history. He opened 38 Lalaounis galleries worldwide and was a favorite of Jacqueline Onassis to whom Lalaounis gifted the iconic Apollo 11 moon earrings.  His creations were exhibited in over 70 solo exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide. Among them the “Victoria and Albert Museum” and the “Smithsonian Institute”.

Museum director Johanna Lalaounis founded the artist-in-residence program embedded right in the museum to activate the spaces and welcome new communities. Local and International artists can find out more about applying to this special opportunity here: http://www.lalaounis-jewelrymuseum.gr/jair-jewelry-artist-in-residence-program-en/
