Honduras
Bordering Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, Honduras is one of the poorest Spanish-speaking countries in the Western Hemisphere. In a country of more than 9 million inhabitants, Honduras has nearly 65% of its population living in poverty, with 48.3% living below the poverty line. Poverty rates are higher among rural and indigenous people as well as in the south, west and along the eastern border than in the north and central areas where most of Honduras' industries and infrastructure are concentrated.
Struggling with high levels of economic inequality, Honduras ranks among the worst 25 nations in the world for income inequality. Its Gini index coefficient, which measures the degree of inequality in the distribution of family income within a country, is 48.2, according to the World Bank. By comparison, Nigeria’s is 35.1, while the United States has a ratio of 41.1.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the unprecedented impact of two successive hurricanes in recent years significantly affected Honduras’ economy, and its aftermath continues. Expectations are for the country’s gross domestic product to contract by 9% and the poverty line to rise to 55.4%.
FFTP began serving the poor people of Honduras in 1999, and works closely with our in-country partner CEPUDO (Capacitación, Educación, Producción, Unificación, Desarrollo y Organización) to implement international relief and economic development projects throughout all of Honduras.
San Marcos and MacuelizoSan Marcos and Macuelizo are municipalities in the department of Santa Bárbara, Honduras. Both have a large population of people suffering from extreme poverty.
San Marcos
The municipality of San Marcos has a total population of 16,238 people spanning across 20 communities and 63 hamlets. Many make their income working in agricultural production, specializing in coffee, sugar cane, vegetables and milk production. The women in San Marcos mostly serve as housewives, relying on their husbands to bring in money for their families.
While families in San Marcos encounter many daily challenges, it has not quelled their hope. In 2006, it was declared the "Capital of Traditional Games in Honduras" due to the festivals the community celebrates.
The municipality has 2,633 houses in its rural areas, most of which are made of wood, wattle (twigs and branches), bahareque, zinc and awnings. Many households cook using firewood, which poses a health risk due to smoke inhalation.
Through your generous gift, FFTP will build 20 two-bedroom homes for extremely impoverished families in San Marcos.
Macuelizo
The muncipality of Macuelizo is home to 6,076 residents. Like their neighbors in San Marcos, many residents make a living through agricultural production, cultivating basic grains and animal husbandry. Sadly, this work has not produced enough funds for families to live above the poverty line. As such, many families live in extreme poverty without adequate places to live.
Most of the houses in Macuelizo are made of wood, bahareque and zinc. This makes the houses unsafe and unstable for the families to live in, and they pose a constant threat to residents' health and overall safety.
For many, the main source of water is the public water system, and households use firewood in order to cook their food.
With your support, FFTP would construct five new homes for impoverished families in Macuelizo.
Help Build Your Neighbor a HomeFamilies in San Marcos and Macuelizo battle poverty each day, and 25 pf them are praying that someone will bless them with the gift of a home. The little income that they generate are from meager tasks, and many families earn about $50 a month, which does not cover their most basic needs.
In addition to the daily trials of poverty, families in San Marcos and Macuelizo have suffered many horrific events.
