While cities expand, our environment depletes at an unprecedented rate. Believing how we see the built environment can play a contributing role in aecting change, I sought to create a structure that explores the complex relationship between nature and architecture to foster a dialogue around a heightened awareness with our surrounding. 20,000 dislodged trees were reported in New York City in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. According to a Parks Department estimate, more than 1,000 trees fall each year across the ve boroughs. Equally remarkable is the amount of wood disgarded by the demolition industry. As climate change beckons local solutions that can respond to worsening regional disasters, this proposal draws on the value of displaced resources found in the city. Engaging the work of NYCitySlab, a socially and environmentally conscious group dedicated to reclaiming displaced trees and salvaging wood in New York City, as well as Allocco Recycling, located along the East river in Greenpoint, the design minimizes environmental costs associated with material acquisition and transport while highlighting local sustainable practices. Materials from the pavilion will be returned to the two organizations to be reused or recycled following de-installation, thereby extending the lifecycle of borrowed resources. The resulting structure gives meaning to perished materials and brings awareness to local practices in a collaboration to create a venue for public action.5A Medium for DiscoveryA Sustainable Portal for New Observations and Reections New York, New YorkArchitecture Competition, Finalist
Salvaged wood from fallen trees and construc-tion sites. Reclaimed wood is brought back to yard and sorted/cutSelected lumber will be laid out to be inspected, dried, and fabricated ositeReclaimed Material ResearchThe project undertook research to understand the process of salvaging lumber around the city and the treatment process involved in reusing reclaimed wood materials for construction. Reclaimed Material ResearchBetween midtown Manhattan and the rapidly developing Long Island City waterfront, Roosevelt Island is ideally situated to witness and reect on the city’s growing cabon footprint. The structure is created to orient the viewer from arrival to frame views toward sites of unbridled urban development.
