Welcome to Purposeful Copywork I am thrilled that you ve decided to make this book a part of your school year First off I must admit that this program was created with unschoolers in mind That being said I hope that homeschoolers worldschoolers and all other kinds of schoolers find these books useful and engaging I know that it sounds like an oxymoron creating a curriculum for unschoolers I like to refer to these books as learning tools instead My aim behind creating Purposeful Copywork was centered around an attempt to encourage my children to engage with fabulous and useful pieces of classic literature and I mean really engage I want them to take the whole of the novel in and make it uniquely their own to listen to the books think about the books copy the books and paint the books Mostly I really want my children to appreciate and love the unique genius behind each one of these brilliant stories I have been homeschooling for seven years My homeschooling journey started out in a very structured place As I continued on my journey I have gravitated naturally towards the freedom that unschooling has to offer For my own sanity in my adventures of attempting to teach five kids at once I have been forced to adopt new strategies Purposeful Copywork is one of those strategies Copywork is incredibly versatile It teaches sentence structure spelling encourages the use of new vocabulary helps with printing practice and introduces new and unique writing styles to students Oftentimes copywork achieves this without the student even being aware of the fact I m all for multiple use materials and copywork ticks a lot of the boxes that I value The opportunities for artwork included in these books are what really brings a personal touch to these learning tools For the younger students who tackle Charlotte s Web and Alice in Wonderland the artwork focuses on character development and adding an element of personal creativity For older students who gravitate towards Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde the artwork focuses on the emotional the symbolic and the strange The choice of images and quotes included are my attempt to draw out the main themes and get the students emotionally invested in the story I want them to explore Wilber s joys and sorrow Charlotte s resourcefulness and bravery Alice s curiosity and bewilderment Victor Frankenstein s obsession and regret his monster s forlorn loneliness and rage Dr Utterson s calm inquisitiveness Dr Jekyll s horror and remorse and Mr Hyde s cunning and murderous wrath I hope that all these objectives can be accomplished through the art projects and passages provided How to use these books These books are meant to be used as creatively as possible Each child is different and every parent teacher has unique objectives and values that they seek to instill into their students I made these books to reflect my own values purposes and objectives However I tried to craft Purposeful Copywork loosely in hopes that these tools can be used by many kinds of unique students and valued by many different types of parents teachers These books do not follow a chapter by chapter schedule My original attempt to do this was foiled by the realization that I if I did I would be missing many meaningful and beautifully crafted passages that could be thought about wondered about and brooded over I didn t want to be limited to one amazing series of thoughts per chapter Instead I chose to focus on the portions of the story that stood out to me the most those that had become ingrained in my consciousness over my years of reading and appreciating these books This may be frustrating to some who enjoy a more structured learning style and for that I apologize However every creator has their reasons and I wanted parents and students to know mine Because of this students will finish either reading or listening to the novels on audiobook long before they have completed the copywork and art I have chosen to view this as extra time for my older students to reflect upon the story and the material For my younger students the large amount of 4

Page 5

copywork is useful for writing and spelling practice and the artwork helps expand their creativity The extra time also gives my older students the opportunity to explore bunny trails branches or avenues that came up as they read the book For example after the student finishes the story they can research the life of the author biography what was going on historically during the time period the book was written that may have influenced the authors subject matter documentaries that may pertain to the book ECT movies made about the book classical philosophical discussions in respects to the complexity of the dichotomy between good and evil character sketch bubbles of each essential character in the story the impression that certain characters left upon them whether for good or ill the intricacy behind what it means to be human empathy and disgust These topics can be compiled into an essay written on any topic Essentially these learning tools are really yours to play with You can x x x x x x go through each copywork passage and pull out daily vocabulary and spelling words for your student to practice dictate the passage to your student and choose spelling words from their errors get your students to listen to various pieces of classical music that fit the mood as they complete the art projects encourage your students to focus on choosing colors that reflect the emotion behind each art piece in order to further explore the symbolism linking feeling to colour buy a graphic novel to supplement your student s learning experience the list is truly endless You can do the minimum or take these books to the maximum Any way that you choose to use them is the way that they were meant to be used It is up to you to decide I hope that you get as much joy out of using Purposeful Copywork as I did while creating it Sarah Kuntz 5

ALL in the golden afternoon Full leisurely we glide For both our oars with little skill By little arms are plied While little hands make vain pretence Our wanderings to guide Ah cruel Three In such an hour Beneath such dreamy weather To beg a tale of breath too weak To stir the tiniest feather Yet what can one poor voice avail Against three tongues together 7

Anon to sudden silence won In fancy they pursue The dream child moving through a land Of wonders wild and new In friendly chat with bird or beast And half believe it true And ever as the story drained The wells of fancy dry And faintly strove that weary one To put the subject by The rest next time It is next time The happy voices cry 9

Thus grew the tale of Wonderland Thus slowly one by one Its quaint events were hammered out And now the tale is done And home we steer a merry crew Beneath the setting sun Alice a childish story take And with gentle hand Lay it were Childhood s dreams are twined In Memory s mystic band Like pilgrim s wither d wreath of flowers Pluck d in a far off land 11

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank and of having nothing to do once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading but it had no pictures or conversations in it and what is the use of a book thought Alice without pictures or conversation So she was considering in her own mind as well as she could for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid whether the pleasure of making a daisy chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her 13

There was nothing so VERY remarkable in that nor did Alice think it so VERY much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself Oh dear Oh dear I shall be late when she thought it over afterwards it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this but at the time it all seemed quite natural but when the Rabbit actually TOOK A WATCH OUT OF ITS WAISTCOAT POCKET and looked at it and then hurried on Alice started to her feet for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat pocket or a watch to take out of it and burning with curiosity she ran across the field after it and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge 15

In another moment down went Alice after it never once considering how in the world she was to get out again The rabbit hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way and then dipped suddenly down so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well Either the well was very deep or she fell very slowly for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next First she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to but it was too dark to see anything Well thought Alice to herself after such a fall as this I shall think nothing of tumbling downstairs How brave they ll all think me at home 18

Down down down Would the fall NEVER come to an end I wonder how many miles I ve fallen by this time she said aloud I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth Let me see that would be four thousand miles down I think for you see Alice had learnt several things of this sort in her lessons in the schoolroom and though this was not a VERY good opportunity for showing off her knowledge as there was no one to listen to her still it was good practice to say it over yes that s about the right distance but then I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I ve got to Alice had no idea what Latitude was or Longitude either but thought they were nice grand words to say 21

Presently she began again I wonder if I shall fall right THROUGH the earth How funny it ll seem to come out among the people that walk with their heads downward The Antipathies I think she was rather glad there WAS no one listening this time as it didn t sound at all the right word but I shall have to ask them what the name of the country is you know Please Ma am is this New Zealand or Australia and she tried to curtsey as she spoke fancy CURTSEYING as you re falling through the air Do you think you could manage it And what an ignorant little girl she ll think me for asking No it ll never do to ask perhaps I shall see it written up somewhere 25

How doth the little crocodile Improve his shining tail And pour the waters of the Nile On every golden scale How cheerfully he seems to grin How neatly spread his claws And welcome little fishes in With gently smiling jaws 29
