Alcove De Kore The artAlcove De Kore is an amazing art magazine that focuses on a dierent subject of art with every issue. This is not necessarily a contemporary magazine! There may be an issue where the focus may be on the renaissance period, pinup art, impressionism, abstract art, or even culinary art! There are thousands of dier-ent mediums, styles, and forms of artistic expression, and therefore thousands of dierent concepts. This issue’s focus is on the exploration of saturation. The artistic denition of saturation, is using color theory to exemplify colors maximum intensity. Using pure color, there is an absence of greyscale. Artistic intention, and deep thought, are found behind artists use of dierent colors. You will nd that color throughout culture has vastlly dierent meanings, and the use of dierent colors is used intentionally to evoke dierent emotional responses. Muted colors can be used in artistic works, to enhance a saturated portion of a piece. Often times, muted colors and intense colors work together to increase saturation.ALL ABOUT ALCOVE DE KOREAlcove De Kore is a place to let the artist shine. ARTWORK BY: LIOBA BRUCKNERLioba Brückner (b. 1988) is a painter based in Oberhausen, Germany. She portrays young women in a surrealistic manner superimposed by plants or insects while submerged in dripping oil colour and translu-cent layers. Her subjects transport a melancholic and dreamful mood while often seem lost in thoughts.Every painting is a reection of thoughts and feelings she experiences during the time period of creation. Lioba uses her specic aesthetic for her portraits which derives from her fascination of the beauty in every woman. Inuenced by contemporary artists, old masters, her admiration for nature, Japan, science-ction and fantasy movies her art is in a constant state of development.Lioba Brückner studied with Markus Lüpertzand received her diploma under Tony Cragg at theAbout Lioba BrucknerWATERCOLOR5

ARTWORK BY: LIOBA BRUCKNERacademy of arts in Düsseldorf 2012. She exhi-bits nationally and internationally. She lives and works in Oberhausen, Germany.Lioba was chosen as the cover artist for this magazine because her work not only uses pure color, but in some images the pieces pop o the page and appear to illuminate. She is so advan-ced with her knowledge of color theory, that she uses this knowledge to make aspects of her paintings glow.Lioba has done incredible exhibitions since 2010, and today oers classes on how to paint. She tackles the controvertial topic of using AI for reference photos with grace. It used to take painters in the mid century months to work from a live reference, let alone nish a painting. Modern day, AI art is a con-troversy to be sure, but Lioba uses this tool to create imaginative art in a more timely fashion to be a more competitive artist. Although drawing from a live reference is a com-mendable advanced study, Lioba uses techno-logy to help her construct her own ideas, before dipping the brush into her paints. WATERCOLOR6

Cover Artist InterviewQuestion One: How Important is using color in your art?Answer: Finding the right color palette is in-credibley important. The wrong color choices can ruin your art therefore it’s super important to make color studies beforehand.Question Two: If a decesead master artist were alive today, of whom would you wish to ob-serve for a day?Answer: I would love to watch the ancient Egyptians how they went about creating their beautiful murals and statues for the noble class of Pharaos, kings and queens.Question Three: What themes or culture inspi-re you to paint?Answer: I am inspired by a range of cultures and themes. Ancient Egypt is the obvious one, but also Japanese Art, ancient Roman, Greek and even older cultures like the Sumerians. I am also deeply drawn to everything middle ages related like knights, princesses, crusa-ders and warriors in general or the Christian Church in the early beginnings..But I also love ancient arabic art like their beautiful mosaics, or viking, Germanic and pagan art. To sum it up, everything ancient and sophisticated fasci-nates me deeply.Question Four: Whats is your go to drink?Answer: My go-to drink is a mild sweet coee with oat milk.Question Five: A lot of artists are intimidated by color. As an artist who uses a lot of color theory in your work, what’s some advice to help artists out there overcome this intimidati-on of using color? And do you have any advice to follow up with that, for artists out there?Answer: My advice to artists intimidated by color is to start small. Begin by understanding basic color theory and how colors interact with each other. Practice by creating small co-lor studies and get many inspirations. A limi-ted palette will often look better than a super colorful one. Over time, you can increase the complexity of your work. My additional advice would be to not be afraid of making mistakes. They are often our greatest teachers. Also watch my YouTube videos that I made about colors! Experiment, learn, and most impor-tantly, enjoy the process.8

Five stars, a golden ticket, the highest caliber of praise I can come up with, and the best book I have ever read in my life goes to Kingdom Of The Wicked. Before I get into this review, I want any reader coming across this page to know that I am not easy to please. Im an extremely harsh critic, and my time is very valuable. So when I say to the most cynical of readers that this book is worth your time, believe that it is. This is a binge worthy book. The story begins with striking featured twins, Emilia and Vittoria. They seem complete op-posites. But as you read, you notice their bond seems deeper than the foundations of the earth.Raised by a coven of witches, the twins are shocked when brutal murders take place to the young witches in their town. The humans become frantic with their own ideas and conspiracies. The witches however, knew these murdered girls were magical beings, and knew something much larger was at play.Giant gaping holes are left open in these mur-dered girls chests, their hearts all absent from the scene. As the witches cite spells of caution over their cornicellos, no mere witches spell can stop whats coming. Emilia is shattered when Vittoria goes missing, and eventually, happens upon her once beau-tiful sisters brutalized corpse. This is where the story begins, and I dont believe Sherlock Holmes himself could predict the dramatic impressive twists Kerri Maniscalco weaves. Kerri Maniscalco takes you down a road of dark magic, demon princes, and other-worldly secrets. The twists and turns of this series, is truly, dramatic. This was a highly intricate plot. More to this very point, before each chapter, there are cooking recipes or spell citations from witches of old. Maniscalco added these tiny additions, which greatly added a touch of beauty, before the start of a new chapter. The plot was so intri-cate, the recipes or notes just furthered the impression this was a deeply thought out plot. One of the most refreshing aspects of “King-dom of the Wicked,” is that it is marketed as a young adult novel, but reads like an adult novel. This alone was why the book was so believable. Adult scenes added sophistication and realism to the plot. Writing fantasy novels, especially about demons, witches, or vampires, can get very cliche if authors are not tactful. Its perpetuated a lot in the world of literature. Ker-ri Maniscalco paired gory and steamy scenes, with a heavily thought out plot, making the entire series completely original. Scenes where the character gathered important information pressured the reader to pay close attention because the plot was so intricate. It was almost didactic in the most genuine of compliments. Kerri Maniscalcos talent dees repetition, ele-vates her own original art, and showcases just how griping her plots are; making “Kingdom of The Wicked” a rare gem in the world of liltera-ture. ARTWORK BY ALENA HENNESSYColor has the power to tell a beautiful story. There is so much to know about color, not just for artists but for everyone! The more our po-pulation understands color theory, the more people can understand an artists intentions, a businesses intentions, and dierent culture meanings just from the dierences in color! The color wheel was rst created by Sir Isaac Newton in the 17th century, but of course color existed long before that! The world’s oldest color, is bright pink; discovered in the Sahara Desert by scientists crushing 1.1 billion-year-old rock. The rst known color to the earth may be pink, but the rst color used in art - was the color red! Red ochre was found in a cave painting in spain with triangles and lines etched upon it, which dates back over 75,000 years. What’s even more interesting, is how that same color red deve-loped a completely dierent meaning across cultures around the globe. In Latin America, red can have religious conno-tations when combined with white. In the Mid-dle East, red evokes the meaning of danger as well as caution. In China and India, the color red symbolizes luck as well as happiness, prosperity, Knowing your Color Wheel21

fertility, and more; so much so that Hindu Bri-des traditionally wear red on their wedding day. Those are just prime examples of how diverse color theory is to all people. They give meaning to people who view and appreciate art, as well as artists looking to expand their knowledge about art history. With that being said, let’s look at a few more fun facts about some dierent colors! Fun Fact One:Fun Fact One: Blue is the most favorite color of people around the world, according to global marketing rms. Fun Fact Two:Fun Fact Two: The color yellow has been scienti-cally proven to make people hungry! Fun Fact Three:Fun Fact Three: The color pink has been proven to supress anger and anxiety, and is actually used in mental care institutions and prisons to help calm people down. Fun Fact Four:Fun Fact Four: People are more likely to forget an image if it is in black and white. Fun Fact Five:Fun Fact Five: Men and women really do see colors dierently! Women see the color green in much richer hues, while men see things in less yellow hues. ARTWORK BY ALENA HENNESSY22

Are you looking for a compelling story that will leave you with a bad book hangover, even as you cry at the un-fairness of the world and hurl the last book of the series across your apart-ment in anger? If so, The Mirror Visitor series by Christelle Dabos is a perfect t for you. Our typical ‘plain to the point of ugly’, and ‘not your normal type of girl,’ pro-tagonist is ripped from her family and home and thrust into a world of poli-tics and intrigue that are so far over her head that it’ll leave you yelling in frus-tration and wanting to reach through the pages and strangle her. Her new ‘husband’ needs his head beaten into a hard surface repeatedly; and the ten-sion between the two will leave you wondering how it will nally explode between them: Violence or passion? The answer? Both. The plot twists and turns and at times the only connections between va-rious plot lines is the same darkness of space that holds the pieces of the world together after ‘God’ ripped the family spirits apart and sent them to their rooms as punishment. Dabos will leave you breathless as she grips you in her tale while at the same time leading you through a discussion on society’s obsession with ‘dreams’ and ‘virtual reality’ along with making us question the connections between our selves and any higher being we might worship. Is God a cruel ca-pricious asshole, or a loving mother trying to teach her children the error of their ways? Will the remnants of the pieces of earth held together only by faulty gravity fall away into the darkness of space? How can they pilot space dirigibles between continents without getting lost, and where is the rem-nants of earth’s core. How does heat distribution work? Suspend your grip on reality and embrace that all these questions are answered with magic. Are you looking for:Enemies to friends to enemies to lovers to enemies to friends? Dragons, dream walkers, tele-paths, telekinetic’ s, magical assassins, assholes who think they’re better than you just because they have eidetic memories?A man-boy who needs to have been put in time out, or at least had someo-ne sit him down and explain that you don’t remain 10 years old forever, stal-king is in fact a crime, as is murder, and so is experimentation on animals?Alternate universes?Steampunk meets Mythology?Relationships that border on incest, but aren’t technically because of gene-rational gaps?A scarf that is probably the best character?Yes to all and a story that will leave you wishing for a 5th book in the series and deeply mistrusting mirrors. Saturation involves a diverse and contrasting use of color the-ory. For artists looking to push the boundaries involving satu-ration, consider using “metal leaf,” or “gold leaf.” The saturation in gold leaf is so high, you can see your own reection. This is a great tool for those looking to go beyond just the colors of the color wheel, try exploring dierent mediums! Gold leaf is a dicult medium to use, and breaks easy so gluing it delicately and keeping all fans o in your space is essential.Essential Utensils32

How to Be ConfidentIt took a lot of people tearing me down in order to realize I needed to lift myself up. Sometimes, you just have to be your own Hercules. Strength had to be found on my own. It got to the point where I was made fun of every day by friends and family, there seemed no redemption of my self esteem. In school I was ‘pantsed’ often, boys and girls would pull my pants down in public as a teenager. Peers would laugh at my makeup or clothes to show o in front of friends, as if tearing me down made them look nicer. I earned the name ‘ugly duckling’ from peers. I’m not saying I had a tough life. It is far from the truth. But throughout all this, my con-dence got lost somewhere. As my condence has been repaired, I feel I can share steps on how to repair ANY damaged self esteem!Step One: Surround yourself with good peo-ple. This is probably the most dicult step of all the steps I’m going to list, because the world now a days tends to like ‘cutting people o.’ The world is not black and white, there are shades of gray, like fa-mily for instance. If the people who tear you down are awfully close to you, simply start with getting busy, and accepting less pho-ne calls. If you are busy with a new hobby or club, and can’t make it to the phone, you cant be faulted for it! This is a great way to nourish gray areas by knocking o two birds with one stone. Getting busy with a new hobby for one, might just be the healthy thing you needed all along, you can start working on that bucket list, and it keeps you from lying to people pretending to be busy! If this step involves cutting people out of your life because of health issues, then perhaps seek therapy rst. But remember, accepting less phone calls, getting busy, and perhaps gaining a new friend, might be a great solution you should actually try out this time.Step Two: Correct your posture. Stand up straight with your shoulders back with your chin up. Right o the bat, this makes eve-ryone more attractive to the public.Even if you don’t wear a back corrector, just being conscious of your posture helps you speak more clearly as if you deserve to be heard. Because you do!Step Three: Become someone you’d be wil-ling to follow. Step Four: Dress in a way that comforts yourself. People mistake this step for mate-rialism and its not. Materialism isnt a look. Materialism is putting material possesions above spiritual values. Paying 100 dollars for a purple shirt because you’ve had a good year, versus a brown 10 dollar shirt, doesnt mean youre materialistic. It means you like the color purple! Buying a gold necklace after a huge bonus at work, because maybe the buttery pendant on the front reminds you of a deceased relative, thats not bad values - and doesnt hurt other people. Not paying the rent for instance, and buying a new purse instead, is materialistic. The way you dress, makes a huge impact on your condence, and its not a crime to look a bit nicer if you keep your empathy and heart in the forefront of all encounters of your life. Empathy should always win out, but looking your best can help you feel almost hygenic and clean.WRITTEN BY: LUCRETZIA BIXTON33

What you see in this painting only exists within a memory, and within this series of the masterful artist Joseph Colyer. When this painting was rst created, it was a place Joseph could go to. Here he would walk and take in the tranquil stretch of beautiful land, unencumbered by the noise of a growing city. Now, each brush stroke on this grand 50x36 piece, holds with it an aching loss of what this once was. Since this was painted, Joesephs peaceful place now no longer exists. Housing developments now occupy what was once a beautiful stretch of land. Piece by piece, day by day, pieces of what once stood gets taken away to make way for larger exploitations. More people come to our parts, and it is an exciting notion to be sure. But when you gazeThe Lost Trails of Myrtle Beach39

into “Morning Tranquility,” you cant help but feel a sadness. The act of creating art is a deeply personal experience. Whether an artist is painting a masterpiece, composing a symphony, or sculpting a statue, they are pouring their thoughts, emotions, and experiences into their work. As Joeseph has done here, you can feel the days he walked through these now lost trails. When we view a piece of art, we are not just seeing the physical object before us; we are seeing a glimpse into the artist’s soul. We can sense their mood, their passions, their fears, and their hopes. We can feel their joy, their pain. In this very respect, art is what shapes our very culture. As culture lives through the artwork of others, this cities heart beats through the memory and history locals bring to their hometown; so that what once was, may never truly be lost. “MORNING TRANQUILITY”ARTWORK BY: JOSEPH COLYER 40
