About the Illustrator Sofia Brummitt is a student at The School of Ballet Theater Company and a member of the Junior Corps de Ballet She is a junior at Glastonbury High School and has received high honor roll recognition throughout high school In addition to dancing Sofia is an accomplished artist She has received three recognition awards from the Scholastic s Art and Writing regional competitions for works she has completed in school Sofia started her Graphics internship with Ballet Theatre Company in 2020 and since then has done illustrations for Snow White The Nutcracker and Aladdin the Dance a Thon and BTC s Community Youth Outreach Program

About the Aladdin ballet Ballet Theatre Company s production of Aladdin premiered at The Bushnell s Maxwell M Ruth R Belding Theater stage in three performances on Saturday April 23 and Sunday April 24 Originally set to make its debut in May 2020 the production features original choreography by Stephanie Dattellas staged to Carl Davis riveting score Dattellas process for the storyline was created through her research on One Thousand and One Nights a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian folk tales that were originally published together during the Islamic Golden Age The stories from historical tales to tragic romances to comedies were collected over many centuries by a huge range of scholars and authors In order to offer a more authentic cultural experience Dattellas invited collaboration from two choreographers who represent communities that are being depicted in the production s storyline The Characters Aladdin Aladdin is a mischievous young man who goes from rags to riches with the help of the Djinn in the magical lamp Aladdin s Mother Aladdin s Mother is always looking out for her son When he is sentenced to death she is the one who steps in and saves the day by secretly passing the magical lamp to Aladdin The Princess The Emperor s beautiful daughter She finds Aladdin to be quite interesting even before he becomes wealthy and later in the story she reveals her bravery when she helps to trick the Maghrib The Maghrib The Maghrib is an evil sorcerer and vizier to the Emperor who is hungry for wealth and power He spends most of the story trying to find and steal the magical lamp The Djinn The Djinn also known as the Slave of the Lamp is the spiritual being trapped inside the magical lamp He must obey the commands of the owner of the lamp and grant their requests until Aladdin sets him free The Emperor The Emperor is the ruler of Agrabah He does not approve of Aladdin s behavior at first but as soon as Aladdin uses the lamp to present the riches of the cave the Emperor is happy to grant Aladdin his daughter s hand in marriage The Diamond The Sovereign of the Cave of Riches She leads Aladdin to the Lamp The Rubies The Jewels of Passion and Love The Emeralds The Jewels of Envy and Arrogance The Sapphire The Goddess of the Sea Aladdin and Princess
