Grant a Wish

Make-A-Wish Foundation

Antonia Kincaid

How it all started

While on a late night stakeout, Officer Tommy Austin told Officer Ron Cox about a friend of his who had a son with leukemia. The kid's name was Chris Greicius. Chris' wish was to catch all the bad guys with Austin. Officer Austin wondered if there was something the Arizona Department of Public Safety could do to grant his wish. Officer Jim Eaves brought his patrol car, Officer Frank Shankwitz brought his motorcycle, and a Department helicopter flew Chris and his parents from the hospital to an empty lot by the department so he could tour the equipment. He was also given an old badge and an officer hat. Cox and Eaves also got Chris a custom made uniform and a battery powered motorcycle so he could learn to ride and get his officer motorcycle wings. Sadly, when the officers returned the next day to give Chris his wings, he had returned to the hospital and later passed away on May 3. After the funeral, Austin knew he wanted to start and organization where the wishes of sick children could be granted. The first donation was given to Officer Shankwitz by a grocery store manager of $15.
