Make the time like your life depends on it, because it does.” – Mel RobbinsIn 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives designated July asNational Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This initiative wascreated to spotlight the unique mental health challenges faced byminority communities and to raise awareness, reduce stigma, andimprove access to mental health services for underserved groups.Research continues to affirm an undeniable connection between raceand health disparities in the United States—including in mentalhealth.1 According to 2022 data:“Among adults with any mental illness, Hispanic (40%), Black(38%), and Asian (36%) adults were less likely than White adults(56%) to receive mental health services.”2Beyond economic and systemic barriers, minority individuals oftenface challenges such as:Limited availability of culturally competent providersSocial stigma and shame surrounding mental healthLanguage and communication gapsHistorical and current discrimination within healthcareinstitutions 3As a result, individuals in marginalized communities are left withfewer opportunities for early intervention, treatment, andrecovery. The medical and scientific communities have long sought to closethese gaps. As one researcher explained:“Studying health disparities isn’t about promoting one group overanother. It’s about identifying when, and for whom, systems aren’tworking—and finding ways to fix them.”4A Month of Recognition,A L i f e t i m e o f I m p a c tBARRIERS BEYOND ACCESSTHE ROLE OF RESEARCH ANDPUBLIC INSTITUTIONSAuthentic Insider |

That’s ten times the average cut seen across other NIHcenters.12–14This moment demands vigilance and advocacy. Page 21Authentic Insider | By Milena “Mila” StankovicI didn’t realize it at first. Honestly, I thought she wasjust a really good friend. She cared, she checked inconstantly, she remembered every detail of my life. She called me every day, always wanted to knowhow I was feeling, and I felt lucky to have someoneso invested in our friendship. But over time, it started to feel less like love – andmore like control. At first, it was small things.“Who were you with?”“You didn’t tell me you were going out.”“You had time to reply to her story but not mymessage?”I brushed it off as overthinking. Maybe I was being alittle distant. Maybe I should have kept her more inthe loop. That’s what good friends do, right? But the guilt started piling up. I found myselfexplaining my every move, apologizing forspending time with other people, dreading howshe’d react if I didn’t answer immediately. I was walking on eggshells in a relationship that wassupposed to be safe.Friendship, or Emotional Ownership? One night, I went out with a group of people shedidn’t really like. I didn’t mention it – not to besneaky, but because I knew she’d disapprove.Of course, she saw it on my story. The next morning, she texted:“Nice to know I have to find out what you’re doingthrough Instagram now.”I felt sick. Like I’d cheated on her. But this wasn’t arelationship. It was supposed to be a friendship. Why did I feel like I’d betrayed someone just forhaving a life?Over time, I realized something that hurt more thanI expected:She didn’t want a friend. She wanted a mirror.Someone to reflect her back to herself. Someonewho would choose her first every time. Someonewho wouldn’t grow or drift or evolve – unless itwas in her direction. If I had other people in my life, she felt rejected. If Iwas busy, she felt abandoned. And if I triedto talk about it, I became “cold,” “selfish,” or“different.”
Page 22The Hardest Part Was Saying “Enough!”Eventually, I had to set boundaries – for my ownpeace of mind. I stopped answering right away.I made space in my schedule for other people. I toldher, kindly but firmly, that I needed more balance. She didn’t take it well. There were tears, accusations, dramatic texts.“I guess I don’t matter to you anymore.” “Go enjoyyour new life with your new people.”And yet, underneath all that noise... I felt lighter. Iwasn’t being cruel. I was choosing to breathe. To Anyone Reading This…Possessive friendships often come from fear – fearof abandonment, fear of not being enough. But just because someone’s scared doesn’t meanthey get to control you.A real friend doesn’t need 24/7 access to your life. They don’t panic when you say no. Theydon’t punish you for having boundaries. They trust you. And they let you grow – even if thatgrowth means spending less time with them.I still care about her. I really do. But I’ve learnedthat caring for someone doesn’t mean you owethem your freedom. If your friendship feels more like pressure thanpeace…If you’re scared to say “I need space” Iflove starts to feel like a trap…It’s okay to take a step back. You’re not a badperson for needing air. You’re not heartless for wanting space. And you’redefinitely not wrong for walking away fromsomething that used to feel like home – but nowfeels like a cage. You deserve friendships that feel like freedom. Notpossession. It’s not friendshipIf you’ve ever:walked away from a friend and felt guilty insteadof free, hidden parts of your life to avoid their reaction, felt like you needed permission to just beyourself…You might not be in a friendship. You might be in an emotional chokehold, disguised as loyalty.Possessiveness isn’t care. It isn’t love. It’s fear, masked as devotion. And over time, itdoesn’t just take your energy – it takes youridentity. You start shrinking. Second-guessing. Walking oneggshells to protect someone else’s feelings, while yours get buried. At Heroes’ Stories, we talk about the quieterwounds – the kind that don’t always scream, butstill suffocate. We share the truth behind toxic friendships, emotional enmeshment, and the slow unravelingthat happens when love turns into control. And we don’t just name the pain – we help you healfrom it.“Possessivefriendships oftencome from fear – fearof abandonment, fearof not being enough.”Authentic Insider |

Page 25Authentic Insider | If you have walked outside within the pastmonth, you already know this summer isshaping up to be just as hot as last year’s - ifnot hotter. Many think of summer time as ahappy one - kids are free from school to runwild, adults soak up those long-saved PTO daysin the beachy sunshine. But that summer sunisn’t always as bright and friendly as it appearsto be - according to the AmericanPsychological Association, heat has distinctpsychological consequences - includingdepression, irritability, and impulsivity. Thesebehaviors are destructive and problematic -and they affect all of us the minute we stepoutside. Beating the Heat in 2025 SUM MER O F S E L F - L O V E :But as trauma survivor thrivers, there is nochallenge too painful for us to overcome -extreme heat on an otherwise pleasant summerday is simply another mental barrier which -like any other - can be overcome with manydifferent strategies.
Sending your child away to school for the day is hardenough - for both the child and the adult! Naturally, sending them away for a few weeks in the care of totalstrangers may seem daunting. However, multipleresearch institutes have proven a link betweenimprovements in youth mental health and theattendance of summer camp. PubMedCentral found, after meta-analysis of relevant studies, that youthattending summer camp reported general social, cognitive, and self-perception improvements - especiallywith camps designed for disadvantaged populations. Page 26Authentic Insider | Another study performed by American Camp Associationindicated a significant reduction in reported anxietysymptoms following the attendance of a sleepawaycamp. This study is particularly noteworthy because itaccounted for several crucial variables - camps with andwithout specialized mental health ‘programming’ (such asanxiety awareness efforts) - as well as campersdiagnosed and undiagnosed with mental healthconditions. This varied data suggests a strong linkbetween attending summer camp and reducing negativemental health symptoms like anxiety. So, while beingaway from home can be a daunting task for parent andchild alike, summer day or sleepaway camps are a greattool for trauma survivor thrivers of all ages to considerthis summer! S U M M E R C A M P
One does not even need to go camping - a simple walk innature at your local park or recreation area will suffice! Timeamong nature is the key here - and it will unlock many doorsfor you! MayoClinic.org claims exposure to nature canregulate the sympathetic nervous system (responsible forthe release of stress hormones) in as little as five minutes. Ithas also proved an effective treatment for symptoms ofPTSD and ADHD. In addition, UC Davis Health lists bettersleep and improved cognitive functioning as commonbenefits of natural, outdoor recreation. Page 27Authentic Insider | N A T U R E / C A M P I N GBut all the fun shouldn’t go to the kids this summer! Simplecamping, without the fees or commitments of a summercamp, can also improve your mental health when your nervesstart overheating. The term ‘happy camper’ is actuallyscientifically well-founded - The Outjoyment Report found97% of campers in their study reported ‘happiness’ as theprimary motivator behind their camping activities. Further,48% of campers in their study reported feeling happy everyday - versus 35% of non-campers. As a trauma survivorthriver, I can confirm that the few moments I have been ableto fully enjoy nature (beyond the view from the car window)have stuck with me - giving me strength in times of weakness, centering my worried mind in these truly chaotic times.
Page 28Authentic Insider | For our friends closer to the coast than the nearestforest or mountain range, fear not! The beach isanother classic spot for rest and relaxation - andmental recharging, too! Dr. Jurilla at Makati MedicalCenter, Philippines reminds us why: We all know how liberating the seabreeze feels in ourears - and how waves of calm wash over us in syncwith waves on the shore. This is because ofneurophysiology - our brain associates these soundswith the tranquility of time at the beach, and relaxesour mind and body. In addition to being a sensorysanctuary, the beach can act as a channel ofspiritual energy for many: B E A C H “The beach can offer psychological and spiritualmetaphors for things we want in our life thatsometimes escape us: spaciousness, playfulness…a sense that time has slowed down,” (Buttimer). “Vitamin D from the sun increasesserotonin levels… More serotonin means abetter overall mood, reduced anxiety, andeven better sleep… It’s why depression islinked to Vitamin D deficiency.”

There may be some realization around a past mistake or a sense that a messageis coming soon, perhaps from someone who’s been on your mind. For some, July marks thestart of a new chapter, a fresh start. A truth is being revealed, and it may involverecognizing disloyalty from someone close. From another deck, I received the same core message: someone is gaining deep insightabout themselves. A miracle is unfolding for someone—and others may be talking about it.Be cautious of the energy around you; not everyone has your best interest at heart. Thegood news? This situation is destined to work out in your favor. If you're waiting for ablessing, stay grateful for what you have, even as you prepare to receive what’s coming.Overall, change is in motion. A long-awaited message is coming in. Be mindful: people arewatching, observing. The collective is cutting ties, moving forward, and embracingtransformation. Endings bring new beginnings.See you in AugustAbout JoyJoy is a Narcissistic AbuseSurvivor who has made it herlife's work to help others throughlife coaching.
