49th Annual Meeting & ExpositionSmall Leaks sInk great shIpsSunday, August 1Tuesday, August 3 Sara Nofziger-Drew, Director of Client Relationsof HealthPro Medical Billing Inc, in her session, questioned whether we have the appropriatefixes for the holes, in some cases, gaping ones,in our revenue cycle. She began by questioning us, “Do you knowwhat your reimbursement rates are? Do youknow where you are losing money” Do theseanswers come quickly to you? If not, sheprovided six critical areas for us to considerensuring we maintain our financial viabilitythrough welding these reimbursement holesrather than plugging them with a cork. These six critical areas to be attentive toinclude:1.CodingThis area is where the revenue managementcycle begins, and if we don’ get it right, there isno payment. After all, garbage in, garbage out!By: Nicole Dhanraj, PhD,CRA,RT, R,CT,MR)2. Timely processingWe must understand our metrics. What is theaverage reimbursement turnaround? Howmany days are we in accounts receivable? Howlong does it take for our claims to go out? Dowe know our contractual obligations forpayment? These answers will ensure that yourpayments are happening timely and smoothly.3.Validation Is the exam getting to the billing departmentand out the door accurately? It’s easy for examsto get lost, held up due to missing informationor changes from the radiologists that maycause it to get delayed in the billing cycle, orworse yet, never get out the door andultimately paid.36| Convention Daily As imaging leaders in the21st century, we need tobe mindful of our dollars, squeezing every pennywe could find in ourbudget. However, though we are aware ofmaximizing our profits, we may not be focused on the right areas of therevenue cycle, consequently losing precious dollars.

Denials The goal is to prevent denials, but keep in mindthat not all denials are preventable.5.Accurate payment Is this the payment we should be receiving? Arewe leaving money on the table due to incorrectbilling?6. AuditAuditing the process to ensure the right tacticsare in place and inconsistencies resolved throughfollow-up. You don’t want a vicious cycle ofinaccuracies, suboptimal operations percolatingthrough your revenue cycle. Small Leaks sInk great shIpsContinuedShe cautioned us to be aware of the littleexpenses and emphasized this warning byreminding us that small leaks sink great ships. So, carve out time in your calendar, and gothrough your revenue cycle process. Buildbetter strategies to weld those leaks.Otherwise, you will need a bucket, not only tobail you out but to collect the tears if you arenot attentive to these critical areas she shared. Otherwise, you arefacilitating money down thedrain. Remember, you don’twant to be losing money.Auditing is your tool forwelding those holes. For most of us, more thanlikely, there is money left inyour revenue cycle. Sara urgedus to work with our billingdepartments, the chieffinancial officer, and any otherstakeholder to understandbetter what is happeningbefore, during, and after therevenue cycle.

49th Annual Meeting & ExpositionStark Laws, RemuneratIon, SafeHarbor, Oh MY!!By: Danielle Henricksen, MBA, BSRT (R)(CRA)Tuesday, August 3When attending the AHRA annualconference, I always make it a point to hitthe sessions that will help me stay up todate on regulations and legislation thataffects our industry. I must not be theonly one since the overflow room was inhigh demand for this presentation. Beingan early morning session, that isimpressive! Adrienne Dresevic and Clinton Mikel, attorneys with Health Law Partners, PC,did a great job covering the hot legaltopics relevant to Radiology. The recommendation of Five BestPractices will be something I share withmy organization upon my return toNebraska. The question and answersession was also a great discussionwhich brought it all together to showreal-life examples of things that canhappen. I highly recommend a review ofthis presentation handout to ensurecompliance for your organizations.Updates on Stark Laws, Anti-KickbackStatutes, Safe Harbor, and Cybersecuritywere all discussed in this overview. Mostinteresting to me was the ExecutiveOrder on Improving the Nation'sCybersecurity that came out in May2021. 11 | Convention Daily
