A grassroots movement committed to growing opportunities for community and civic engagement T By Laura Kirk Director Central Arkansas Kitchen Cabinet he restaurant industry is rapidly changing and finding a path to sustainability is more important than ever In Arkansas we know the restaurant industry is a driving force in our state s economy One goal of the Arkansas Hospitality Association AHA is to create more opportunities to bring the strength of restaurants to community conversations To achieve this goal the AHA has partnered with the National Restaurant Association and is launching the Central Arkansas Kitchen Cabinet CAKC The CAKC provides opportunities for restaurant operators to get engaged and build relationships with Central Arkansas Communities and our local elected officials By leading local initiatives to create comprehensive game plans for restaurant industry mobilization and involvement in the community and change in local regulations for the Central Arkansas area the CAKC can build pathways toward change in areas that are important to restauranteurs In the fourth quarter of 2019 we decided upon three initiatives The first is a roundtable discussion featuring Congressman French Hill Some topics of the discussion will include ServSafe requirements workforce issues and the overall growth and forecast for the restaurant industry for 2020 The second initiative is a partnership with the Sheriff s Youth Ranch The Ranch s mission is to address remedy PG 14 I HOLIDAY 2019 I ARKANSAS HOSPITALITY and prevent child abuse and neglect by creating safe healthy and permanent homes for children 90 of the ranches funding comes from charitable giving and with four residences and up to eight children in each and one house parent you can imagine it is tough for the Ranch to ensure each child has something under the tree So we have partnered with Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott to provide gifts for five children and supplies and toiletries for at least one home Our third initiative is a partnership with City Director Ward 3 Kathy Webb and the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance Our AHA Central Arkansas members will donate items for the Alliance s holiday baskets that will go to families in the Central Arkansas area that need assistance for the holidays We are planning our 2020 events now and they include more roundtables community engagement activities and networking opportunities for our members As we meet with our elected officials we want to represent your ideas and concerns We would love to hear from you What thoughts do you have for possible partner programs Are there any industry concerns or issues you would like to discuss What are you already doing in the community If you want to learn more about the Central Arkansas Kitchen Cabinet please drop me a note at laura arhospitality org Join our Facebook Group https www facebook com groups centralarkansaskitchencabinet

HOTEL INDUSTRY SUPPORTS MORE THAN 1 IN 25 AMERICAN JOBS American Hotel Lodging Association U nderscoring the significant economic impact and strong growth of the hotel industry a new study released today finds that hotels support more than 1 in 25 American jobs 8 3 million in total and contribute nearly 660 billion annually to U S GDP attracts more guests employment has expanded to new highs reaching 2 3 million hotel jobs directly on property a gain of more than 160 000 hotel jobs since 2015 The total number of U S jobs supported by the hotel industry has increased by 1 1 million since 2015 Conducted by Oxford Economics the study was sponsored by the American Hotel Lodging Association AHLA and the American Hotel Lodging Educational Foundation AHELF and showcases the breadth and depth of the hotel industry and its value to the communities we serve The study is part of AHLA s Dreams Happen Here campaign which highlights the ways hotels power our economy support our employees grow and groom employees and serve the world s travelers The Oxford analysis includes a breakdown of the industry s economic impact in every state and congressional district in America View the report and additional information here Hotels support a total of 395 billion in This report builds on the dynamic growth the hotel industry has seen in the last decade Hotel industry sales have increased 43 5 percent since 2010 with 1 3 billion guests staying in American hotels last year As the industry PG 24 I HOLIDAY 2019 I ARKANSAS HOSPITALITY Additional key findings from the research include wages salaries and other compensation both directly at our properties and in the communities we serve A representative hotel with 100 occupied rooms supports more than 240 local jobs and generates 18 4 million in guest spending For every 100 hotel guests spend on lodging another 222 is spent at the destination totaling 278 billion per year spent on transportation dining shopping etc at U S businesses during stays Hotels generate 186 billion that goes back to communities through local state and federal taxes
