The Devastating Impact of LonelinessLoneliness isn’t just an emotional struggle;it’s a serious health issue. Studies showthat prolonged loneliness can be asdamaging to health as serious physical health conditions. It increases the risk ofhigh blood pressure, heart disease, depression, and even dementia.Mental well-being is also at risk. Feelinglonely can lead to deep sadness, anxiety, and a loss of confidence. Some olderpeople stop reaching out altogether, believing they have no one left who cares.Steps to Combat LonelinessBut loneliness doesn’t have to be a lifesentence. Small changes can make a hugedifference.Loneliness in Later LifeThe silent struggle of older peopleIn the quiet corners of our towns andcities, behind closed doors, loneliness issilently stealing the joy from too manyolder lives. As the world rushes past, many older people find themselvesfeeling invisible, disconnected, andlonging for meaningful companionship. It’s a heartbreaking reality, one thataffects not just emotional well-being butalso physical health.A Hidden EpidemicLoneliness among older people in the UK isan escalating crisis. According to Age UK,around 1.4 million older people in the UKoften feel lonely. For some, days or even weeks can passwithout speaking to another person. Theloss of a partner, family moving away, reduced mobility, or health issues can allcontribute to feelings of isolation. Winter can be especially tough. Darkernights and colder weather make it harderto get out, and for many, the festiveseason is a painful reminder of lost lovedones. Even in the warmth of summer, loneliness can persist, with older peoplewatching the world carry on without them, feeling as though they no longer have aplace in it. The lack of social interactioncan turn everyday moments into painfulreminders of what has been lost.12

Although more older people are digitallyconnecting, there are still millions ofpeople aged 50+ who are not online. Post-Covid, we have seen an acceleratedshift towards digital and on-line services invarious parts of our everyday life – forexample, banking, shopping, getting a GPappointment, ordering a prescription, staying connected with friends and family. But – if you lack the necessary digital skills, are fearful about entering a ‘digital world’or if you just do not want anythingdigitally, the pace of change towards more‘digital access’ can feel a significantchallenge. Age UK National found that the top threereasons why people aged 65+ do not usethe internet are lack of skills, lack of trustof the internet and lack of access to ITequipment and/or broadband access. What does digital inclusion mean?Digital inclusion means access to and theskills to effectively use the internet andelectronic devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop etc). Why does digital inclusion matter? It gives access to key services on-line suchas banking, shopping and health services,as well as staying connected with lovedones (via text, video calls etc) - if this issomething you would like to do.What if I just do not want to be partof a digital world?Last year, Age UK National launched their‘Offline and Overlooked’ campaign whichaims to save offline access to essentialservices – like booking a healthappointment and paying for parking whichincreasingly are only accessible on-line.Older adults who cannot or who do notwish to use the internet should continue tohave the same access to services as thosewho choose to go on-line. We promotethis campaign locally, lobbying serviceswhere we can and on behalf of olderadults in Mid Mersey who prefer ‘offline’services.Getting DigitallySkilled & ConfidentEmpowerment through digital inclusion2.7 million people aged 65 & over donot use the internet25% of people aged 65 and over in theUK don’t use the internet69% of people over 75 are not able touse the internet safely andsuccessfully14

Page 24

At Age UK Mid Merseywe are committed to ensuring that thoseover 50 who wish to step into a digitalworld can do so with confidence andwith the right digital skills.Over the last six months we havesuccessfully secured funding from Age UKNational for all of our four boroughs, andfrom the Liverpool City Region SharedProsperity Fund for Halton and St Helens. This funding has also enabled us topurchase a range of digital equipment(laptops, tablets and smartphones) whichis available to use at our office bases inRuncorn and St Helens – all with thesupport of our Digital Volunteers. Older people in Mid Mersey shared similarstruggles with us following last year’schanges to the Winter Fuel Payment:“I have cut back on everything. Life is not worth living anymore”“I only survive on my statepenson”“I regularly use my savings foreveryday costs”The Hidden Cost of ColdThe Impact of Rising Living Costs on Older PeopleHigher living costs have hit every UKhousehold but older people living on alow or modest fixed income have foundit especially difficult, particularly risingenergy bills. Anecdotally we know many older peopleare cutting back on essentials, plus a fewother things that help to make life a bitmore enjoyable and manageable, eg:-telephone, broadband, insurance. In January 2025, Age UK (National)commissioned Opinium to help betterunderstand how people across the UKaged 66 or over (ie:- state pension age) arecoping with the cost of living, andparticularly the cost of energy - a few ofthe key facts and findings were:1 in 6 (1.9 million) pensioners live inpoverty*1 in 3 (34% - equivalent to 4.1 million)felt less financially secure in 2025compared to the same time a yearago.Nearly half (48% - equivalent to 5.8million) were worried about being ableto heat their home.44% (equivalent to 5.4 million) wereworried about the impact of energyprices on their health.2.9 million pensioners have cut back on heatinguse to avoid getting into energy debtfrom keeping their house warm 16

Page 27

Taking Action Together: Nationallyand LocallyAge UK are lobbying Government toprovide more support to help older peoplehave confidence to use their heating whentemperatures get colder, especially thoseon low to modest incomes. We are doingour bit in Mid Mersey too – hosting a Teawith Your MP event giving local olderpeople the opportunity to ask questionsand share their views; completing 75home energy checks and distributing asimilar amount of winter warm bags;helping with boiler replacement andworking with local Councils to distributevitamin D vouchers. Our Living Well Information and AdviceService provides essential help withnavigating the benefit system – what’savailable, entitlement and how to apply(with a helping hand if needed as theforms can be quite overwhelming).Receiving the right Government supportthrough successful benefit claims can helpto reduce the impact of rising costs.Do you know what benefits you maybe entitled to?Age UK’s Benefit Calculator quickly andeasily helps you find out what you couldbe claiming. Cowley International College a case studyCowley International College, St Helens have invited members of our SocialGroups for ‘Christmas Afternoon Tea and Carols’ for a number of years. It has veryquickly become the ‘must-go-to event’ for our older adult service users! Manycurrent and past members of our St Helens Men’s and Billinge Dementia FriendlyCoffee and Chat Groups have made the short trip, sometimes with their partner orfamily member, and enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and Christmas tunesprepared, served and sung by some of the Year 10 pupils (helped by teachers andother staff) – quite a few of our clients have been lucky to attend more than once! They look forward to this extra ‘annual’treat and really enjoy socialising andchatting with the pupils, listening to andsharing stories - as well as passing on tipson competitive card and dominoesplaying!!Some of our older adults have advanceddementia and limited verbalcommunication. We had more volunteersand staff available to support them duringtheir visit to Cowley International Collegethis time which worked well and added toeveryone’s enjoyment of the event, including family members. The hustle andbustle of the school and groups of childrenmoving about can increase the anxiety ofsomeone with dementia. I look forward to thisevent every year, thechildren are very talentedIn December 2024, 18 older adults, 4 orour Group Volunteers and 3 staff had a funafternoon chatting to pupils and staff atCowley International College, listening to(and singing along!) to Christmas Carolswhile enjoying some tasty savoury andsweet treats prepared and served by thepupils. Many of our older adults join ourGroups due to loneliness and feelingisolated and it is great to see themforming new friendships and connections. 23

Someof the pupils gave out song sheets toGroup members on arrival and led a sing-along while we waited for everyone toarrive!Overall, our 2024 Christmas Afternoon Teawas a great success and all our olderadults, volunteers and staff enjoyed alovely afternoon singing and chatting withthe school pupils and teaching staff. Therewere lots of happy faces! The school pupilsgave a gift to all of our older adults whenleaving which was a really thoughtful andlovely way to end a great afternoon. “The staff and children at CowleyInternational College put in a lot of effort tomake this an enjoyable and successfulafternoon for our clients. It is heart-warming to be involved in an event like thiswhere children and older people interactclosely – both groups clearly get lots out ofthe event”Next Steps...A similar event for Christmas 2025! We arealso discussing with Cowley InternationalCollege other opportunities for the pupilsand our older adults to more regularlyengage.
