This weeklong celebration highlighting the latest innovations innuclear science and technology is mandated under PresidentialProclamation No. 1211 in 1973 which declared December 7 to 15,and the second week of every year, as Atomic Energy Week (AEW).It was part of the government’s efforts to generate awareness ofthe Filipino people on the beneficial uses of nuclear science andtechnology (NST).In the said proclamation, the government noted the extraordinaryadvances in science and technology due to the use of atomicenergy as a “versatile tool in research and development.” Theproclamation also noted that nuclear energy is a “major source ofpower,” thus there was a need to push atomic energy developmentin the country as a vital factor in nation building. The Proclamation directed the then Philippine Atomic EnergyCommission (PAEC), now the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute(PNRI), which is tasked to promote and advance the beneficial usesof atomic energy in the Philippines, to undertake activities for theAEW.
Renato U.Solidum Jr., PhDSecretary, Department of Science and TechnologyIt is with great pride and gratitude that I greeteveryone participating in the 52ⁿᵈ Atomic EnergyWeek (AEW), hosted by the Department ofScience and Technology - Philippine NuclearResearch Institute (DOST-PNRI).The Philippines perseveres in its commitmentsunder the United Nations SustainableDevelopment Goals. Hence, nuclear science, technology, and innovation have a growing role inaddressing food security, disaster preparedness, and plastic pollution, among others. Its contributions to agriculture, health, andindustry, along with the recent proposed inclusionof nuclear power in the energy mix, help uscontinue to build on the Four Pillars of DOST–promoting the general well-being of Filipinos, ensuring sustainability, facilitating the creation ofwealth through science, technology, andinnovation, and equally important, preserving andprotecting the same wealth and our risingeconomy. To this end, the DOST once again expresses itssupport to the PNRI in hosting this Atomic EnergyWeek, showcasing the culmination of this year’sprogress in nuclear science and its applications. These accomplishments are further reflected inthe Institute’s prolific streak of outputs in reputedinternational publications – recently recognizedonce again as having the highest number amongDOST agencies in our Intellectual Property Awardsfor 2024 – as well as the increasing number ofR&D activities of its Career Scientists and talentedresearchers. It is incumbent upon our Research andDevelopment Institutes to bring these benefitscloser to the Filipino public, which is the entirepoint of this week’s celebration.Particularly notable is the theme for this year,“Gen-Atom: Fueling a Nuclear Philippines,” whichhas a special touch of reaching out to Gen-Zs andyounger individuals, while also being welcoming toall ages. Whatever our generation, we can all beGen-Atom, helping to fuel the country’s nationaldevelopment. My congratulations in advance to the DOST-PNRIfor a successful 52 AEW. Know that your DOSTfamily supports these initiatives all the way, in thespirit of “One DOST For You!”Mabuhay ang DOST-PNRI!nd252ⁿᵈ ATOMIC ENERGY WEEK
Carlo A. Arcilla, PhDDirector, Philippine Nuclear Research InstituteAs we mark the 52ⁿᵈ celebration of Atomic EnergyWeek (AEW) from December 9 to 13, 2024, I amhonored to address you during this significant event, highlighting the theme "Gen-Atom: Fueling a NuclearPhilippines." This week underscores the crucial role ofnuclear science and technology in advancing nationaldevelopment, while also spotlighting the promisingfuture of nuclear energy in our country's energy mix. In recent years, the Philippines has taken bold stridestowards integrating nuclear energy into our energypolicy. The issuance of Executive Order No. 164 in2022 was a historic step in recognizing nuclear poweras a sustainable, safe, and reliable energy source forthe country. This vision is further reflected in thePhilippine Energy Plan 2023-2050, which explicitlyincludes nuclear energy as a cornerstone for ourfuture energy security. The potential of nuclear powerto meet the growing energy demands of thePhilippines while ensuring low carbon emissions andenvironmental sustainability cannot be overstated. Asa lead member of the Nuclear Energy Program-Interagency Committee (NEP-IAC), the Department ofScience and Technology - Philippine Nuclear ResearchInstitute (DOST-PNRI) continues to work diligentlywith our government and private partners toimplement the country's nuclear energy program. The 52ⁿᵈ AEW serves as a platform to showcase thelatest advancements in nuclear science and radiation-related innovations. From nuclear power to itsapplications in agriculture, health, environment, foodsafety, and industry, AEW offers a unique opportunityfor all sectors to engage in insightful discussionsabout how nuclear science can contribute to thenation's development. We are also excited to feature technical sessions ledby esteemed scientists and researchers from DOST-PNRI, highlighting cutting-edge work in several fields, including food authenticity and traceability ofPhilippine Mango, nuclear techniques in air qualitymonitoring, recent trends in nuclear medicine, andradioactive waste management. Additionally, I encourage students to take part in theposter-making contest, which aims to inspire highschool students to creatively represent the beneficialuses of nuclear science and technology for thePhilippines through their art. The open-house tours ofour facilities will provide a hands-on learningexperience, featuring key sites such as PRR1-SATER,the multipurpose gamma irradiation facility building, the radioisotope laboratory, the radiation protectionservices building, and the environmental radioactivitylaboratory. Furthermore, I am pleased to announce theparticipation of Mr. Mohammad Nur Casib, the first-ever International Nuclear Science Olympiad Winnerand IAEA Nuclear Youth Ambassador, who will sharehis journey and insights during a special career talk. The International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO)aims to raise awareness of nuclear science's peacefulapplications, popularize knowledge, and motivatestudents to pursue careers in this field. Together, let us continue building a future wherenuclear technology contributes significantly to thePhilippines' growth and prosperity. Happy Atomic Energy Week! 352ⁿᵈ ATOMIC ENERGY WEEK
Vallerie Ann I.Samson, PhDDeputy Director, Philippine Nuclear Research InstituteToday marks an exciting occasion as wecelebrate the remarkable developments wehave seen for nuclear science andtechnology over the past years. To ouresteemed guests, colleagues, and the entireDOST-PNRI family, I am delighted towelcome you to the 52ⁿᵈ Atomic EnergyWeek. It is indeed timely that this year’s themereflects our institute’s enduring commitmentto harnessing the power of nuclear energyfor future generations.
