It’s January in Minnesota, and you’re either out making the most of winter activities or you’re hunkered down awaiting the promise of spring. Either way, it’s a great time to look through your Community Education catalog. As you take in all these opportunities to learn with your “neighbors” in the broadest sense, I encourage you to think about these experiences as a drug everyone should take. It seems odd for me to say that, here in the “med city,” but experts agree that learning is one of the most valuable things you can do for your brain and your wellbeing. And learning in a social setting, full of human connection and healthy emotions, lights up our brain in fabulous ways. I’m reading a book right now by Jennifer Anne Hawkins called Brain Plasticity and Learning: Implications for Education, where she lays out the brain’s ability to learn and change to respond to our needs. It’s amazing to see all we have learned about the role of learning and emotions in keeping our minds in shape. Her work and that of many others agree that continuing to learn throughout life is central to our wellbeing. From our youth in schools to our aging seniors, and everyone in between, learning really is the key to life. I hope you nd something that lights your light among these opportunities. Do something for your brain today and learn something new!–Amy Eich, Community Education Executive DirectorCommunity Education offers a wide range of classes specically designed for adults with developmental disabilities. In 1841, in southern Wisconsin, Laugen and a friend strapped on wooden skis in Rock Prairie and set off across the snow-covered grass to buy our. Laugen’s ski tracks troubled his American neighbors, who concluded that an unknown monster roamed the prairie, transporting itself by mysterious and terrible means. And so began the course of skiing in America, introduced to the nation by Norwegian immigrants to the Upper Midwest. “Winter’s Children” chronicles the rise of ski jumping as a popular, mainstream sport up until World War II. For a time, southeastern Minnesota was home to a thriving jumping scene, with the country’s strongest club in Red Wing, and ski jumps and clubs in towns like Lanesboro, Northeld, Zumbrota, and Rushford. After the war, the new sport of downhill skiing overshadowed jumping, but, starting in the 1960s, Americans became interested in cross-country skiing, which was previously an obscure pursuit practiced by few. Told through the triumphs and tragedies of the region’s great ski boosters and athletes, “Winter’s Children” celebrates the heritage of skiing while elegizing the sport’s uncertain future in the face of climate change. Kitty Latane shaped her rst cookie cutter out of an empty tin can formed into a bluebird with pliers when she was ten years old. She started working with tinplate as a business after she married Tom and found herself surrounded by metalworking tools. She learned a few basic skills and has made hundreds of cookie cutters since then. When she took classes in tinwork with Bill McMillen at Easteld Village near Albany, NY she began to make bigger, more complex projects.Punched Tin Lanterns Make your own punched tin lantern. Use a traditional punching pattern, or design your own. Pierced tin lanterns like this were common in Europe and the Americas from the 14th to the 19th centuries. They protect candles from the wind on shipboard and in barnyards, and the piercings provide charming twinkling light patterns. In this class students will cut pattern pieces from tinplate, punch the pieces with the pattern of their choice, and fold, join and solder to complete lanterns. It is this “life force” or chi (pronounced chee) that the artist aspires to capture and express through brush painting. Unlike European-trained artists, those trained in traditional Chinese brush painting techniques do not try to create a realistic rendering of the external appearance of a subject, but instead seek to capture its inner spirit. The essence of the subject is retained in the artist’s imagination, and it is this image that is painted in a moment of spontaneous inspiration. It is thought to prevent dementia, promote longevity and good health. Catherine Park began yoga more than 30 years ago.
