Happy New Year!January is a time of new beginnings, change, and exploration. I’ve got some big goals for 2024, and I hope you do as well. One of those goals is serving in a new role - I am thrilled to be the new Adult Enrichment Coordinator for Community Education.I am a Rochester native and a frequent Community Education participant. Adult Enrichment courses have helped me to forge new friendships, discover new hobbies, and truly enrich my life. My professional background in education began as a high school mathematics teacher, and I’m excited to transition into working with adults. I am passionate about continuous learning in adulthood. I am also an avid reader. In my free time, I take drum lessons, sing with Zumbro Valley Chorus, and volunteer at Rochester Public Library.Community Education can help you connect with others and add joy to your life. You will likely gain some new skills, too! I encourage you to check out our offerings for 2024. I’m eager to serve the Rochester community in this new capacity, and look forward to connecting with you.KiyaKiya Virgin

EVERYONECONNECTSWINTER/SPRING 2024 Adult Enrichment | 507-328-4000 | www.rochesterce.org/register10QUARRY HILL NATURE CENTERBy Lori Forstie, QHNC Public Relations & Outreach Coordinator50 years ago, nature centers and environment education organizations were popping up all over the country. Pioneers like Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson and John Muir, were strong voices urging the importance of conserving land for future generations and immersing children in the natural world. ey understood that natural spaces provide learning opportunities, support wellbeing and create a mutual respect for the environment. It was at that time that Quarry Hill Nature Center came onto the scene. e vision of one Rochester Public Schools teacher, Harry Buck, who believed it was essential that we provide education for students in the very environment we are teaching them to respect and preserve. Harry, too, was a pioneer, spearheading community support for a new way of thinking about science education. e community backed his vision, the nature center was built through volunteer support and donations, and was dedicated to the children of Rochester in May of 1973.Today, Quarry Hill Nature Center is a thriving hub for learning and outdoor recreation. Once operated solely by Rochester Public Schools, it is now operated by a non-prot organization which employs 13 professional teachers, naturalists and support sta. Nearly 170,000 visit yearly and more than 38,000 participate in programs, camps and community events. In all seasons, visitors are welcome in the public Exploration Hall where more than 35 species of Minnesota-native animals provide an ever-changing experience and our sta are available to answer all your nature curiosities. ere is something for all ages, and there is never an admission fee.Once part of the Rochester State Hospital grounds, remnants of a working quarry and a thriving agriculture operation can be found in the park. History bus will enjoy our guided Historic Hike oered in this catalog or a Historic Cave Tour oered twice monthly throughout the year at QHNC.org.During the winter, more than 8 miles of cross country ski trails are groomed and ski rentals are available daily. Get an introduction to snowshoeing through our class oered in this catalog, or rent a pair and set out to explore o the beaten path.is past year was the Nature Center’s 50th Anniversary. We heard stories of how Quarry Hill programs inspired students to pursue careers in science elds, we welcomed the next generation of kids to camp, and almost daily answered the question “I’ve never been here before, what can I do?” Guided by those early pioneers, we are steadfast in our mission of “opening eyes and minds through natural science discovery.” Whether you are a regular visitor or a one-time visitor to our community, Quarry Hill Nature Center welcomes you to learn, explore and connect in the outdoors.

It had a classroom on each oor, with the higher grades on the second oor and the lower grades on the rst oor. On the evening of August 21, 1883, the school was leveled by a historic tornado that devastated most of Lower Town. In 1913, the bent and battered brass key to the front door of the original school was discovered while excavating for a new sewer pipe. A newspaper article stated, ‘e building was reduced to a mass of kindling by the storm, and the key was hurled in a northeasterly direction, where it lay beneath debris and successive gradings for thirty years.’e school was resurrected and reopened in 1884. e new building was two stories high with two rooms on each oor. e front tower was much lower than the rst school, and the building was larger. e old foundation walls of the south, east, and west sides were used in the new construction, but the north wall was moved out to increase its size. In 1890, a bell with a 24-inch diameter and weighing 300 pounds was purchased. On February 10, 1910, a re began due to the thawing of frozen water pipes using a blow pot. All the children made it out safely into the -30 degree weather, even without their coats. Incredibly, the school reopened just two weeks later. is building stood until 1915 when a new school was built. In 1917, the old building was disassembled, and the lumber was used to construct several other homes that still stand today.Outgrowing its space, a new Northrop School was once again reborn at its current location just west of “Goose Egg” Park. e three-story school, constructed in 1915, was built with brick and featured terra-cotta trim, including a terra-cotta sculptural plaque above the original entrance. At that time, it was one of the nest grade schools in Minnesota, characterized by its reproof design and incorporation of the latest ideas in schoolhouse construction.Various additions and remodels have taken place over the years, with a gym added to the north side in 1936 and a three-story addition to the south side Chef Jen Welper– “From Farm to Table”

= Military Discount = Senior Discount = FREE Course = Online Course 21Heid’s HOMESTEADBy Heidi Kass, Co-Founder of the Rochester Seed LibraryWill you be planting radishes in your garden this spring? Radishes can be planted before the last frost and will produce a red, crunchy mouthful in just a few weeks, satisfying our urge for a harvest when other garden plants are just beginning to grow. Radishes add a colorful touch and spicy avor to salads, and they are a sign that the gardening season is underway! One radish seed produces one small radish, and once it’s picked, that plant is done. For that reason, radishes are often succession planted, meaning that a new row of radishes is planted every week or two during the cooler early summer to ensure that the radish harvest is extended as long as possible. ere is, however, another way to achieve a longer harvest from your radish plants, a method that can produce ten times as much food and also provide other benets in the garden. All it requires is a little neglect on your part. Let me explain. If spring radishes aren’t harvested when they normally would be and are left to keep growing, their roots will become woody (inedible), and they will grow a tall stem. Eventually, small four-petaled owers will develop and bloom. e blossoms range in color from white to pink to shades of purple, depending on the variety. ese blossoms are an excellent source of pollen and nectar for benecial insects in your garden. As each blossom fades, a green pod grows in its place. A single radish plant will produce many owers and pods over the course of one growing season, and this is where that prolic harvest comes from. ese pods, when young and tender, are delicious! ey have a texture similar to a peapod and a taste that is milder than the radish root. ey are great for snacking and adding to summer salads. I actually enjoy the pods more than the red radish root, which can sometimes be overly spicy for my palate. But your radishes aren’t done providing benets for you yet! Any pods that you don’t pick and eat will gradually toughen and turn from green to tan when fully mature. ese pods hold the seeds for next year’s radish crop. Each pod generally contains one to ve seeds, and harvesting them is as easy as breaking them open (over a bowl) and separating the reddish-brown seeds from the corky pieces of the pod. One caution on saving your own radish seed or any other vegetable seed – make sure you are saving seeds from heirloom or open-pollinated varieties. Your seed packet should indicate that. If you’d like to know more on this topic, I explain open-pollinated vs. hybrid seeds and the impact on seed saving in my seed-saving classes oered through Community Education each spring and fall. is spring, if you’d like to grow your own radish owers, edible pods, and seeds, just plant radishes as you normally would, but leave about 5-10 radish plants of the same variety in the soil to keep growing. Plan ahead for them to be in the garden all summer long and put them in a location where they can grow with abandon. Alternatively, for a tidier appearance, you can contain their summer growth with stakes and twine. ~Joy i growing~Heidi’s Homestead

EVERYONECONNECTSWINTER/SPRING 2024 Adult Enrichment | 507-328-4000 | www.rochesterce.org/register22HOME ELECTRIFICATIONBy Jonny Yucuis, Founder of Rochester Electric Vehicles and Electrify RochesterMy name is Jonny Yucuis, and I’m a resident of the Rochester area. I am the founder of Rochester Electric Vehicles and Electrify Rochester. In 2023, my family completed the process of converting our vehicles, home appliances, and outdoor tools to all-electric solutions with the goal of reducing our personal emissions. Along the way, we’ve gained many insights that I’m happy to share with others looking to make the switch to electried solutions as well.Heat Pumps For Home HeatingOne aspect that felt particularly overwhelming in our electrication journey was converting our home heating and cooling to an all-electric heat pump system. It was challenging to nd a contractor willing to install one. Fortunately, I had friends who could oer guidance, helping me feel condent in replacing our old and failing gas furnace with an all-electric heat pump system. We’ve used a heat pump system through multiple harsh Minnesota winters and summers, enjoying a comfortable house year-round.Although the conversion process had its challenges, we are now enjoying the all-electric lifestyle, and I’ve gained a lot of rsthand insights that I’d love to share with you.I’d like to invite you to join me for my upcoming class, ‘Home Heating with Heat Pumps.’ (page 23) If your furnace is nearing the end of its lifespan and needs a replacement, or if you’re looking to heat and cool your home with fewer emissions, this class is designed for you.In this class, you’ll learn what you need to know about heating and cooling your home with an electric heat pump system from people who use them year-round in Rochester’s cold winters and hot summers. We’ll cover the basics of how heat pumps work, explore the options available today, discuss considerations for your specic situation, provide guidance on nding the right contractor, and outline what to expect after installation. We’ll also share rsthand insights and examples from myself and fellow Rochester area residents, and allocate plenty of time for questions. Discussing e Realities of Buying Electric VehiclesIf you’re considering making the switch to driving an electric vehicle, I’d also like to invite you to my other class, ‘Discussing e Realities of Buying Electric Vehicles.’ (page 23) In 2018, my family decided to transition to an electric vehicle. At the time, it was challenging to nd reliable information, and I didn’t have anyone I could turn to with questions. After experiencing the benets of driving electric rsthand, I wanted to help make the process easier for others. In 2019, I founded Rochester Electric Vehicles, an organization dedicated to assisting Rochester neighbors in making the switch to electric. In this class, we’ll keep things straightforward and cover everything you need to feel condent about driving on electrons. We’ll discuss vehicle options, understanding range, charging at home and while traveling, and more. I rmly believe that electried solutions for your home, vehicles, and more are practical solutions today. I’ve experienced the benets rsthand, and I’d love to have you join these classes to get your questions answered and to help you embark on your electrication journeySPACE–The Final Frontier

= Military Discount = Senior Discount = FREE Course = Online Course 29BECOMING NEW Little by Little, and Day by DayBy Paul Min, PhDMy passion for nding meaning in life has always been my driving source. However, there has always been a dierence between the passion in my heart and what I can do in action. When I was in perfect condition, I was able to practice what I thought. But my endurance was weak, so I often chose easy paths and avoided diculties rather than facing them. I was always searching for ways to sustain my passion eectively and eciently. erefore, I often felt that I knew a lot, but compared to that, my actual ability to act fell short. As if having shortness of breath, I lived my life inadequately, blaming the environment rather than trying to nd my center within. While seeking a harmonious and meaningful life, I encountered the Seokmun-Hoheup [suk-moon-ho-who(b)] breathing practice, which I continue to this day. roughout my 20 years of breathing practice, the most noticeable changes have been the alignment of my thoughts with my actions, a closer congruence between my words and deeds, and greater consistency between my inner and outer self. As the pandemic receded, I realized the potential benet of sharing this breathing practice with those around me. Starting with friends and relatives, I began oering online training sessions, and now, over 30 people practice alongside me. In Korea, there are a few thousand people practicing Seokmun-Hoheup, and globally, we are just starting to have around 60 people participating. is led me to teach the ‘Healthy Breathing’ class at Rochester Community Education. When I close my eyes and focus on the ‘Seokmun’ point at the lower belly, I become aware of my current physical, mental, and spiritual state. Gradually, a balance between inhalation and exhalation forms, fostering deep communication between my inner passion and outer actions. By recognizing the value of these small, simple breaths taken every few seconds, I start to understand the importance of small, manageable practices that can easily change my daily life physically, mentally, and spiritually. I am grateful that in my daily life, I have developed the bright habit of doing short breathing exercises each day. I acknowledge that every breath is a new start and that I am slowly brightening, little by little. As I begin to nd this brightness within me and as my breathing becomes calmer and deeper, I start to see the Bright Light in Everyone around me. As I begin to recognize and understand my breathing, little by little, and day by day, I discover new aspects of myself.e breath to nd one’s true self, that’s Seokmun-Hoheup.*Check out Paul’s class “Healthy Breathing” (page 28) Healthy breathing is essential for our overall well-being; however, improving our ingrained breathing habits can be challenging, as they reect our current state of Body, Mind, and Spirit. Instead of short-term conscious breathing techniques, we teach you how to naturally transition to lower belly diaphragmatic breathing, which can be reected in your everyday life.Dr. Paul Min, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in radiology and a neuroscientist at Mayo Clinic. At the age of 25, he met the Seokmun-Hoheup breathing practice while searching for practical methods to develop one’s true potential. He also studies how breathing affects brain health related to oxygen/energy delivery and waste removal in the brain.
