AALA/TEAMSTERS LOCAL 20102WE ARE NOT BARGAINING AGAINST OURSELVESEsteemed AALA/Teamsters Brothers and Sisters,I write you with a heavy heart and deep disappointment over the District’s response to the proposals presented to them at our first Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) meeting for Certificated members held on March 5, 2025. Regrettably, at the March 19, 2025, bargaining session, the District showed a complete lack of respect and disregard for the issues we brought forward. Despite our urgent proposals addressing unsustainable working conditions, overwhelming workloads, and long hours, the District came to the table with no written proposals or counters. Instead, they chose to simply maintain the status quo contractual language across several key articles. Below are some of the articles we addressed:Article X: Duties, Responsibilities, and Hours (CBA pg. 37)Our AALA/Teamsters Local 2010 proposals are clear and necessary. We defined the reasonableness of working hours, highlighted the rigidity of flexible time, and emphasized how the current system fails to accommodate requests for adjusted hours between employees and their supervisors. We also proposed flexible time be used for preventive care, health, wellness, and any purpose at the discretion of the employee. What did the District offer in response? Nothing. Zero. Zilch. Is this how they show appreciation for our well-being? By offering absolutely nothing? Their response is administrators should simply devote the time necessary to “get the job done.” It is insulting. And it is clear: We are done hearing empty words like “thank you” and “we appreciate you,” when the District fails to show any actionable results or systemic change.Article IX: Administrative Assignments and Transfers (CBA pg. 30)We addressed the need to revisit the way assignments are handled. We proposed that priority be given to qualified employees for:• Returns from Leaves• Transfers (district-initiated or employee-initiated)• Reassignments (changes in position at the site)• Released School Support Administrators who should have return rights to principal or assistant principal positionsThese priorities would ensure employees affected by last year’s Reduction in Force, especially our Assistant Principals and APEISs (Transfers on file) could be assigned closer to home. Once again, the District’s response was to maintain the current contract language—no change, no solutions, and no support for our members.Article VI: AALA/Teamsters Rights (CBA pg. 13)We proposed the District provide monthly updates on employee information (such as new hires, transfers, and salary changes within our bargaining unit). This is crucial for effective membership outreach and new hire orientation. Additionally, we requested the ability to attend meetings where Union members gather—such as Regional or Principal/Assistant Principal NOWNOT BARGAINING – PAGE 3
NEWSLETTER3KNOW YOUR CONTRACT & KNOW YOUR UNION RIGHTS!meetings—to provide updates and share announcements. The District dismissed these requests, showing a blatant disregard for our collective concerns and our right to be informed. Is this the treatment UTLA receives? I believe UTLA chapter chairs are given 10-15 minutes to speak directly with their members. Article IV, Section 8.0, i. gives the Chapter Chair the right to make appropriate brief announcements within the first 45 minutes of such meetings or at least 15 minutes prior to the end. Why are we not afforded the same courtesy? When we asked the District directly whether they recognized the serious concerns raised by our members—evidenced by surveys, emails, texts, and phone calls—they avoided the question completely. This lack of response is both frustrating and disheartening. So, Brothers and Sisters, I ask you: How do you feel about this disregard and disrespect from the District? What actions are you willing to take to stand together and voice your outrage at this injustice? Over the coming weeks, we will be engaging with our members through surveys and discussing next steps. I urge you all to stay connected, engaged, and informed. The District’s refusal to listen to us only strengthens our resolve.Let me say this as clearly as I can: When the District says “No,” it is when we get to work even more. We will not settle. We will not be silenced. We will not give up. We will continue to advocate, fight, and stand in solidarity. Together, we will make sure our collective voice is heard. We will take whatever actions are necessary to secure the change we deserve—the professional respect we have earned and the long overdue and humane treatment we deserve.LAUSD, you need to do BETTER!In solidarity and Unwavering Resolve,MariaThe association and the district have for years agreed to prudently save money and assuage anxiety by not sending the infamous March 15th letters to school-based administrators with permanency.Typically, Human Resources contacts the association yearly to confirm the past practice. This year, for whatever reason, Human Resources did an about face and sent it to every AALA administrator without the courtesy of giving President Nichols a heads-up.This has caused undue stress for school-based administrators(permanency) and a stab to their “joy and wellness” hearts. AALA/Teamsters Local 2010 and its channels of communication lit up like Christmas trees when the letters hit mailboxes. As usual, the district’s timing was impeccable and timed it so the letters arrived on a SATURDAY.Besides the further burning of human capital and good will, the estimated cost of sending the letters to all members is a WHOPPING $28,000 in postage fees alone. Add the cost of materials, copying, and staff time and the price tag becomes even more obscene.President Nichols made a morning call followed by an email to Labor Relations and Human Resources on Monday, March 17, 2025. The request was simple. Why was the THE IDES OF MARCH 15TH LETTERSassociation not informed as in the past? What was the rationale for sending the letter to every member? What is the number of potentially impacted members and their classifications for both certificated and classified members? As of this writing there has been no response. Perhaps in addition to modeling decreasing transparency and communication, the district is saying it is copacetic to respond to emails forty (40) hours or more after receipt. Imagine having the luxury of responding to your emails forty (40) or more hours later! We demand a response from the district and to share their answers with you. In the meantime, you are in good company. President Nichols received a letter too. She plans on sticking around to represent YOU and continue SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER!NOT BARGAININGFROM PAGE 2
