AALA/TEAMSTERS LOCAL 20102A UNIFIED VOICE FOR JUSTICE: OUR COLLECTIVE BARGAINING JOURNEY BEGINSDear AALA/Teamsters Brothers and Sisters,Since taking office on July 1, 2024, I have focused on servant leadership, advocacy, and doing what is right because it is the right thing to do. Everything we have done as AALA/Teamsters members has been rooted in our shared belief that we deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We are fighting for better working conditions, manageable workloads, and sustainable hours. Simply put, we deserve better, and LAUSD must do better! Our certificated workers are the backbone of this district, and our classified workers are the heartbeat. Together, we ensure that this district runs effectively and efficiently. Without either group, the district cannot function. We have been preparing for Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations with LAUSD. Our goal is simple: to secure a fair, equitable, and just contract. We are working to bring back joy, work-life balance, and family stability so we can show up every day with our best selves, ready to give our all to the work we do.On March 5, 2025, we began negotiations with LAUSD, representing both certificated and classified members. With us at the table were Jason Rabinowitz, Secretary-Treasurer and Labor Lawyer, and Alex Vermie, Research Analyst from Teamsters Local 2010, as well as our AALA Certificated and Classified CBA Team, which consists of the following:Certificated CBA Team:• Elsa Madrid, Vice President, Adult Department• Dr. Ayanna Davis, Vice President, Early Education Department• Manuel Nava, Vice President, Elementary Department• Melissa Ornelas, Vice President, Secondary Department• Titus Campos, Vice President, School Support AdministratorClassified CBA Team:• Lisa Marine, Vice President• Lionel Barreda, Director• Jennifer Clemente, Director• Alfred Sixto, Job StewardFor Certificated members, we proposed key changes to:• Article X: Duties, Responsibilities, and Hours• Article VI: AALA/Teamsters Local 2010 Rights• Article IX: Administrative Assignments and TransfersFor Classified members, we proposed:• Article IX: Work Hours• Article IV: AALA/Teamsters Rights• Article XXI: Job StewardsThese proposals reflect the feedback we have received from you—your concerns, needs, and ideas. Your voices matter, and I want you to know that we hear you!We are now waiting for LAUSD’s counterproposals, with our next meeting scheduled for March 19, 2025. I promise we will never settle for anything less than what is fair, just, and right. We will continue to fight for the respect and recognition we deserve. I will keep COLLECTIVE BARGAINING – PAGE 3

NEWSLETTER3Maria Nichols, leader of the principals union for the Los Angeles Unified School District, likes to show up for contract negotiations well-prepared. Less than a year into her role as president of the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles, the former community schools administrator in December moved to officially affiliate her union with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Nichols said the move was aimed at strengthening the AALA’s bargaining power ahead of its contract negotiations with LAUSD this spring. AALA is the official bargaining unit for middle-level administrators in LAUSD, including the district’s elementary and secondary principals. Nichols said each day her members face rising workloads, budget cuts, and threats to their safety. As a four-decade veteran of LAUSD, she knows those issues first hand. “For me, it’s about changing a system,” Nichols said of working with the district. “Because the people are not the problem.”Perhaps it’s respect for the system that’s led Nichols to join the AALA with the Teamsters. She said the district has already made concessions to the AALA since the change. Read More...Last week LA School Report published an interview with AALA/Teamsters Local 2010 President Maria Nichols. You can read the article in its entirety HERE.Q&A: LA’S NEW PRINCIPAL UNION PRESIDENT SAYS HER MEMBERS ARE OVERWORKEDyou updated on our progress through our newsletter, social media, website, and text messaging. If you are not receiving text messages, please contact me directly at (818) 399-2422 with your name and employee number, and I will ensure you are added to our system. Moreover, several of our Executive Board Representatives are participating in training to strengthen our union. In February, we attended the Western Region Internal Organizing Summit in Oakland, where we joined Teamsters Local 2010 to present ourselves as one united voice. These opportunities are helping us develop new strategies to improve our collective knowledge and build power in the public sector. On March 6-7, 2025, a group of us attended Stewards Training in the City of Commerce, focusing on Union stewardship, contract language, the grievance process, and leadership capacity. This training is critical as we continue to engage in active participation in CBA negotiations with LAUSD.But let me be clear—this fight is far from over. Every single one of us has a part to play in this movement. We will not back down, we will not settle, and we will not let LAUSD ignore the dignity, respect, and fair treatment that every one of us deserves. Together, we are powerful. Together, we will win. We will secure the contract we deserve, and we will build a future where every member of this union can thrive. Stand strong. Stay united. The fight is on, and we will not stop until justice is done!In Solidarity and Unwavering Resolve,MariaAALA/Teamsters Local 2010 PresidentCOLLECTIVE BARGAININGFROM PAGE 2

The number and type of bacteria species can vary depending on the yogurt brand. The probiotic content of yogurt products can range from 90 billion to 500 billion CFU per serving. (CFU stands for colony-forming units, which is how many bacteria divide and form colonies.) Look for the words “live and active cultures” on the label. It’s easy to add yogurt to your diet. Besides having it for breakfast or a midday snack, you can substitute yogurt whenever you use mayonnaise in egg salad or potato salad, or in almost any baking recipe. Yogurt also can be the basis for sauces, salad dressings, or marinades. How many probiotic foods do you need? That’s not easy to answer, as there is no recommended daily intake for probiotics, so there is no way to know exactly which fermented foods or what quantity is best. Therefore, the general guideline is to just add as many fermented foods to your daily diet as possible.

AALA/TEAMSTERS LOCAL 201012The following information is courtesy of Harvard Medical School Staying Healthy blog. Our gut does more than digest food — it’s a powerhouse for overall health, from boosting immunity to supporting mental well-being. Probiotics, the “good” bacteria in our systems, play a key role in maintaining this balance and are essential for keeping your body and mind thriving. There are two ways to get more good bacteria into your gut: fermented foods and dietary supplements. Probiotic supplements, which are typically sold over the counter, are reserved to treat specific ailments as suggested by your doctor. They are not recommended for everyday use. Plus, supple ments do not have the same FDA oversight as medications do.Fermented foods, on the other hand, are an excellent natural source of probiotics. Fermenting is one of the oldest techniques for food preservation. Foods that are fermented go through a process of lactofermentation in which natural bacteria feed on the sugar and starch in the food, creating lactic acid. This process creates an environment that preserves the food and promotes beneficial enzymes, B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as various species of good bacteria. Think all bacteria are bad for you? Think again! There’s a special type of bacteria called probiotics, which may give your health and wellbeing a major boostAnother way to look at fermentation is that it takes one type of food and transforms it into another kind. For instance, cabbage becomes sauerkraut, cucumbers become pickles, soybeans turn into miso, and milk can be made into yogurt, cheeses, and sour cream. Not all fermented foods contain probiotics. Some foods undergo steps that remove the probiotics, as with beer or wine, or make them inactive, like baking and canning. However, most fermented foods are probiotic foods as well.If there is a potential downside to fermented foods, it is that their taste and smell can be quite strong, which may be unpleasant for HEALTHCARE FAQS: PROBIOTICSsome people. The unique flavors and textures of fermented foods are due in part to the different species of bacteria used.On the upside, there are many types of fermented foods from which to choose, so there is a good chance you can find something you will enjoy.Good probiotic food choicesThe most common fermented foods that naturally contain probiotics, or have probiotics added to them, include yogurt, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, pickles, miso, tempeh, kimchi, sourdough bread, and some cheeses.PROBIOTICS– PAGE 10
