Introducing our Trustees Julie Griffith In September we welcomed new Trustee Julie to The Heritage Trust Julie has been caring for historic objects and interiors for over ten years and is currently a House and Collections Manager with the National Trust She is passionate about how historic buildings and their contents have a positive impact on people s lives and enjoys exploring new and innovative ways of engaging people with historic spaces their collections history and stories To get to know Julie we asked her some questions What led you to become a Trustee I ve always enjoyed volunteering for heritage sites and feeling like I am contributing something worthwhile both for the place and the people who use it I started volunteering as a teenager and all through university but when I started working full time I found it difficult to find a voluntary role that I could commit to When I discovered the trustee opportunity with The Heritage Trust I found that it was something I could fit around my work and still feel like I m making a difference What inspires you about volunteering with The Heritage Trust Definitely the thought that together we can help to give forgotten or neglected buildings the next chapter in their life These are places that meant something to the people who lived worked or socialised in them They have been a part of the local landscape character and community for many years bringing people together in one form or another It s a great feeling to be able to continue this connection between historic buildings local communities and businesses into the future What is your favourite heritage site and why My favourite heritage site is Tamworth Castle in Tamworth Staffordshire I grew up in the town and have always been interested in history so for me this incredible building that I walked past almost every single day was a source of fascination As soon as I was old enough I began volunteering there in my spare time The castle holds a lot of memories for me and is the place that ignited my desire to work within heritage as a career What do you do when you re not working I ve recently started going indoor climbing and I absolutely love it It s a great form of exercise but it also involves solving puzzles as you try to work out how to complete the climb One of the best things about it is the climbing centre that I go to is in a converted church a great example of finding a financially sustainable use for a historic building Make a difference become a Trustee Would you like join us and help to make difference to the buildings at risk in Derbyshire We currently have a further vacant position for another trustee to complete our governing body Being a trustee is an exciting and rewarding role that will enable you to contribute towards the work of the Trust whilst offering the opportunity of gaining hands on experience alongside other volunteers To find out more at www theheritagetrust org uk vacancies or contact us by email admin heritagetrust org uk Heritage Today 3
