YOURS MAGAZINE The end of 2019 is fast approaching and what a fantastic year it has been for our club with much achieved during the year I am sure Members would also be pleased with the Financial Report which was approved by Members at the Annual General Meeting in October Your Board continues to focus on responsible financial management high standards of corporate governance accountability and due diligence to secure the club s long term future YEAR IN REVIEW DOOLEYS commitment to our local community and beyond continued throughout the year with great support of our Catholic Universities where I recently presented 10 Undergraduates Bursaries and 1 Postgraduate Bursary to some very appreciative students at the 2019 Scholarship Prize and Award Lunch held at the Strathfield Campus of ACU The Chancellor John Fahey in his address acknowledged the great support that DOOLEYS has given to the Bursary Program over the years FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN Hello Members Welcome to the Summer edition of YOURS I also recently attended the University of Notre Dame Broadway where I presented 4 Undergraduate Bursaries to students in various undergraduate courses This is the first time that DOOLEYS has participated in the Scholarship Program with the University and they were most appreciative and acknowledged our support on the day Our support for our local community is well documented where we develop and manage long term strategic community partnerships that provide maximum benefit to address identified community needs Members would also be aware that DOOLEYS held an Extraordinary General Meeting to determine if an amalgamation with Concord RSL Club would proceed Concord RSL members also agreed to proceed and we are now awaiting the outcome of the application to the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority for approval This is a wonderful opportunity for DOOLEYS to expand our brand into the Canada Bay Local Government Area LGA as approximately 8000 of our members live in that area As to date discussions are being held with the NSW RSL for occupancy of the site and if that is not achievable we will need to look for alternate locations in the LGA The Concourse at Lidcombe project has finally been resolved with development applications to be submitted to Council shortly and subject to approvals initial works to be commenced in the second half of 2020 This has been a long and difficult project however with great determination from the Board and Management a satisfactory outcome has been achieved which will ultimately provide Members with outstanding club facilities and the community an upgraded Town Centre Stage 1 will be a five year program delivering a significant increase of club facilities an expanded fitness centre over 500 additional car spaces and an Independent Seniors Living community Members deserve the best facilities available and this project will deliver on that As reported in the Spring edition of YOURS the Regents Park Club Development is ongoing due to design changes required by Cumberland Council The design team is working in conjunction with the quality surveyors to develop the site that suits all parties Once completed this project will be an invaluable asset for the club Members will be kept informed on progress via YOURS magazine UPCOMING EVENTS Members don t forget that there are two great Christmas raffles coming in December The Toy raffle on Sunday 1 December and the Seafood raffle on Sunday 22 December Also the very popular Ham and Turkey day will be held on Sunday 15 December Keep these days free and check out this edition of YOURS for further information on what s on offer in December Members do not forget our Annual Christmas Fair in support of The Children s Hospital at Westmead This great day will be held in Wyatt Park Lidcombe on Sunday 1 December Members and their families along with the wider community can enjoy Carnival Rides Entertainment Christmas Stalls prize giveaways and much more This is a wonderful opportunity for us all to support this great hospital and in particular the Cancer Centre for Children Santa will also be there to brighten up the faces of young and old alike All proceeds from stall hire amusement rides and raffles will also be donated to the Hospital As we move into the festive season DOOLEYS Lidcombe DOOLEYS Waterview and DOOLEYS your every need during your visit ELECTIONS 2019 At the Annual General Meeting held on 23 October the Returning Officer announced the result of the election for 2019 Under the Triennial rule there were two positions to be contested with three candidates nominating for the positions Current directors Anna Ryan and Margaret Croucher were successfully elected I congratulate them and thank Members for your endorsement of them Please be assured that they and the rest of the Board will be working for you in the coming years I thank Helen Hughes for her interest in contesting the election Another CLUB CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE We are now approaching the most joyous season of the year Christmas Wow It feels like we have just started the year and now we are ending it soon December is an important month in the Christian calendar ADVENT CANDLES We start the season of Christmas with Advent and in the Christian Catholic tradition we have the lighting of the Advent Wreath lighting one candle each week to signify our intense preparation for the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ Advent is a version of the Latin word meaning coming The four weeks of Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the Christmas day One interpretation is that these candles are the stages of salvation The first candle is for forgiveness the second is Faith of Abraham and the gift of the Promised Land the third is Joy of David and his covenant with God and finally the fourth candle symbolises the Teaching of Prophets who announced a reign of Justice and Peace A fifth white candle known as the Christ Candle is lit on Christmas Eve or Day ANNIVERSARY OF OUR PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL On 8 December we celebrate the 4th Anniversary of the establishment of our Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel It is a holy and quiet place of prayer open 24 7 hours a day It is an oasis of prayer in the inner west region and in fact the only one in the Archdiocese of Sydney In commemoration of the anniversary there will be a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament together with the statue of the Blessed Mother around the church vicinity after the 5 00PM Mass Everyone is most welcome to join PARISH CHRISTMAS GIFT GIVING AND CHRISTMAS PARTY The Parish will be holding a Gift Giving Day for children after the 10am Mass on the 8 December followed by Parish Christmas Lunch in the Parish Hall Every parishioner is invited for this Parish Christmas gathering It is a day of fun and food and will also include a jumping castle and face painting DAWN MASSES CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR 2020 The Parish of St Joachim will host nine days of Dawn Masses starting at 5 15am from Monday 16 December until Christmas Eve After Mass we gather for breakfast supplied by other parishioners and visitors are welcome to join Christmas Eve Mass will be at 7pm Christmas Carols at 11 00pm followed by a midnight Mass Christmas Day Mass will be at 8am 10am and 5pm On Sunday 5 January we have the Epiphany of the Lord celebrating the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ This commemorates the visit of the three Maji with their gifts of Gold Frankincense and Myrrh to the Christ Child and thus Jesus s physical manifestation to the Gentiles On 2 February we have The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem which was to officially induct him into Judaism According to the Gospel of Luke this occurred forty days after his birth to complete Mary s ritual purification after childbirth and to perform the Redemption of the firstborn son in obedience to the Torah May I wish all the Members Directors and Staff of DOOLEYS a Happy and Holy Christmas and a Grace filled New Year Fr Eduardo Orilla Club Chaplain DOOLEYS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE YOURS 9

e l p o e p r You CULINARY CHALLENGE 2019 T his past September a team of talented DOOLEYS Chefs entered the 2019 Australian Culinary Challenge held at the Sydney Convention Exhibition Centre as part of Fine Food Australia 2019 The team led by Executive Chef Paul Jury and Senior Sous Chef Dominic Lane also included Chefs Jingwen and Sam The Challenge is conducted by The Australian Culinary Federation the peak industry organisation representing professional Chefs Cooks Apprentices Culinary Students Chefs of the highest calibre and skill level were invited to showcase their talents in front of the Fine Food audience and were judged by a panel of international interstate and local judges The DOOLEYS team prepared a sophisticated menu that included a Porcini Scented Pork Scotch and a Chocolate Pistachio Dome The team impressed the judges on the day with their skill and technique plating up a delicious menu that was thoroughly enjoyed As a result of their efforts the DOOLEYS team was awarded the Bronze medal Congratulations to the team for this wonderful achievement 2019 NSW T TRAINING AWARDS he NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by Training Services NSW The awards honour and reward the achievements of students trainers training organisations large and medium employers This year DOOLEYS was chosen as one of three finalists in the Large Employer of the Year category going up against McDonalds and John Holland CPB Ghella DOOLEYS was recognised for its commitment to ongoing development through the Academy Pathway focusing on tailored internal onthe job training combined with accredited programs This is the cornerstone of our unique point of difference in an ongoing commitment to service excellence The NSW Training Awards Presentation event was held on 12 September at Sydney Town Hall and was attended by the DOOLEYS People Learning Team While we did not go away with the Award it was a tremendous achievement and recognition to be selected a finalist amongst some industry heavyweights INTERESTED IN WORKING AT DOOLE YS VISIT WWW DOOLEYS COM CAREERS TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR A REWARDING CAREER DOOLEYS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE YOURS 13

DOOLEYS WAR on plastic I n September 2018 the Australian Government together with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation APCO which comprises of major companies in packaging logistics manufacturing retail recycling and waste management banded together to announce their commitment to better waste management in packaging We have also changed over from white dinner napkins to raw unbleached ones at all our serving points This is because paper towels are usually bleached to give them their whiteness and swapping to unbleached products means we can also reduce the potential for harmful dioxins being formed through the use of chlorine derivatives The 2025 National Packaging Targets are In addition our takeaway packaging at John Street Caf has also been replaced with an alternative which also utilises raw unbleached paper and our plastic gelato cups are also scheduled to be replaced by a paper alternative in the coming months so keep an eye out next time when you are here at our Clubs 100 of all Australia s packaging will be reusable recyclable or compostable by 2025 or earlier 70 of Australia s plastic packaging will be recycled or composted by 2025 30 average recycled content will be included across all packaging by 2025 Problematic and unnecessary single use plastic packaging will be phased out through design innovation or introduction of alternatives Here at DOOLEYS you may have already noticed some changes to our packaging over the past year For example we have now stopped providing plastic straws and they have been replaced with a paper alternative which we are currently trialling DOOLEYS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE YOURS 27

DOOLEYS INTRA CLUBS SOCIAL FUN AND ACTIVE D OOLEYS offers a variety of sporting and leisure activities for Members to regularly meet for social competitions as well as to share common interests The Intra Clubs which organise and run competitions are Camera Club Regents Park Lawn Bowls Dancesport Mixed Indoor Bowls Euchre Mixed Shuffleboard Fishing Snooker Billiards Golf Table Tennis Ladies Indoor Bowls Ten Pin Bowling Ladies Shuffleboard Beside these socially competitive groups DOOLEYS have two highly organised and extremely popular social groups that cater for those who desire a more leisurely activity These groups are the Travel Club and the Walking Club Both these Intra Clubs have strong membership are well organised and have regular outings DOOLEYS also supports a Craft Knitting Group that meets every week at the Lidcombe Club which you are also welcome to join One thing that all these clubs have in common is that they welcome and encourage new members to join in the fun They are very friendly meet regularly and they cost little or nothing to join or participate in DOOLEYS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE YOURS 43
