Huntsman s Report 2018 by Rosslyn Balding Professional Huntsman TNYH W hat an amazing year it has been for me personally since I wrote last year s hunt report It has certainly been a season of rsts and one I won t forget in a hurry My last report HARK 2017 nished with me saying that it wouldn t be long until the fall season was underway and that was certainly true I had been extremely pleased with how the hounds had hunted so well together in the spring and was looking forward to building on that with the fall hunting They didn t disappoint me We had been working hard at the kennels getting horses and hounds t and started with a couple of gentle hound exercises for members at the kennels followed by some good early morning hunts at some of our popular xtures Our rst of the season was from Singhampton where they got amongst a coyote family group in the rst cover this can be problematic as they disperse however hounds were left alone to work it out and all got together on one and a fast hunt pursued I couldn t have been more pleased with them Another notable day was at Feversham where after some hard work hounds settled into a fast Hunt of seven miles where we joined in with a cycle race of some 3000 bikers much to the local community s amusement Maxwell gave us some great days this fall with a particularly long running coyote giving us several good chases on different days one of 10 miles We are indebted to our landowners everywhere and particularly Maxwell where they are always so welcoming thank you I have been very pleased with this year s young entry who have got to work straight away and are already bene ting the pack Photo by Cat Davey Huntsman Ros Balding Opening Meet and landowner s breakfast fell on the second Saturday in September It was my rst Opening Meet as Hunstman and my rst time wearing a red coat Not particularly traditional for a woman but then neither is my job I was very proud to wear it Opening Meet is always a somewhat nerve wracking occasion for a huntsman You want to do your best for your hounds Masters members and landowners so the pressure is on This year also had an added pressure as Andrew Barclay extremely experienced knowledgeable renowned retired Huntsman from the Green Spring Valley Hunt in Maryland had come to visit Andrew Barclay heads up the MFHA s Professional Development Programme PDP and I was extremely privileged to have been accepted into this year s programme Only six candidates are accepted each year Andrew s visit was part of the programme however it needn t have TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 7

HUNTSMAN S REPORT 2018 Continues been added pressure for me quite the opposite as Andrew was extremely supportive and a calming in uence on the day Having now completed the PDP I can say that it is an excellent course most comprehensive and worthwhile I would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone serious about a career in foxhunting It is the only quali cation that there is in the hunting world and the MFHA has had wonderful foresight to see its value in this day and age James programming GPS collars Photos by Cat Davey Scenting conditions weren t as good as they could ve been but hounds worked extremely hard and managed to push a coyote from the Fourth Line through some beautiful riding country north towards Creemore where they ran out of scent We had good attendance from our local landowners for the breakfast afterwards Everyone was in good spirits and the day nished off with a lovely atmosphere with a friendly crowd even if the weather was a little cool Laura Balding on Ellie Opening Meet tremendous days hunting in this area when all conditions meet to create superb scenting but there are also many days that are hard work for the hounds Our next big day on the xture card came shortly after the Opening Meet when we hosted the IUHH What an honour that was for us all as a club and me as a huntsman to say that I had hunted hounds for these people We had renowned huntsmen and Masters from the UK France New Zealand and the States The amount of knowledge and experience all together in one place was incredible the points on my resume were stacking up fast Photos by Cat Davey Teresa Robinson Professional Whipper in hot Jackets were excused and hope for good scenting was vanishing fast We were able to give a good show of our country but hounds although working hard were starting to feel the heat We climbed up to the cooler wooded gullies above the Fourth Line where hounds were able to open up on a fox who gave them a good if short run around before heading underground Hounds were taken to a pond to cool off where the decision was made to head in The good thing about hunting with such knowledgeable people is their understanding of the sport Everyone was extremely friendly and I made the most of having all that knowledge on my doorstep Hounds continued to hunt well despite weather varying wildly from cool to extremely warm The kennels country is our most expansive and stretches from the sandy soil in the low country up to the clay ground on top of the escarpment with mixtures In the space of two weeks the weather Two weeks later the weather had of crops grassland and wooded areas had turned from cool to blisteringly turned once again to rainy this time The Niagara escarpment winds it s and we paraded hounds in way up through it all which makes Creemore on Thanksgiving for varied and beautiful riding weekend The Creemore with stunning views from the top Echo had published an I love being able to live ride and article the Thursday before hunt here but from a Huntsman s and a good crowd turned out perspective it s challenging No despite the weather This was two hunting days are the same my rst time parading the The weather patterns created by hounds as huntsman and I the escarpment combined with was moved by the numerous the varying soil types create wildly cheers of congratulations uctuating scenting conditions as we paraded through the I also believe that the coyote town Not an experience population moves around in this you get everyday it was Photos by Jodi Gray area and is never in the same place lovely thank you to all who for too long We have had some James Balding programming GPS collars cheered 8 www tnyh horse

Without the support and permission of our landowners we would not have access to the beautiful countryside we have to ride in It s important that we all remember and appreciate this We are always looking to expand our country and it is a continual work in progress This fall we were lucky enough to be able to hunt some new territory thanks to The Robinson Family and their neighbours There is some more development to be done in this amazing xture with views and coyotes that don t disappoint In October every two years our foxhunting neighbours at the Beaver Meadows Foxhound Hunt host a fundraising invitational hunting festival This year we were kindly invited to come and hunt our hounds Another rst for me Every Canadian Hunt Masters and staff apart from the far West and East of Canada in Ontario and Quebec were represented and over 100 riders would attend the event The Beaver Meadow Masters John Curtis Beverley Stephenson Richard Mitchell and Mervin Magner were so welcoming and our hostess who boarded both hounds horses and us Jodi Gray was second to none The weekend was full of fun and laughter and our hounds did us proud The nal day was one of the best days hunting I have ever had and is a day I won t forget Thank you to everybody Hounds continued to hunt well for the remainder of the season with some exceptional days towards the end when staff only were out as the weather had started to turn cold and nasty Our last day hunting for the season was on December the rst when we decided to call it a day after an extremely successful hunt I was more pleased with the hounds after our rst season together than I could ever have imagined Be proud of your TNYH hounds they are an exceptional pack As I write this report I am reminded by every event I am describing about the overwhelming support that is behind my every move They are too numerous to mention individually but it doesn t go unnoticed and I am extremely grateful My children James and Laura are my biggest supporters Photos by Cat Davey Huntsman Ros Balding readying to move off and loudest critics who keep me grounded and without whom I would be lost However I have adopted another member into our family although she doesn t know it namely my professional whip Teresa She is my unwavering supporter organiser memory con dant and friend I would be lost without her thank you Hunting is team work and it works at its best when we all pull in the same direction I have a fantastic team at the kennels and the hunting wouldn t be the same without them Huge thanks to the whips on a hunting day both on horseback and in trucks I hope everyone appreciates what an invaluable team of people the whips are knowledge and communication in equal amounts are the keys to their success Janet Carl Teresa and Laura with Heidi as back up on horses and James Cat and Eric on the road are all worth their weight in gold Polly has transferred her riding knowledge to the truck and is our newest member of the truck whip team She is doing a great job Sarah Giles has been stand in for Teresa in her absence and did an equally great job of keeping me right at Beaver Meadows The winter is usually let down time for horses and hounds They worked hard and deserved some time off However this was my second winter in Canada as we didn t go South this year and wow was it a cold one I guess I got my taste of what a Canadian winter can be Although we have covered yards to keep the snow off there is very little we can do about the ice Hounds have to be shut in in insulated lodges to keep warm and the hard work of cleaning up in sub zero temperatures is relentless The winds in Mulmur are something else too I was extremely honoured to be asked to go and hunt the Sedge eld hounds in North Carolina for a few days in February and relieved to escape the cold The Sedge eld have a pack of Penmarydels which was another rst for me What a friendly group of members and pack of hounds I thoroughly enjoyed my time thank you The Sedge eld also host the largest performance trials for hounds in March every year in an amazing plantation dedicated solely to performance trials for hounds and eld trials for bird dogs I was asked to be a judge at this year s trials another rst and had a fabulous time The Sedge eld host over 200 riders and 13 packs of hounds It was an incredible experience and if TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 9

HUNTSMAN S REPORT 2018 Continues you ever get the opportunity to go you should The judging is tricky with so many hounds but by the second day I was getting the hang of things The organization of the event and catering skills of the hunt ladies was impressive They do it all themselves I also had a visit to Pennsylvania to the Rose Tree Blue Mountain hunt with Master Sean Kully and his family This was part of the PDP Sean has a fabulous pack of hard hunting hounds and hunt mainly fox in steep wooded gullies I had a great day and learned a lot from the experience The hunt is friendly and welcoming and Sean and his family were great hosts Spring Hunting started late this year and so was only short The weather had teased us with an early thaw then decided to come back at us again just when we thought we could start hunting The spring is tricky as farmers are keen to get their crops in and so we must be considerate It is a great time for hunting though as the temperatures are usually a bit cooler and damper which helps scent I was wondering if the hounds would start off the season as well as they had nished the fall season or if the winter would have put them back a bit However I needn t have worried as they set the season off with as much pace as they had nished in the fall The nish of my PDP was with a trip to the Virginia Hound Show and also a series of kennel tours and visiting the MFHA headquarters At the hound show we were in the ring with the judges gaining valuable tips on hound types and conformation I also had a trip to the Bryn Mawr Hound Show this year These two shows in the States are the top two hound shows in North America and are not only a networking opportunity but a chance to see which packs are doing what and provide a few ideas or two for future breeding programmes It s an invaluable chance to keep touch with what s going on and to represent Photos by Cat Davey Ros Carl Teresa Laura and Janet Canada Thank you to my Masters for allowing me the opportunity This year the Canadian Hound Show was hosted by the London Hunt Teresa Laura and I took the hounds down and once again they did us proud It was great to see so many packs there taking part and also lovely to see most packs being rewarded with prizes for all the dedication and hard work that goes into breeding hounds If I could only win one prize it would have to be the pack class although nerve wracking to do it gives me the most pleasure As I write this report we are holding our puppy show next weekend I bred a litter of puppies last year out of a lovely bitch Killinick given to us by Marion Thorne MFH Genesee Valley She has superb fox sense and the sire of the pups Signal is a dog I was particularly pleased with drafted to us from Richard Roberts when he was at Deep Run I am looking forward to seeing how they hunt though I m not sure how pleased they are with the idea of showing Next weekend could be interesting back to our Tadpole and I don t think they like showing either but I m pretty sure they will hunt We also have a pup by TNY Ruler a fell dog given by The North Tyne Hunt in the UK and out of an Old English bitch from the Blue Ridge hunt in Virginia You can read more about these hounds in my article Meet The Young Entry We have some lovely puppies this summer from two litters one litter out of Naughty by Farquhar and another out of Delta by Wentworth Future stars Thank you all for showing me such support during my rst year here as Huntsman I will continue to try hard to keep the Club moving forward Thank you to the Masters for their support and con dence in me Thank you to the members for persevering with me Thank you to the landowners and their generosity and Thank you to all the fabulous staff and volunteers Charles Montgomery from Bull Run also gave us 3 white bitches that go TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 11

Masters of Foxhounds of America Professional Development Program written by photo supplied by Andrew Barclay I t has been my distinct pleasure to have worked with Ros for the past twelve months with the Masters of Foxhounds Association s Professional Development Program For those of you who are not familiar with the P D P it is a program instituted by the MFHA 14 years ago to enhance the education of hunt staff Over those years we have graduated 58 students from 22 different states and Canada representing 51 different hunts It is a yearlong extensive course starting at the Virginia Foxhound Show in late May During the hound show the participants of the course get to go into the rings and observe the judging This unique experience gives the class an opportunity to interact with some of the top hound judges in the North America as well as from the UK This has proven to be one of the most valuable aspects of our course and is always very popular with the students Over the years the judges have been very forthcoming in explaining their choices Often they have asked for opinions from the students The day after the hound show the class goes to the MFHA of ce and sees the innerworkings of the organization and to have a chance to work hands on with the Kennel Stud Book program and Billie Jo Pearl who maintains the Stud Books and knows the program better than anyone else Later that day all the participants get an extensive library of hunting books as well as CDs DVDs and pamphlets Over the course of the year they are assigned a book a month to read followed by a written assignment These are not always easy reads and it can be a lot when hunting is going hard As well as the reading each participant is also sent away on a hunting trip This year Ros was sent by the MFHA to visit Sean Fully at Rose Tree Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania She also managed to go to the Sedge eld Hunt in North Carolina where she covered for their Master and Huntsman Fred Berry who had to be out of town for a couple of hunts I was privileged to visit Ros this year in September for her rst Opening Meet I know that my visit only added to her butter ies but I was so impressed with her calm demeanor and her way with her hounds I was also so happy to see how it is a true family affair with both her children active in the day s sport Although scent was dif cult she and her hounds made a very good account of themselves It was a pleasure to have been there This course is a time consuming commitment and I think that anyone who knows Ros will not be surprised at the fact that she excelled Her work was always well done thoughtful and insightful It is my sincere hope that she found our program educational and interesting as well as maybe a bit fun I feel that the Toronto and North York Hunt is in very capable hands with Ros in the kennels I hope that she will be a part of hunting in North America for a very long time TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 13

Impressions of the Beaver Meadows Foxhound Festival by Andrew Marren Huntsman of the Montreal Hunt H aving had the honour of hunting the Montreal Hounds at the Beaver Meadows Invitational Hunt Festival 3 years ago it was my pleasure to return as a guest in 2017 and take in the action from a much less stressful perspective This Festival is one of my favourite Hunt events in Canada as it uniquely gives us all a chance to celebrate our sport together The 2017 Festival was attended by the Montreal Hunt Lake of Two Mountains Hunt Toronto and North York Hunt Eglinton and Caledon Hounds Ottawa Valley Hunt Wellington Waterloo Hunt and the Hamilton Hunt As usual it was hosted by the Beaver Meadows Foxhound Club in their spectacular hunt country overlooking Lake Ontario and miles of rolling hills draped in fall colours Those attending the 2017 Beaver Meadows Foxhound Festival were not only lucky to have a full weekend of beautiful weather and fun but also the exhilaration of following one of Canada s premier packs the Toronto and North York Hunt which was the guest pack for 2017 I was privileged to be up front with their huntsman Rosslyn Balding who hunted tirelessly and made sure there was plenty of sport both for the whips and the field The first day was hosted by the Gray family at their beautiful Grayfield Farm with a spectacular lawn meet of about 50 riders Masters and staff were piped in and generous stirrup cups were served in Photo by Millie Marren Panorama of the field gathering for hounds to arrive for new cast front of the house before the first field set off at a cracking speed with no time to waste Plenty of jumping was in the cards for those looking for a challenge and endless fall scenery for those wanting to sit back and enjoy the views The day was wrapped up by one of the most delicious breakfasts I have had in a while and I know those who were there would agree Photo by Jodi Gray Foreground Mervin Magner former MFH BMF followed by Ros Balding Huntsman TNYH hounds and whipper in Laura Balding The Saturday night was spent at a local winery where everyone had a chance to mingle and recap the previous day As usual the Beaver Meadows club did not disappoint with their choice of music The great band gave everyone an excuse to dance the lactic acid out of his or her legs well into the night TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 17

IMPRESSIONS OF THE BEAVER MEADOWS FOXHOUND FESTIVAL Continues The second day of hunting Sunday was hosted by the Dekeyser family at their scenic farm and attended by an impressive field of 75 I had the experience of hunting this territory myself so I really felt for Rosslyn as the location can be quite intimidating The Dekeyser farm is set frighteningly close to HWY 401 however it also lends the most amazing view of the lake from a cliff edge that can only be experienced in this one unique spot As nerve racking as it is for those hunting their own hounds that fear is quickly outweighed by the breathtaking views of the sparkling blue waters Photo by Millie Marren of Lake Ontario This day was my Andrew Marren Hunstman Montreal Hunt absolute favourite and filled with Rosslyn Balding Huntsman TNYH with TNYH Hounds memories I will cherish for a long time Rosslyn s pack took about 30 minutes finding before we were all myself extremely lucky to have accepted a drink and cheers before treated to a chase lasting over 3 been one of the few people by her tending to her hounds and horses hours A coyote was hunted back side for what can only be called a and forth throughout a cornfield perfect and successful conclusion to This moment alone proved to me before finally being pressured out on the day The most beautiful moment that we are still as a whole capable the southwest corner to the delight of the day for me was seeing about of camaraderie that many thought of the field that happened to be 20 people waiting to sing For she s lost I thank her for trying her lining that exact location The chase a jolly good fellow to Rosslyn upon heart out and giving everyone such was on and the TNYH hounds and her return to the hunt trailer Tired a special and positive experience Rosslyn were merciless I consider bloodied and smiling she graciously I would like to congratulate the Toronto and North York Hunt on a job superbly done Their new huntsman Rosslyn Balding has taken to hunting like a duck to water The hounds both looked great and performed outstandingly Everything flowed seamlessly and showcased what a well organized Hunt is meant to look like Well done Photo by Jodi Gray Piping in the Masters Staff and Whippers in to the stirrup cup 18 www tnyh horse In my opinion the weekend was a great success and I look forward to more events like this in the future Events that remind us of why we do this in the first place The shared experience of hound work horses nature adrenaline and friendship is what our sport is all about Kick on and bring on the next Festival

Thirteen of our Best by Rosslyn Balding O wen and I woke early on Thursday morning 27th of March to the sound of pouring rain A ne hunting morn it certainly was not We let twenty one keen hounds out of the Landrover at Grindon Green at 10 30 a m and it was still raining The usual end of season die hard hunters Raf e and Tom were there of course sitting tight with windows rmly wound shut against the elements Owen set off into the trees We had forced a radio on him so that he could keep us informed There is nothing like hunting from inside a dry warm car when it is pouring with rain outside Shortly there came a message that hounds were marking a fox in the pit at Grindon Green and assistance was required Raf e Tom and I struggled to get to the pit only too discover that a terrier with webbed feet would have had dif culty helping the hounds with that fox as the pit had lled with water So he was left for a drier day and cross hounds and a cross huntsman continued in search of another fox Spirits were raised as another fox was soon found and hounds were away hunting well only to let depression set in once more as this time our quarry ran straight into the Lamparts Pit This spot is big enough for a double decker bus let alone a pack of hounds Nothing could be done except to bring the hounds away once more The day was not going well and unbeknown to us at this time it was not going to improve Still once again a cross huntsman and his hounds set off to Black Fell in search of another fox By the way it was still raining Photo by Ros Another was soon found and things were looking good as hounds set away in good voice We felt anxious again though as they turned and ran in the same direction towards the Lamparts Pit Fortunately our fears were unfounded as they ran on past the pit and on down the side of the River Irthing It was back to vehicles for Raf e Tom and me and we followed on through the trees as far as the road could take us We got out of the cars and walked up nearly to Rotheryhaugh where we could plainly hear hounds marking in full fury After much debate between slightly waterlogged radios it was decided that the hounds were marking across the other side of the Irthing As the adrenaline was owing and as we were already soaked through Raf e and I decided to brave the raging torrents with terriers and equipment to reach Owen and the hounds at Newhouse Holes Tom however was not dressed for a swim so left his terrier Spot with us at this point and retreated to observe from the dry comfort of his car Spot and Trixie yapped encouragement and pulled on their leads to persuade Raf e and me to take the plunge as we stood dithering on the river bank and decided that the depth was de nitely over wellie tops By the way it was still raining Remember where we crossed were Raf e s last words as we gingerly waded in Crossing a fast owing angry river at 3 30 p m in the pouring rain with two mad keen terriers two spades chains whips sticks and a torch suddenly seemed a bad idea However the hounds were all going mad and Owen was blowing two pips on his horn for all he was worth I was relieved to reach dry land and turned back to see how Raf e was getting on only to hear him shriek at Spot What kind of a thing are you as Spot had turned round wrapping the lead around Raf e s knees and was heading for home However the noise of the hounds persuaded Spot that there was greater excitement to be had at my side of the river and swam on over Raf e and I now on the correct side of the river with wellies acting like wetsuits full of water splashed our way towards a pack of hounds TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 21

THIRTEEN OF OUR BEST Continues barely recognizable now as they were as black as coal from the peaty soil Right said Owen full of enthusiasm This time they ll get their fox The day was feeling brighter though incidentally it was still raining and Raf e was feeling slightly concerned about the speeds at which the Irthing was now rising with the nearest bridge being at Gilsland We had hardly released the terriers when the most enormous fox shot out of a hole under my feet and raced off at great speed straight back across the Irthing with hounds in full cry six yards behind him Dam was the politest way I can describe Owen s exclamation Oh well back to the Landrover to follow as best as we could no hesitation at the river this time I suppose it seemed pointless to care once wet through This was the last we heard of eighteen of those hounds as they headed full steam towards Gilsland ve miles away in Bewcastle country Little did we know then that this would be the last we would hear or see of them for three days Owen and I nally got home around midnight with only four hounds Willow Tarset and Bellman who had never actually been on that hunt and Captain whom we had picked up making his way back home Oh and yes it was still raining The next morning Colonel one of the older hounds was back at the kennels We found it quite surprising that none of the other hounds had made it back home We searched all morning around Gilsland Walltown and back on the military road but no sign of anything and ever more strange no telephone calls from any farmers having seen anything When we got home Target an other older hound was asleep on the front lawn We were starting to get suspicious We went out again that evening and picked up Tally at Grindon Green where we met and Owen blew his 22 www tnyh horse horn and listened for a while Then we heard the strangest noise de nitely a dog of some sort but not like a hound It was around 10 30 p m it was pitch dark and we were in the middle of trees That s a poacher with a erce Alsatian or worse I squeaked Don t be so silly snapped Owen as he blew his horn again The Hound of the Baskervilles howled loudly and both Owen and I turned and ran back to the Landrover with the hound in hot pursuit On reaching the Landrover I switched on full beam and there came Leader one of last year s pups every hair on his body erect and shaking with fear We felt rather silly Saturday was a joint meet with the Bewcastle hounds and still with thirteen of our best hounds missing and no sign of any of them we felt sure that they were stuck fast somewhere As they had run into Bewcastle country one of their men Brian Laidlaw better known as Yogi kindly said that he would show me some of their pit holds in that direction So we went straight from the meet at Felicia Crags through to the trees past Whitehill and on to Butterhurn through to Gilsland Here we turned left up through Wardrew Farm and as far as the road would take us We spent a good three hours searching many many pit holes and drop ins from old mine shafts on Thirwall Common I had never seen so many holes on a piece of ground What a place for losing stock of any kind let alone a pack of hounds We had nearly got to Moss Peteral Farm to look at some swallow holes and were about to give up our search when suddenly we both heard a whimper There was a strong wind blowing in our direction so we crouched down to listen Again we heard a whimper Yes de nitely it was from hounds but where They could have been a hundred yards away or ten miles Full of excitement we spread apart and set off in the direction we had heard the noise We were listening all the time but did not hear anything more I was nearly back at the Landrover again when Yogi let out the loudest holloa ever I ran over to him and there under a wooden pallet about eight feet vertically downward were our hounds huddled together We were ecstatic The most incredible thing was that we had walked just thirty yards away from that hole in the morning and never heard a sound If we had not heard that whimper on the wind we would have missed them for sure There was evidence that the hounds had been trying to escape as there were scratch marks all the way round an overhang at the top but there was no possibility of them getting out by themselves Yogi lowered me down into the hole and between us we managed to lift every hound out What are they doing I shouted out of the hole they re all having a jolly good empty out replied Yogi Not one poor old hound had been to the loo in three days Yogi pulled me out and I had a quick count Much to my dismay there were only twelve hounds Trophy was missing I knew from experience that she would go right into a hole after her fox and felt sure that she must be still in there somewhere We put the hounds back in the Landrover They seemed not too bad for their adventure lthy a bit dehydrated and weak but in good spirits I went back to the hole and we both thought that we could hear a growling noise under our feet I shouted and shouted but heard no more We decided that it was best to take the hounds home and come back with reinforcements Owen and I returned later and could clearly hear Trohpy this time We started to dig the wet clay soil under our feet in the hole All of a sudden the ground gave way there was a tremendous stench of fox and there was Trophy lying down a wet dripping tunnel next to our cunning and elusive big dog fox Once again we arrived home about midnight but this time all the hounds were safely back at home and we were very very happy

Woman leads hunt for the first time by Trina Berlo The Creemore Echo T oronto and North York Hunt TNYH although still heavily steeped in the traditions of English foxhunting has for the rst time in its long history hired a female huntsman The hunt s 42 hounds or 21 couple of hounds as it is said and ve staff horses are now in the charge of Rosslyn Balding the rst female huntsman in the hunt s 175 year history and the second woman in all of Canada to hunt a live pack of hounds Before being promoted to huntsman Balding was whipper in for many years assistant to the huntsman two of those at the Toronto and North York Hunt in Mulmur helping in the care and training of the animals and management of the property As huntsman Balding leads the hounds and Field Masters lead the riders as they ride to hounds an activity that is demonstrated every Thanksgiving weekend in Creemore when members of the hunt parade through the village on Saturday morning to the delight of spectators The parade has become a favourite fall tradition and is followed by a meet and greet with the hounds During the hunt the hounds chase fox and coyote but the hounds aren t vicious animals They love people and are more than willing to slobber on anyone who wants to say hello In fact Balding believes in socializing the hounds and is looking for people to foster this year s puppies until they turn one year old and are ready to be entered into the hunt pack Keeping with tradition the hunt s foxhounds are never bought or sold they are bred between clubs to maintain the attributes needed for this demanding sport 24 www tnyh horse Photo by Cat Davey The huntsman leads the Hounds in the hunt and is assisted by both mounted and road Whippers in who deter hounds getting on to busy roadways and endeavour to keep hounds within the hunting territory Balding said they carry whips but they are mostly for show and visual cues In formal attire the men wear red jackets and the women wear black all with the Royal Blue collar of the Toronto and North York Hunt as huntsman Balding will be out front in red her professional whipper in Teresa Robinson a Mulmur resident by her side along with joint Masters Laurel Byrne Andy Bite and Carl Feairs Balding became interested in horses as a teenager and has worked in hunt service her whole life She said it is a male dominated world with very few women That is slowly changing said Balding Not in England but more so over here for women to whipper in Originally from Scotland Balding was married to a huntsman in England Sadly he died of cancer and later Balding took an opportunity to move to Canada with her two teenage children James and Laura who are also volunteer whippers in with the hunt Traditionally there is no formal education for a huntsman but Balding has just successfully completed the Professional Development Program sponsored by the Master of Foxhounds Association of America MFHA There are only six candidates annually accepted into the program Photo by Cat Davey Balding has stated that there is a program in the UK for hunt staff but not nearly as comprehensive as the MFHA program

Meet The Young Entry by Rosslyn Balding photos by Cat Davey H ound breeding like any sort of livestock breeding is something where passion and opinions run deep Most Huntsmen will study pedigrees going back generations and not only have a preference for a certain type but will have knowledge and a fondness for old lines and memorable hounds It is a subject that enthusiasts will happily spend many hours studying and holding conversations with likeminded people The process of producing hounds from puppies through to hunting in the pack is a long and careful one Every Huntsman will have his preferred way of doing it but patience care and a capability to understand each individual is universal throughout the process Hounds have individual characteristics just like humans and so although the same methods may be applied not every hound follows the rules Starting to introduce the young entry is always an exciting time as this is when all the careful study hopefully pays off with the production of a hound that ts well into your pack and works well in your particular country and Hunt horses other dogs bicycles traf c livestock basically anything he may come across in later life the better Puppy walking is a little challenging and certainly hard work but can be a very rewarding experience When the young hound comes back home to the kennels the next part of his education begins He must learn where he ts into the hierarchy of the pack How to show respect to his elders where to sleep how to eat together and how to interact with the others Hounds are very sociable animals and love being together They sleep in a huge hound pile all on top of each other regardless of how much room they may have Like children the early part of a hound s education makes a massive difference to how he tackles life This is where the puppy walkers come into play Puppy walking is essential to building a con dent well socialised hound Puppy walkers take puppies home at 8 weeks old and introduce them to family life The more interaction with children hens all at once with the Huntsman and the whipper in They are also exercised with bikes and later on with horses They need to learn how to behave when out on the road when meeting traf c or visitors Their education is also about where I t into their life They have to learn the various commands and what my voice body language and presence means to the pack When they are ready they start to come out for walks The hounds are exercised everyday all together and Hounds learn fastest from each other and so to begin the process each pup is given a mentor to whom they are coupled together at the start Later they will progress to one of their peers and then nally on their own There is a lot for a young hound to take in during his rst year of life and TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 29

MEET THE YOUNG ENTRY Continues it s amazing how well they cope with every step Some are shyer than others and some take to it very quickly and are outgoing This is where care and tact are required and is part of the enjoyment of getting to know each one When you next come across a pack of hounds remember that everyone is an individual and have come through or currently going through an education Just like school kids If anyone is interested in walking puppies please don t hesitate to contact the kennels we are always delighted to have more walkers at the kennels imported from Cumbria in England and by a home bred fell dog Navvy who has been superb in his work This year s class consists of 11 puppies Four boys Kildare Killarney Kegger and Ruger and seven girls Katy Karma Kestrel Teacup Timely Treasure and Ruby And last but not least is a bitch puppy Ruby out of an Old English bitch at the Blue Ridge kennels in Virginia Bear Creek Gina and by a North Tyne Fell dog Ruler here at the kennels imported from Northumberland England Six were bred here at the kennels and are crossbred hounds They are a mix of personality with about half being shy and the rest very outgoing with tons of energy The Dam Killinick is very shy and the Sire Signal is outgoing so it s interesting to see how the offspring are half and half also Three white bitches Teacup Treasure and Timely were drafted to us from The Bull Run Hunt in Virginia and whose grandmother Tadpole is here at the kennels One dog pup Ruger is a pure Fell hound out of a fell bitch Relish here 30 www tnyh horse Photo by Ros Balding

Hurry Up and Wait how to be a road whip by Cat Davey I came to road whipping by accident Really I just wanted to get some good photos but I always seemed to be in the right place at the wrong time or is it the wrong place at the right time Whichever it is I seemed to always be where the hounds were headed when they needed stopping so I would put my camera down and jump in to help keep hounds off the roads Eventually I decided to volunteer to road whip on a steady basis I was going to be there anyway and with usually at least 2 horses out it was going to be a long wait Little did I realize how often I would still be out gathering hounds after the horses were long back at the trailers Photo by Cat Davey Road whipping involves lots of hurrying from place to place and even more waiting for something to happen You won t see much of the eld or the hounds unless they come to a road and then you are likely to be on high alert or you are being sent to another spot for the next draw I will admit that on those rare occasions when I am in a spot where I can see and hear the hounds streaming across a eld hot on the trail of a coyote and the horses all following behind well it is just as thrilling as when I used to ride to hounds myself I won t mention how many years ago that was Needless to say I don t get as many photos as I used to due mostly to being well away from the action but I do get the opportunity to get to know lots of the hounds personally The newer GPS collars make our job a bit easier but not all the hounds wear them Listening on the radio to what the huntsman and whips are saying and knowing the territory are the two most important jobs of a road whip You need to know not only where the hounds are but also where they are likely to go and how you can get there preferably before they do Communication goes both ways too Often when the hounds strike they can run through tough territory much quicker than a horse can and it is important to keep track of the hounds and let the huntsman know where they are and how she can get there This spring long time member Polly Winsor stepped up and volunteered to road whip as well She might say she is learning from James and myself but I would say she is doing what I did jumping in and learning on the go Polly smartly downloaded maps of each xture so that she can learn the crossing points and general boundaries of each meet Plans are in the works to name and learn landmarks so that we all know where we are and aren t when talking on the radios As well I am in the process of photographing each and every hound from both sides and the top to make a catalog of hounds that will help all the whips learn to identify all the hounds In the past I have learned who certain hounds are only because I have had to pick them up so many times In fact that is how I made friends with Hamish who used to be notoriously hard to catch I would encourage any member to ride along with a road whip at least once to see what is involved in the job You never know you might decide to become a roadwhip yourself if you ever nd yourself between horses TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 39

Bob Elder John Elder and TNYH by Polly Winsor I n 1977 I had the privilege of meeting Robert Gow Elder who had been Master of Foxhounds of the Toronto and North York Hunt from 1957 to 1963 and was then serving as President I was introduced to him in the old farmhouse at Beverley Farm on Yonge Street in Aurora soon after I joined the club I remember feeling nervous at that crowded party not only because I didn t know anyone but also because the sport of foxhunting seemed intimidating due to its peculiar language special clothes and little rules of correct behaviour The moment Bob Elder spoke to me a magical thing happened He somehow convinced me in the course of three or four minutes that having met me was the high point of his day I didn t see Bob again he died in 1979 but his son John inherited enough of his father s remarkable gift that when he was MFH from 1969 to 1986 anyone who came to a hunt mounted or on foot immediately felt genuinely welcome It was always a pleasure to ride behind John Elder He is now retired but is an honourary life member of TNYH and sometimes joins our gatherings You can see his portrait in our clubhouse hanging beside a portrait of his father Recently I realized that I knew almost nothing about the Elders beyond the fact that John s brother Jim had won a gold medal in show jumping at the Olympics I have this excuse for my ignorance one of the many reasons that following a pack of hounds is such a relaxing form of recreation is that the topic of our conversations whether these take place on horseback when we speak in a whisper because we hope to hear the voice of a hound or when we chatter at breakfast afterwards mostly are not about ourselves but about everyone s horses I did know that John was a highly respected eye surgeon and that the horses he rode came from Jim s stable Elderberry Hill Farm on Yonge Street in Aurora I also knew that after retiring from being Master he served as President of our club Father and son both MFH and President matches the record of Colonel Cifford Sifton and his son Michael So I wondered if the Elders Jim John and their sister Margaret Cudney would share with us a little more of their family history To this they kindly agreed and allowed me to make copies of these photographs Bob Elder was born in Toronto in 1905 and grew up working for his father Norman Elder whose company built delivery vehicles The business had been founded by Bob s grandfather Robert James Elder who had been Bob Elder 1956 apprenticed to the carriagebuilding trade in Scotland Emigrating to Canada in 1867 he made wagons and carriages rst at 312 Queen Street West Toronto soon moving his factory to 26 Soho Street Robert Elder Carriage Works Ltd founded in 1872 continued to thrive as the company passed down to his son Norman By the mid 1920s Norman s son Bob was running the business and he became its owner when Norman died in 1949 Their houses were in the west end of the city not far from High Park and Bob enjoyed riding at the Old Mills Stable near Bloor and Jane Streets When Bob married Margaret Rogers in 1931 he moved to the suburbs in the northeast where Lawrence Avenue is stopped by the wide valley of the Don River John Elder on Vixen TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 43

BOB ELDER JOHN ELDER AND TNYH Continues Beginning in the 1930s in spite of his heavy load of business Bob was a keen member of the Toronto and North York Hunt He stabled his horses at Beverley Farm during hunt season moving them closer to home the rest of the time to a stable run by Charles Morris the former huntsman of the Toronto Hunt In those years that area had miles of hacking trails bridle paths connecting Sunnybrook Park Edwards Gardens up to Hoggs Hollow and Wind elds Park Margaret Cudney remembers her father waking early almost every day to go riding before driving downtown for a full day of work Foxhunting was his passion Sometimes he assisted the huntsman by whipping in After a day in the hunt eld when he was asked how it went his answer was always the same even if hounds had drawn blank and the weather had been windy cold and raining grinning broadly he d proclaim Best day ever Bob and Margaret s four children Jim Margaret John and Norman were born before the outbreak of World War II The ve years of war 1939 to 1945 were a period of stress but opportunity for the family business Because gasoline was rationed companies reverted to horsepower to make deliveries Eaton s Department Store used black horses Simpson s grays all of them pulling wagons built by Robert Elder Ltd More importantly the company built trucks for the Canadian military Bob was one of the rst businessmen to foresee the future market for refrigerated trucks After the war he acquired a company that made compressors and soon became a world leader in this new type of Photo by Cat delivery vehicle All Bob Elder s children were good riders active in the Pony Club but especially Jim and Norm who were both on the Canadian Olympic team Jim at the age of 16 John became involved in competitive team sports at school which left him little time to ride as a teen ager and none at all once he entered university and then medical school Jim was employed full time in the refrigeration part of the Elder business but his involvement on weekends in showjumping forced him to give up foxhunting In 1954 Bob purchased a farm to use as a stable located just across the street to very few people Michael Sifton said in a private letter that Bob had shepherded the hunt club through all of the most dif cult stages while we were at Beverley One of the several dif culties Sifton had in mind was the illness of the club s English huntsman Fred Pickford After deciding to terminate Pickford the Directors imported another huntsman from England only to discover that he was far too fond of strong drink It was Bob who overcame the prejudices of his colleagues insisting that a man born in Ontario could learn to handle hounds just as well as someone with a British accent Thus Robert Oliver who had begun as Pickford s stable boy became huntsman of TNYH in 1971 TNYH was also indebted to Bob s good judgement when he convinced one of his sons to become MFH in 1969 John was not an obvious choice for he had only started to hunt two years before after completing his long medical training and nally opening his surgical practice At that point John had made the conscious decision to take up a serious Bob Elder in 1974 on Mark II recreation being aware of other professionals from Beverley Farm which he named so consumed by their work that they Elderberry Hill Farm When Jim got burned out With Jim s assurance that married in 1958 he and his wife he would supply him with a horse Marianne who also hunted as did his John joined TNYH Although he can sister settled there Bob served as MFH tell vivid tales of the misbehaviours between 1957 and 1963 followed by of a few of his sister s horses John a number of years as President and quickly discovered that he had chosen he was glad to have Jim look after his the right sport The same passion horses Bob would greet anyone who that had so thoroughly gripped Bob came out to hunt with the same easy Elder blossomed in his son Soon manner whatever their social status nothing could stand in the way of Dr Zita Barbara May recalled With his Elder s hunting even if it meant his welcoming personality and beaming checking on a patient in the wee hours smile he welcomed everyone of the morning or changing out of Whether they were young or old timid riding clothes to attend an afternoon or bold owners of small farms or vast appointment John simply loved to estates it mattered not to Bob The follow hounds As a result the rest of Canadian Pony Club History p 33 us loved to follow him Like other great leaders many of Bob s important actions were known TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 45

Just A Little Bit of Irish Turf written by photos supplied by Bev Nicolson I had read the story of the experience of foxhunting in Ireland written by another TNYH member It both exhilarated and scared me When my husband and I decided to take a trip to Iceland Scotland and Ireland I knew that I had to try it First we stopped in Iceland and rode the Icelandic pony note there is a debate about pony vs horse but that is a story for another time We learned and experienced the tolt a smooth ground covering gait unique to the breed We were supplied with the appropriate gear and set off across the rugged terrain It was a lovely and enjoyable introduction to the breed From there we went on to visit relatives in Scotland Sadly we did not have the opportunity to ride however were treated to the sight of the Kelpie s Magni cent statues dedicated to the Scottish Clydesdales which pulled the barges up and down the canals These can be seen as you drive along the motorway and are stunning to see rising above the landscape They are even more stunning when you enter the park in which they are situated and stand at the base of these 26 5 meter tall structures They are worth a visit whether you are a horse person or not Arriving in Ireland we toured north before heading south to the Village of Adare in County Limerick and the Dunraven Arms Hotel This is one of the loveliest hotels I have stayed at warm inviting great food and operated by a fellow hunting enthusiast Louis Murphy Through email I had been in contact with Louis and he had made all of the arrangements for me to hunt with the infamous Galway Blazers on an experienced steed to be leased from Willy Leahy Regretfully our travel plans only left one day for hunting I may just have to go back The actual name of the hunt is the County Galway Hunt It is reputed that following a joint meet with another hunt there were exuberant post Hunt celebrations in Dooley s Hotel Birr which resulted in the Hotel being set alight hence the revelers were christened The Blazers and the name has stuck ever since There are over 80 hunts across Ireland I was told at least three within close range of the hotel I had speci ed that I did not want to do ditches or drains so the xture this day was stone wall country with the Galway Blazers The day dawned I was dressed had a marvelous breakfast in the Hotel dining room and with directions to the meet my husband and I headed out Now directions in Ireland are a little light on the speci cs we were to take the motorway to the second exit and follow it to Aille Cross No address no farm name My husband has a good sense of direction and we found Aille Cross but none of the usual signs of a hunt until yes follow that horse trailer We arrived at a farm with a yard bustling with trailers horses and upon inquiry this was the location of today s meet We were invited to come in to the house and meet the huntsman the eld master and other members have a snack have a toddy and your horse will appear soon I was assured There were several people from the United States who hunt in Ireland regularly they assured me this was a wonderful xture Sure enough it was not long until I was pointed in the direction of a gentleman and was introduced to Willy Leahy Right then he said your horse is outside The atmosphere TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 49

JUST A LITTLE BIT OF IRISH TURF Continues around the house and the yard was starting to buzz the hounds were starting to bay and departure was imminent We went out to the road where the van was parked I was introduced to a young lady from Florida who would act as our guardian for the day and a couple from the United States who had been riding their horses in lessons for several days prior to hunting My introduction to my mount for the day went something like this this is Chester let s check your stirrup length up you go have a good day The Huntsman and Master came out of the yard and we were off We went over so many stone walls I gave up trying to keep count the rst few were a little sketchy as Chester jumps completely differently than my horse but I eventually gured it out well almost Did I mention that Chester was beautifully braided and was wearing a lovely standing martingale Things were going well as we jumped over a stone wall onto a paved road slid turned right and galloped off over a stone wall with wire over a pallet leaning against a stone wall over a stone wall land and then gallop through shoe sucking mud bog their mud is different it was explained when I expressed concern for legs and shoes and over a stone wall into a pasture with sheep and back out Now Chester is a seasoned hunt horse and likes to be near the front he also knows when there is a crop eld and taking the headlands path is required apparently Yes after a lovely jump he took a sharp left turn and I didn t Now the mud at that time of year is rather forgiving albeit sticky and being the only Canadian present I felt it was required to get myself up and get back in the saddle Looking up I noted that Chester had been caught and was on his way back to me our guardian gave me a leg up she hopped on and off we went to catch up with the eld Three more jumps later there was a check One of the ladies came up to me and said It s OK you didn t stand a chance he turned so sharply and a gentleman came up and said in his lovely lilt with an encouraging smile You re just taking home a bit of Irish turf I felt better We went on through an untold number of elds and over an unknown number of walls through a 50 www tnyh horse lake which it was explained wasn t there all of the time had a mare and foal run with us for awhile and walked calmly down one ditch Yea Chester In the middle of all of this I saw several fox crossing not more than 12 meters away from me They were so close I could see the black on their faces pointy ears dark eyes and huge uffy tails While we were sitting on the top of a hill we had a view of a fox down below working it s way through the ground cover and the hounds trailing after him then a second fox crossed the rst s path the rst fox jumped clear of the ground onto a log and the hounds followed the scent of the second fox in a different direction It was amazing to watch I was speechless Apparently we hit on ve that day Anyway after three and a half hours I was beginning to think I would have to give in but a couple more walls and elds later the Huntsman started gathering the hounds Now while we were out my husband was following on the roads and he noted that there were quite a number of other followers and two fellows whose job it appeared was to replace the stones which were knocked off the wall by our passing I later learned that 4 other members of the eld also fell off I witnessed one spectacular somersault off the butt of a horse and into water Upon arriving back at the farm Willy was there to greet us the horses were loaded on the trailer and we were invited in for a Tea After chatting with the members of the eld and enjoying a real Irish Coffee no cream drowning this avour we headed back to the hotel The Dunraven Arms has a unique service they provide special cleaning for hunt clothes boots etc I took advantage of this service and appreciated that I would not have to pack muddy gear They are so wise or would that be experienced I had an amazing day It was exhilarating terrifying and challenging all at the same time This was an experience I will never forget While foxhunting in Ireland is not for the faint of heart it is also something not to be missed There are so many hunts and so many different xtures anyone can be accommodated All you need is a Louis Murphy or a Willy Leahy to help you sort it out The people were all so friendly and the countryside beautiful I consider myself so lucky to have been able to experience it I hope to visit Ireland again

What I do in the off season Riding in Chile written by photos supplied by Fay Jansen W hen we bought our home in Chile I was delighted to nd out that it is a nation of horse riders There is rarely a day when you don t see someone riding a horse along the street Heads of corporations prefer to go out riding rather than play golf with their associates In villages there is usually a horse for every backyard The breed of choice is of course the Chilean horse The Chilean horse is the oldest registered stock breed in the Americas The registry has been closed since 1893 Originating with the Spanish military horses which came to Chile in 1541 the breed was ne tuned over the centuries until it became the horse it is today This horse is usually 14 15HH with low withers and strong legs Chile is a country of mountains Our home is in the foothills so we ride in the mountains all the time It is not fast riding as you are either going up or down but the views are fantastic Horses for the mountains are usually born in the mountains and are allowed to move around freely until they are around 3 yrs old at which time they are taken down to their owners farm and trained The purpose of this is to have a horse that understands mountain terrain and knows how to be safe There are even mountain saddles we use First you put a sheepskin on the horse then a piece of cow hide then the saddle which is little more than a frame and you cinch this down Next you put on another full sheep skin and a second cinch It is extremely comfortable So when you get where you are going in the high Andes you remove all this stuff and you lay out the 2 sheepskins on from injury There are traditional clothes and hats that are worn by rodeo enthusiasts At the National Rodeo Championship competition there will be 14 000 spectators daily in the coliseum for the 3 day event For those who can t attend it is covered live on the radio and television the ground and put your sleeping bag on top One of our favourite places to ride is in the Olivares Valley This is a place at 10 000 ft in the high Andes We go for at least 3 days and camp out under the stars It can be warm 23c during the day but it usually drops close to 0c at night Of course Chileans compete in all equine disciplines Horses feature in all celebrations such as harvest celebration Independence Day and other holidays My favourite is when there is a horse who with his rider dances the national dance of Chile across from a lady dancer Smooth moves The biggest sport in Chile is rodeo It is not like North American rodeo The Chilean horses raised for rodeo come from farms in the south There is more rain in the south so breeders can have large pastures for their horses It also has more at land Top rodeo horses sell for 100 000 Well bred yearlings will go for 10 20 000 The rodeo saddle is similar to a western saddle The stirrups are carved wooden shoes The wood protects the foot TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 51

My Horse Can t Hunt From the Ring to the Field by Emily Leech photos courtesy of Grace Maguire W hen transitioning from the show ring to the hunt eld I was skeptical my mount Bailey a 14 year old off the track thoroughbred OTTB although has an impressive pedigree was spooky somewhat clumsy hard mouthed at times and had a knack for scaring you within an inch of your life Coincidentally Bailey was a an expert at playing human lawn darts Naturally I decided to take Bailey hunting Yes hunting an open area where hobgoblins hide and farming death contraptions such as haybales and cows could be around any corner Now the sensible question to ask is what on earth possessed me to take Bailey hunting It could have been pure psychosis maybe a death wish perhaps but realistically it was because I had what the kids say a YOLO moment it was also cheaper than showing at the Trillium or A circuit level When Bailey heard the hounds rst bay you could feel his heart beating through his chest If he could have Bailey was probably cursing me and questioning MY pedigree For the rst ten minutes or so after we set off on the hunt I was nervous and unsure if this little adventure was going to end well but then a miracle happened A lovely big white horse butt that belonged to a true gentle giant provided Bailey a place to hide behind I advise my friends who consider going out hunting on a new horse to nd and stick with a calm well behaved buddy who will be a good in uence After a while the horse gets a little tired and the herd mentality sets in then you are golden a tried and true hunt horse then any horse has the potential to do it Hunting is for everyone every age gender size and experience level and this applies to the rider as well Hunting offers a range of riding dif culty levels from the adrenaline junkies to the good ol boys out for a ride Hunting has made Bailey a whole new horse at 16 years young He is brave to fences super careful with his feet attentive to cues and has gained unmeasurable self con dence he s no longer scared of his own shadow folks Bailey has become more physically t and balanced than he has been in years The great part about the Toronto and North York Hunt club is how welcoming they are both staff and members look out for you and they are more than happy to teach you about hunting history and etiquette Everyone genuinely cares about the well being of you and your horse and the hunt club quickly becomes extended family even the hounds What are you waiting for Tally ho For those who say my horse can t hunt I m calling you on your bluff I challenge you to look at your horse with new eyes if my older less than graceful neurotic OTTB can become 54 www tnyh horse

THE LEGENDARY CARLOW HOUNDS Continues death it went into serious decline before disbanding in 1966 The Carlow hounds particularly the ST line remains in many of the pedigrees of many well known hounds found in both English North American and Australian packs Tony Leahy MFH of the Fox River Valley Hounds and recent judge at the 2018 Canadian Hound show has this to say about the in uence of the ST line We have 32 couple of hunting hounds hunting in north western Illinois and south west Georgia from July 20 to March 25th about 120 days a year Of the 32 couple 14 couple trace their pedigree back directly to the Carlow ST lines I can say they are exceptional in their work they are very biddable honest accurate and powerful I nd them to be physically and mentally tough and very sound They have always been bred rstly for their working traits so are a great example of form following function that basis has over generations of judicious breeding produced I believe one of the very best working families of hounds in the world I ve had the pleasure of hunting ours in lots of different areas and am always amazed at their ability to adjust to different conditions they always seem to try and persevere through whatever they face I ve seen hounds from these lines in England Ireland Australia and the USA and they have impressed me in all they possess that great trait QUALITY Michael recalls Growing up in Carlow which is Ireland s second smallest county brings back fond memories of Pony Club hunting and old fashioned country life As a young boy the Carlow Pony Club Camp was something we looked forward to all year Camp was a week at one of the large estates in the 56 www tnyh horse The Carlow Huntsman Hounds passing by the Byrne s Gate area where we were given lessons in horsemanship and riding I can still hear one of our riding instructors Brigadier Nunn dressed as you would expect in magni cent hacking attire tweed jacket and boots polished as only an army of cer would have them He would shout from the centre of the ring as we walked trotted and cantered Contact less contact but contact Welsh cross which was obvious the second half he suggested I wouldn t have heard of from a place in Ireland called Carlow I replied that I might know more about them than he did The Captain and I became great friends and he has been our house guest while judging the Canadian Hound Show several times while Laurel and I have stayed with the Captain and PammyJane at Happylands many times My rst day hunting with the Carlow Hounds was with my father when I was thirteen which fortunately was when the famous Mrs Hall The Missus was still hunting It was a local meet where a very nice man Mick Dumphy who worked at Park House Stud the family home for ve generations for fortyseven years The day prior Mick would travel by bicycle and stop all the earths in our country he knew where every earth was located During the Suez Canal crisis I had just started school and petrol gas was rationed it was a treat to be taken to school by Mick in a pony and trap When Mrs Hall passed away no one in the area had the wealth to maintain the hounds The pack was disbanded and I have been told the best hounds were given to her good friend the Duke of Beaufort and to Evan Williams with the famous Limerick Hounds Laurel and I have been fortunate to have hunted with both of these packs Years later I recall on my rst visit to Badminton with Capt Ian Farquhar He was showing Laurel and I hounds as I admired one and asked how he was bred the Captain replied that he was a From Beaufort Limerick and other packs hounds carrying the Carlow blood have been given to packs all over the world as seen in the statement by MFHA President Tony Leahy Little did we know how famous Mrs Halls Carlow Hounds would become it would have made her very proud

Whip Making 101 by Carl Feairs MFH I started whip making in late 2012 early 2013 I got interested in making whips as a result of losing a beautiful antique whip that Janet my wife had given me When I lost that whip I was determined to get a whip that didn t cost much but would serve the purpose I contacted a whip maker in Canada by the name of Steph Normand the proprietor of White North Whips He did not make hunt whips but did make Australian style stock whips so that is what I ordered During my discussions with Steph I became interested in the idea of trying to make a whip Steph pointed me in the direction of the Internet and a whip making forum called Whip Basics Whip parts label photo by Karin McDonald of Beaumirage Digital Photography parachute cord It is a hollow braided material with 7 strands of nylon twine inside it To plait braid a whip the strands inside the parachute cord are pulled out and the braided covering is used to make the thong I tried this material and was not happy with the resulting product I learned a lot from videos on YouTube and from the members at Whip Basics I started out making bullwhips then an Australian style stock whip and all through this time I was working on my own design for a quality hunt whip thong The majority of thongs that I see on hunt whips are very poorly made There are exceptions but most are junk I was determined to have a quality product that would look good crack easily be accurate and last a long time The majority of synthetic whips or thongs on the market are made from Photos by Carl Feairs MFH Parachute cord when plaited is about 1mm thick and about 5 mm wide The Dacron product is about 0 6 mm thick and about 3 mm wide Along with the smaller dimensions the individual threads in the weave are smaller as well When plaited you get a much smoother product It plaits up much tighter and it ows nicer than the paracord I had the material that I wanted Up until about half a year ago I made all of my hunt thongs from this Dacron product I ended up having to switch because the company that made the product decided to stop making it I m not sure what its other use was but I purchased it from a company that makes shing line Photo by Carl Feairs MFH English Eye Carls version the top sample I then learned through a friend at Whip Basics by the name of Tyler Blake about a product that he was using It was made of Dacron polyester and was a much ner product Along came Tyler Blake to the rescue He was in the same boat as me and he had to nd a new supplier fast as I had purchased the last of the supply He found a company that would make a similar product but in nylon not TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 57

WHIP MAKING 101 Continues Dacron We were worried about the change of material but it turns out to be very similar I can t tell the difference in look or performance A typical hunt thong in leather or synthetic would be made up of a belly In a leather thong this would be a tapered rolled piece of leather and in a paracord thong could be a piece of cord lled with bb s or the like This gives the general shape of the thong and a plaited overlay which is the nished outside of the thong My method closely follows how an Australian stock whip of kangaroo hide would be made I start by making a core which is tapered and has a part of it lled with lead shot to give the nished product a bit more weight Over the core I plait the rst plaited belly which further de nes the taper of the thong Over this I plait the second plaited belly which includes the plaited keeper which will attach the thong to the whip handle Up to this point all of these layers have been made from the handle end to the tip Photo by Carl Feairs MFH Fly Wisk and back down to 12 strands at the keeper where the overlay is glued bound and heat fused If you are interested in how I add or drop strands you will have to come by and watch me I don t think I can explain it on paper People ask questions like How many whips have you made The answer is I don t know I have not kept track I am sure I have gone through 30 000 feet or more of cord and a yard and a half thong has somewhere around 300 feet of cord so I have probably passed the 100 mark The other question I get is How long does it take you to make a thong Photo by Carl Feairs MFH White Staff Whip Now I start the nal layer called the overlay This is started from the tip or eye the loop at the tip of the thong This is where my design differs form the traditional hunt thong In any hunt thong other than my design the eye at the tip is back braided in If you look at the loop of other makers there will be a section above the loop that is thicker because the ends of the strands were woven back through the braid to secure the loop This causes a stress point and is why sooner or later that loop always breaks off By starting at the loop I am able to make the loop and then go right into the braiding of the overlay The back braid is eliminated and I get a much more aerodynamic taper The loop is a 4 strand round braid right into an 8 strand round braided thong to start I then add strands as the diameter increases up to 14 strands at the thickest part of the thong 58 www tnyh horse The answer to that is years Though the thongs that I make now are similar to the ones I started out making I believe the last one I made is better than each one that came before I am always learning and getting better even though plaiting is a LOT of repetition The only time I actually clocked my self from start to nish it was 10 hours This was a few years back so I think I am faster than that now I do make orders in Kangaroo hide as well It is lovely material to work with It is very strong about 10 times as strong as a similar size piece of cowhide It feels very nice in hand once it is plaited into a whip belt or whatever one would like to order The drawbacks are it is much more expensive than synthetic I have to order it from Australia When I get the hide it is one irregular kind of triangle shaped piece that is about 75 sq m I then have to cut the hide into strands going around and around the outside of the hide I cut the strands about double the width that I want I then stretch the strand with at least the force I will be pulling when I plait This narrows

Page 59

and lengthens the strand Then I split the strand this is a process to make the strand the same thickness from one end to the other I then resize the strand rst one side is done to make the strand the width of the narrowest point I then resize to my planned width taking this cut from the opposite side which makes the strand a perfect rectangle Then both edges are beveled with a 60 degree angle this allows the strands to tuck in nice and tight to each other when plaited At this point I am ready to plait Whether I make a synthetic or a kangaroo hide hunt whip the design does not change much There is the difference with kangaroo that I can choose the width of the strands to t the diameter of the product With synthetic I have to determine the number of strands that add up to the right number to t the diameter I would like to share some advice on hunt whips and thongs First if you are buying a new leather thong for your whip please check out the workmanship rst If the plaiting is loose at all don t buy it You shouldn t be able to distort its cross section by squeezing it If the leather is dry not oiled don t buy it If it was plaited properly and tight enough it should have had lots of plaiting soap applied during the plaiting process and you should be able to tell that it has been oiled The thong should have a pleasing to the eye taper to it Any lumps or sudden changes in diameter are poor workmanship If you are buying a synthetic thong all the above apply except for the oiling Photo by Carl Feairs MFH Whip Handle repair A bit about maintenance If you have a synthetic thong wash it if you want or do nothing If you have a leather thong you should treat it like the rest of your leather tack Wipe it clean and oil it when it needs it Do not use Neat s foot oil It will make your whip stretch I prefer to use Ko Cao Line leather dressing a little goes a long way If a leather thong is dry and you crack it the damage is done When the end ies off I can try to make it last a little longer but as I have mentioned the damage is done I recommend having a fall on your whip This helps to protect the plaited part of the thong The fall is a piece of parachute cord or leather attached at the tip of the thong and extends to the popper This allows you to adjust the total length of the thong to your liking For me that is the popper just touching or just above the ground when carried the way you like to carry your whip when mounted On the end of that fall you should have a popper This is the business end If you want your whip to crack easily this popper should not be thick Length doesn t matter too much but it needs to be tied off so that a couple of inches at the end can fray I make them from round baler twine They don t last forever but they are free and they don t pick up burrs and other trash like a cotton one does If you crack your whip without a popper on the end then you will quickly destroy your fall if you have a fall If you don t have a fall on your thong and the popper is connected to the loop at the end of the thong if you loose the popper and crack your whip you will be looking for a new thong soon It is that little popper on the end that breaks the sound barrier and gives you that satisfying bang Poppers are disposable I can show you how to make one in a minute Keep a good one on the end of your whip or pay the consequences Whip Handle will be a complete whip in a silent auction coming to a TNYH event in 2018 photo by Karin McDonald of Beaumirage Digital Photography TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 59

The Hunt Horse A Versatile Athlete written by photos supplied by Jan Humphrey A s I write this article I have to wonder if Hunt horses become more versatile because of constantly hunting in different locations over different terrain or if they have to be versatile to adapt to the sport Many years ago a few aristocratic landowners had horses that were kept just to hunt and the main eld were farmers and local business owners whose mounts had a day job working in the elds or as hacks or even in harness Later hunting was used to give working horses and show jumpers a holiday and to bring along young steeple chasers Today hunt horses wear a variety of hats and are often owned by show jumpers dressage riders western riders or are lesson horses and hunt for fun once or twice a week Featured in this article are Parker and Sultan who have both hunted in all three ights with TNYH there are also a few of the horses that have hunted and worked with them included too Parker came to us as a 2 yr old he is a Percheron TB cross Parker is an Parker and Luther TNYH first flight horse with the Governor Generals Horse Guards at the Queens plate exceptionally fast learner kind and willing he drives single and double he works in the riding school and also with the ceremonial units and loves to hunt Sultan was recently purchased as a Hunt horse from another member of TNYH but has quickly adapted to the school and his ceremonial work and is a favorite with the public just call him Mr Cuddles Sultan is a registered Canadian horse and he started life as a Jousting horse Remembrance Day with the York Region first responders four of these horses have hunted on a regular basis or been out for the day with a guest Parker and Sultan on the left and Gypsy Guest hunt horse on the right at the Police Appreciation Night dinner PAN is the main fundraiser for the ceremonial and other police outreach and public displays which are not paid for with taxpayer dollars Parker and Sultan out with the York Region Police Ceremonial Mounted Unit TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 61

Hounds in the House written by photos supplied by Heidi Sauder Mach I t all started with Playboy a Toronto and North York hound puppy I was looking after for the summer As a Puppy Walker for TNYH I foster a foxhound puppy or two to socialize them with other dogs and animals teach them their names introduce them to walking with good manners and to just let them grow up and mature It is often dif cult when it is time for the puppies to leave the farm and go back to the kennels to start their training as you do bond with them over this time It is quite rewarding to see your hound pups out in the eld the next season enjoying their life with the hunt I noticed Playboy had started limping a week or so prior to when he was supposed to return to the kennels I assumed he had strained something playing rough with his sister Passion While she went back to the kennels without him Playboy stayed to rest and recover When it did not get better over time the hunt club had x rays taken It was then discovered that he had OCD a bone growth disorder in his shoulder and would need surgery to correct it Unfortunately even with surgery a hunt career would not be in Playboy s future At this point there had not been a good solution for a hound that cannot or does not want to hunt or for hounds that had a good hunting career but had enough and now would prefer to lay in the shade under a tree than chase things In 2016 with the help of my husband Derek Mach and co director and friend Ron P Adam we started Heidi s Horse and Hound Retirement a registered not for pro t that rehabilitates and rehomes retired hounds and horses hunting dogs and rescues We are privileged to work with hunt clubs such as Toronto and North York Hunt Montreal Hunt Club and Grif th Island We also have been able to help several rescues private owners and other not for pro ts dog rescues To date we have successfully found homes for nine retired hounds and seven rescue hounds It has been such The Pack a positive experience working with and helping these animals Hounds are such a smart agreeable dog that it doesn t take them long to gure out their new purpose and settle right in Our retired hounds are already very well trained We utilize this training when rehabilitating the hounds from kennel to house life They are obedient and good listeners they are friendly and social enjoying the companionship of people and other animals They easily become part of the family A wonderful example of this is Graceful Graceful was retired from the TNYH kennel at the age of 7 She had a Playboy Playboy and Polly Ann full fun life chasing coyote but now on hunt days preferred to stay home and sunbathe We were able to give her the opportunity to live her retired years with the companionship of a family that adores her takes her on adventures has a cozy couch to nap on and all the sunbathing she d like Graceful was even able to help their daughter get over her fear of dogs She was such a good example of how nice our hounds are that they decided two hounds would be better than one In January 2018 they adopted Judge a three year old foxhound from the Montreal Hunt Club Judge had not shown any interest in chasing coyote He much preferred the company of the hunt staff and would spend his career hunting them out instead Judge is now training for a new career of being a service dog for his little girl He is a happy boy sharing his love and companionship with his people and our Gracie Playboy helped start something very special He is a big part of our family giving us so much joy and love He is a wonderful example for all our foster hounds showing them what retired life is all about We are blessed to have other loving families that welcome our hounds into their homes With them and the support and donations from the hunt clubs and members friends and community we are able to continue to help these amazing hounds start the next chapter of their lives Heidi s Horse and Hound Retirement is a registered not for pro t run solely on donations If you are interested in adopting donating or joining us for our next fundraiser please visit us on facebook Fb me HeidisHorseandHoundRetirement TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 63

Straight from the Horse s Mouth by Carolyn Lane H orses have been an integral part of human progress since the beginning of civilization for transportation farm work sports and leisure activities They have shaped our landscape our society and our language Many expressions and idioms found in the English language have evolved from our interaction with horses Here are just a few Crossing the line Don t cross the line or He she crossed the line To go beyond accepted standards of behaviour In foxhunting the route on which the quarry has travelled and left its scent is called the line Riders must be sure not to cross the line and so disrupt the scent for the hounds Photo by Cat Davey Chomping at the bit A horse chews or chomps the bit when it is eager to run For this reason a person who is enthusiastic is said to be doing this Curb your enthusiasm A curb is a type of bit or chain used to assist the rider in communicating with the horse usually to slow it down Beating a dead horse Over emphasising a point A horse that has gone to meet its maker is not going to run faster no matter how much you og it Don t look a gift horse in the mouth Horses teeth grow over time so checking them is a way to ascertain age However doing such a check would be a sign of mistrust toward the giver and might be received as insulting Putting the cart before the horse To do things in the wrong order Given free rein Giving a horse loose free reins allows it to go at its own pace and in its own direction Hold your horses Restrain yourself Tightening the reins stops a horse s forward movements and restricts or redirects it Keep a tight rein Maintaining tight control As when a rider keeps a secure hold on the reins to maintain control of their horse Get off your high horse If you tell someone to get off their high horse you are suggesting they stop behaving in a superior manner It originates from the days when wealthy people could afford to have horses while others had to walk Sitting atop a horse and talking to someone who stood on the ground was a sign of self importance Straight from the horse s mouth Direct from the source If you wanted a tip for making a good horse racing bet you could get good information from the stable lads trainers jockeys or best of all from the horse itself To curry favour with someone Originally from a French poem Roman de Fauvel written in the early 1300s Fauvel was a conniving deceitful and dishonest stallion and its story was a satire on the corruption of social life The phrase curry Fauvel then referred to currying or grooming the horse and was turned by later speakers into curry favour Unbridled enthusiasm Uncontrollable A horse without a bridle is very challenging to control Well in hand A driver of a team of horses pulling a wagon or coach was required to hold various reins leading to all of the horses Since the number of horses could vary from two to forty according to the work being done having a situation well in hand meant the person was an expert at their job There are of course many more such horsey idioms Use Google and see how many more there are and how many you use without even realizing it Do it Right now Seriously I m requesting that you put this magazine down pull out your device and No Well you can lead a horse to water Running roughshod To take action regardless of the damage it causes the horse or others Roughshod is an archaic way of shoeing a horse with nail heads projecting from the shoe to prevent slipping TORONTO AND NORTH YORK HUNT 2018 65
