Mr. Huble lived in a cabin on the banks of the Fraser River.

His friend Mr. Seebach lived nearby. Mr. Huble and Mr. Seebach worked together. They owned a store and trapped animals for fur.

Mr. Huble liked where he lived, but he didn’t have very many neighbours. Sometimes he got lonely. He decided he wanted to get married.

Mr. Huble took a very long trip to visit his family in Ontario.While he was there, he met a woman named Annie.

On New Year’s Day, they went for a sleigh ride and the sleigh tipped over. When they got back up, Mr. Huble asked Annie to marry him!

Mr. Huble brought the new Mrs. Huble and her littledaughter Ada back to live with him in the cabin by the river.

One day, Mrs. Huble said there was a new baby on the way!The family was very happy, but their cabin was too small for them and a little baby!

Mr. Huble decided they needed a bigger house.He and Mr. Seebach went into the woods and started tocut down many big trees.

They used the horses to haul the logs back to the homestead,and Mr. Huble went to work.

Mr. Huble cut all the logs so they were square.

He cut shingles and boards.

He measured.He sawed.He hammered and nailed.

He used the horses to pull their little cabin up to the house to be the kitchen.Mr. Huble worked and worked for a whole year until finally the house was done!

The new house was very big.The outside was white and the trim was painted green.

The bottom floor had a parlour where the family could gather.It had an office where Mr. Huble could work.

And it had a bedroom whereMr. and Mrs. Huble could sleep.

The upstairs had a room for Ada and the new baby, Bertha.There were even three more rooms for company!
