Welcome Back Weekend
rabbi ben herman Rabbi Ben herman Rabbi betshira org New Year New You It has been an exciting two months at Bet Shira Congregation especially as we have been gearing up for the High Holy Days Karina Ariela Leora and I want to thank the four families who hosted us in their intimate home settings to get to know us as well as those who have given of their time energy and resources to help us transition into Bet Shira It has been so wonderful meeting so many of you and we look forward to getting to know more congregants in the coming months This is truly a warm mentschlakh congregation and we are honored to be part of the Bet Shira family Argentinian Cantor Andreas Levy who will also be performing in a concert at Bet Shira the afternoon of Sunday October 6 from 4 00 6 00 p m We will have a Kever Avot cemetery service at Kendall Mount Nebo on Sunday October 6 at 9 00 a m We will be having two family services on Rosh Hashanah Day 1 from 4 30 5 30 p m followed by Tashlich and on Yom Kippur from 3 30 4 30 p m Both Sharon Glick and Sammi Siegel will be doing classes during the break on Yom Kippur Everyone entering the building will need a ticket so please return your membership forms right away We have had amazing turnouts in our Wednesday Parshat HaShavua Thursday breakfast and Saturday Torah Study classes This month we are starting a Thursday evening class on Talmud Berachot We also had a wonderful Shmooze Booze event at Hole in the Wall Pub We have had musical services led by Avron Smolesky and Harvey Kaufman as well as great singing by Cantorial Soloist Jessica Bass Welcome Back Weekend was a major success thanks to our Programming Committee and everyone who attended Keep your eyes open for an invitation to our Havana Nights FUNraiser and Fundraiser on Saturday November 16 Now for some Torah In Hebrew the High Holidays are called hayamim hanoraim which is often translated as Days of Awe The word awe indicates our amazement upon acknowledging the wonders that God created We reflect on how great it is to be alive healthy immersed in nature and seeing beauty God s moral laws themselves promote a society where people can cooperate with one another and live a more peaceful and congenial life When these laws are violated tragedy and destruction of lives occur both personally and communally Which of us would not question some of our own actions in our relationships to others How would God see us in light of our shortcomings A beautiful Midrash from Pesikta Rabbati gives insight into these questions The The High Holy Days are almost upon us You will not want to miss our incredible services featuring
demonstrates that God is striving to reach us as much as we are attempting to return to God and to higher moral principles As we approach the High Holy Days I hope that we will be mindful of the opportunities presented to sincerely return to God and to be in awe of the world in which we live Awe is often thought of as appreciation of monumental wonders but it is also sharing holidays with old friends and connecting with close family even though it may be geographically distant May the upcoming High Holy Days be a time of both reflection on our past year and striving to connect in a deep and meaningful way both to God and to each other Karina Ariela Leora and I wish you a shana tova u metuka a happy healthy and sweet New Year Rabbi Ben Herman rabbi ben herman Midrash describes a prince who was a hundred days journey away from his father the king The prince had distanced himself because he felt that some of the choices he had made offended his father and believed that his father would never forgive him The prince s friends implored him to return to his father but the prince was fearful as his life was far removed from his father s expectations I cannot return the prince said as I do not have the strength to face my father The prince s father sent word to him saying come back as far as you are able and I will go the rest of the way to meet you In this parable the prince represents the children of Israel and the father represents God Our Sages suggest that we the children of Israel might be hesitant of returning to God especially if we have committed some major sins in the past year However God comforts us by telling us that we should do as much as we can to come back and God will go the rest of the way to meet us This is the essence of teshuvah returning to God and it
Jason timmons President betshira org Moving Forward Summer is over children are back in school and synagogue life at Bet Shira is buzzing The energy brought by Bet Shira s new Rabbi Rabbi Benjamin Herman has reinvigorated our community and is preparing us for a new year The High Holy Days are upon us and the symbolism of these holidays where we are given an opportunity to close out the old chapters of the previous year atonement for those actions thoughts and words we wish we could take back forgive others and ourselves and ultimately begin the journey of a new year I cannot think of a more appropriate analogy for our Congregation The journey upon which our long and storied history has taken our Congregation now presents us with the opportunity to write the new chapters of our future and decide where the journey will take us Like all great journeys the experience is richest when shared with others This will be the year when Bet Shira Congregation embarks down the path to growing our community reconnecting with Bet Shira and ultimately endowing Conservative Judaism in South Miami Dade for generations to come The journey will require the dedication and fortitude of everyone in our synagogue and will require commitments of time money and recognition where no donation of either is ever too small remember that every journey is covered one step at a time How can you be a part of this journey I m glad you asked For Bet Shira to thrive it requires your constant involvement If you have not taken the time to give to fair share now is the time If you have given to Fair Share I want to thank you and ask if you would consider increasing your donation If you do not sit on a committee there is no better way to strengthen your connection with Bet Shira Getting involved will enrich your experience build and strengthen relationships and ultimately create a stronger more vibrant Bet Shira Lastly I would like to address the security of Bet Shira during the High Holy Days The need to address issues of security around the High Holy Days are difficult and painful for me I wish the need to think of these issues did not exist however several months ago a Security Task Force was convened by your Executive Committee and the Board of Directors This Task Force chaired by Andy Nierenberg has listened to the congregation sought input from local law enforcement and other security experts and has been working tirelessly to create an environment that will be secure without being overly intrusive On behalf of my wife Melissa my children Logan Haley Gabriel your Executive Committee your Board of Directors and Bet Shira Staff I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Healthy New Year May it be filled with good health lots of family and beautiful experiences that create lifelong memories Shana Tova Jason K Timmons President Jason timmons president

Director of jewish learning rrittner betshira org Start Anew We are taught in Pirkei Avot 1 6 Joshua ben Perachyah and Nittai the Arbelite received the Torah from them Joshua ben Perachyah said Provide for yourself a RAV and get yourself a CHAVER and judge every man towards merit But what is a Rav Rav is translated as Rabbi So Rav can be a Rabbi a teacher a mentor a guide maybe even a friend It is someone to sit and examine text with to bounce ideas off of to struggle through new concepts with to learn from as well as a person for you to teach So true is this for Chaver A chaver is translated as friend To think of the word friend is to think of a person that you share ideas and stories with you confide in and learn from you bounce ideas off of and to whom you provide the same services in return A friend can be a teacher a mentor a guide and maybe a rav In many ways the two words RAV and CHAVER can be interchangeable Our traditional way of study is born in this text we traditionally learn in chavruta Chevruta two people arguing meaning sharpening each other s sense of understanding providing different viewpoints to come to new ideas The partners guide and mentor each other They act as both chaver and rav interchangeably It is a loud and rambunctious way of active learning This year at the JLC what is old is new We are returning to this traditional method of study to advance our students prayer learning Every student will be placed with a partner to practice their Hebrew prayers Together they will work through the prayer assisting each other in mastery of the texts When they feel ready the partners together will make way to their teacher facilitating the learning groups and each will demonstrate the mastery of the prayer In this way students will learn together and succeed in feeling more comfortable with our prayers In Judaica we will continue to study using Halacha and Torah to determine how decisions are made in day to day life As our students have asked we will begin to study how and why we pray as well as how we connect and understand God Kavanah intention will become a focus of our Judaic learning and understanding as students will grapple with what it means to live Jewishly in today s world As we all enter the High Holy Days the JLC challenges everyone to think about what it Kavanah means what does it mean to pray with intention As you go through the makzor don t simply go through the motions of the prayer but consider what the prayers mean how they connect with the world today how the words on the page in any language when said with intention have true purpose Think about and question the text When you go leave the service feel free to leave with more questions Find someone to be your Rav and Chaver Sit with the person and discuss any questions you have about the prayers about praying with intention or simply to converse and reflect Enjoy the learning and the comradery Start anew with something that is very old the idea of finding a rav and acquiring a chaver Ren e B Rittner MSW MAJS MAJE M Ed JLC Dates Sunday September 8 15 22 October 6 13 27 October 21 1st grade Alef students receive mini Torahs on Erev Simchat Torah Wednesday September 4 11 18 25 October 2 16 23 30 October 27 1st Tallit and Tefillin November 3 Family ZooMiami Trip Ren e B Rittner Ren e B Rittner
