THE MESSENGER GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER VOLUME 109 ISSUE 5 MAY 2020 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK HOW ARE YOU It is the question we know to ask I find myself asking it when I see someone on Zoom How are you But for many of us that is not an easy question to answer right now Maybe we can t even quite put into words how we are right now We feel okay and yet we don t know why we keep snapping at our loved ones or housemates We are good and yet we don t know why we are so tired all the time despite not doing much of anything What many of us don t realize is that what we are experiencing at this moment is a collective trauma At the very least things around us are changing at such a steep pace that our human bodies and minds can t adapt that quickly Most of us can t hold as much uncertainty as we are being asked to right now When that happens it is hard to sort out our emotions We are fine really truly fine and also F I N E Freaked out Insecure Neurotic and Emotional The other night during our pandemic bible study we read the very familiar Psalm 23 which begins The Lord is my shepherd We were talking about how we read biblical passages before the pandemic and how we are reading and hearing them now One thing I shared with the group is that prior to the pandemic I suppose I always imagined that life went in cycles where we were either in a stressful difficult sad period the valley of the shadow of death or in an easy restful recharging period by still waters Yes I understood that there was some overlap that you could find joy in the midst of a season of sorrow and there could be sorrow in the midst of joy but I suppose I thought most of us at any given time could identify if we were in the valley of the shadow of death or by those still waters During this pandemic however I ve not fully been able to identify where I am and perhaps you can relate What s more after some reflection I recognize that I don t feel that way because I am somehow in between those places It would be more accurate to say I feel that way because I am so fully in both places simultaneously Nothing could describe the grief filled news cycles or the fearful environment of being surrounded and hemmed in by this virus better than the valley of the shadow of death And yet for many of us this has also been a season of pausing getting back to our art or our favorite book hearing from our loved ones more than we usually do Some of us are praying and meditating more than we have in years and others of us are watching silly cat videos for the 100th time but finding God is somehow in our giggles of delight I woke up the other morning to news that I would need to home school my kids for at least another month i e that I won t have the village around me that every parent relies on that the death toll in the United States has more than tripled since we tolled our bell for Covid 19 victims on Easter 1 and is now higher than the death toll in the whole Vietnam War that things are looking grim for the economy My heart was heavy An hour later I found myself on a bike ride with my spouse and kids riding along the clearer and stiller than I have ever seen Tampa Bay watching dolphins pelicans and sting rays play in the water It is hard to tell what feels more surreal the stillness of life or the heaviness of it But perhaps that is why the valley of the shadow of death and the still waters both find their way into the same Psalm because sometimes we need both We need to remember that our God is not exclusively a fair weather God nor a crisis only God and that we can t determine God s presence or absence with us by either of those circumstances but instead must remember that God s goodness and mercy chases after us in both circumstances suffering or refreshment One of the questions we ask each week in our beloved community groups is where are you seeing God right now We push one another to strain through the fog of fear and suffering to see God with us and also not to fail to look for God in the easy still moments I wonder if you are looking and paying attention to where God is in your life right now and how God is guiding you through this time If you are wanting to explore this more to use this season as an opportunity for spiritual growth and development I encourage you to join us for the Beloved Community Groups I am also offering during this time to meet via phone or zoom for personal faith coaching If you want to take me up on either of those opportunities you just need to reach out via phone or email 603 422 2969 pastor goodsam gmail com Peace Pastor Jen

2020 HURRICANE SEASON PREDICTED TO BE ACTIVE The 2020 hurricane season begins June 1st and promises to be a very active one The possibility of experiencing a major hurricane and pandemic at the same time is a very real concern for our state A FEMA official called this as our nightmare scenario The 2020 hurricane season will follow four unusually active years for the number of storms and the ferocity displayed by these storms Six category 5 storms have formed over the past four years 2016 s Matthew followed by 2017 s Irma and Maria 2018 s Michael and 2019 s Dorian and Lorenzo Climate trends show a cooling over the next several months in the equatorial Pacific which is consistent with a La Nina pattern This weather pattern provides low upper winds and warmer waters very conducive for storm formation The El Nino weather pattern on the other hand creates wind shears that inhibit formation of tropical cyclones All weather forecasts at this time are predicting the La Nina pattern will prevail during the entire 2020 hurricane season Two major weather forecasts have been issued to date that are calling for a seriously problematic storm season Accuweather issued a forecast calling for 14 to 18 named storms of which 7 to 9 will be hurricanes and 2 to 4 will be major category 3 or higher storms An average storm season in comparison calls for 12 named storms 6 hurricanes 3 and 3 major hurricanes Colorado State University Hurricane Center s most recent forecast predicts 14 named storms 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes which will be category 3 or higher The current pandemic has stretched emergency services to the limit in some areas Local state and federal plans for weather emergencies have to be adjusted in case social distancing remains in effect during the storm season There are many other factors which have to be taken into consideration if the pandemic continues throughout the storm season In June we will hopefully have a clearer picture as to what new guidelines will be implemented to deal with a storm pandemic scenario In late June will distribute a Disaster Preparedness Guide for the Good Sam community The 2020 Guide may be in digital form due to the current situation we are experiencing Submitted by Clarence Wilkinson

MORE FROM THE PASTOR S DESK WE WON T BE GOING BACK TO NORMAL As I wrote my Newsletter article news broke that Florida will start slowly reopening in the next month Pinellas County will start with a soft open of beaches and some other the open air gathering spots Many of us may be starting to wonder when we will be back to worship in the physical sanctuary and what it will look like when we get back Truth is I have no clear timeline to share with you We are a predominantly 55 congregation which means we have a lot of high risk folks to worry about Don t be surprised if our reopening dates do not exactly line up with the Governor s Our Session is taking this month by month in some cases week by week Right now school is closed through the end of the school year end of May and so we will likely be closed at least that long as well Most guidelines suggest that new cases of Covid 19 should be on the decline for at least 2 weeks before reopening Of course this will be hard to discern with such limited testing and accurate data available We also know from experts to expect that we may come back to our physical spaces and ease up on social distancing and then have to return to our virtual way of gathering if there is a resurgence of the virus in the winter Please also don t be surprised if the way we do worship and church looks very different when we return at least until there is a vaccine and perhaps beyond You may have already guessed that things like physically passing the peace or holding hands at closing circle will go by the wayside You may have already guessed that we will continue offering online ways to enter our worship service for those who are at risk and don t feel safe physically gathering with us But there may be much bigger changes Studies have shown for instance that congregational singing is an excellent way to transmit the virus in aerosol form and that the space needed around a singing person pushing breath out of their lungs much more forcefully than just in average talking is at least 20 feet not the usual 6 feet Will that mean we no longer sing together or have a choir I don t know but that is looking like a possibility at least in the short term What about seating To follow the 6 feet rule will we need to pull the chairs way apart spread them all around the sanctuary Probably Will we still have a fellowship social hour after church or will that kind of physical nearness be out of the question at least for a time We will have to weigh that out Certainly we will need new cleaning protocol and probably a new team of volunteers on Sunday mornings who go around and wipe down door handles sanitize surfaces in bathrooms multiple times while we meet etc And if we can t keep spaces clean enough we may have to not use as many For instance if our children s spaces can t be thoroughly sanitized between uses including all of the toys that kids put in their mouths or touch with their hands we may not be able to send the kids to those spaces or we may have to greatly reduce the amount of toys and supplies in each space And what about our most sacred rituals like baptism and communion will we figure out a way to continue these practices together I m not sure right now So please understand that we are not simply waiting to return to normal right now and perhaps we shouldn t Many churches are taking this opportunity to re evaluate how they have done church and view this as an opportunity to reimagine and reinvent Many are asking Have we placed too much emphasis on our once a week in person worship Is a church without walls or beyond the 6 walls more what Jesus hopes for us Would smaller gatherings more akin to house churches actually serve us better and also at this present moment be the best way to love our neighbors and keep down the spread of this virus Does church staffing need to shift away from prioritizing those weekly worship gatherings to doing more to create an online presence community or foster equip justice and mercy work These are good questions to ask ourselves and in many ways they are exciting Trends have shown traditional worship has been on the decline for some 50 years in our country and globally Theologians like Phyllis Tickle have suggested that every 500 years the church universal must have a yard sale reinvent itself and be resurrected in some new form if it wants to continue to be relevant and meaningful That this has been true historically and will need to be true now It has been about 500 years since the last major upheaval the reformation so it is time Perhaps this virus has thrust us into such a moment as that What can you do Pray for the leadership of Good Samaritan as they wrestle with these hard decisions dream and try to keep everyone safe Participate in our online worship and community building opportunities No those are not perfect but your presence with us is what makes these gatherings meaningful You can also continue to support our justice and mercy work either financially or by volunteering your time and energy Further you can be engaged in your own justice and mercy work be a good neighbor to your neighbors call to checkin on our shut ins or others you know contact your legislators to advocate for the vulnerable the poor and the most just policies watch and listen to discover who the helpers are in our community and support or join them in whatever ways you can We may not be meeting in our church building but we are still the church Peace Pastor Jen

MAKING ONLINE SERVICES POSSIBLE Our new normal for a time is online worship seeing others in little glowing boxes on our computer screen Some listen to the services on land lines that do not offer us a glimpse of their faces but we can still hear their voices if they want to share It has been wonderful to find a new way to see others and be almost in the same room But this transition has not come easy especially for some who have felt so challenged by the technology Thankfully many of you have put forth the effort and we have all been rewarded with your presence It has also not come easy for those behind the scenes working the knobs and wires Lisa Ware has met Gregory each Sunday at Good Sam and set him up at the piano to play Until just recently he did not have the right kind of microphone needed to pick up both his voice and piano at the same time Lisa has also moved the computer around to try to get the best sound possible Debbie Rasmussin has also been helping Pastor Jen each service to try to keep the correct screen with the prayer or song that is relevant keeping microphones muted and unmuted when needed Recently Jean Adams started helping with changing out the screens so that Debbie could focus on the microphones and making sure anyone who is speaking is unmuted This is important because if everyone is unmuted all the time we get a lot of background noise and feedback Pastor Jen has had to make adjustments to her sermons to make them more relevant to the times as well as more appropriate for online services She has tried to involve others in the service by having some of the readings and prayers shared by others but also trying to not allow the services to become too disjointed or long It is especially hard for those who are on land lines and cannot view the screen because they are not only unable to see our faces and feel the connections that all of us do but they also only have the ability to hear what is being said and unable to see who is speaking There are so many moving parts to online worship and those who are driving it are constantly trying to find ways to make the service flow more smoothly and have less distractions Pastor Jen always welcomes suggestions and comments so feel free to contact her with those Thank you to each person who works so hard on Sunday and around each online event that we have There is a lot going on Look for opportunities to join with others by checking out the ads in this issue of the Messenger BE SURE TO STAY CONNECTED MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR VIRTUAL MEETINGS WITH PHONE OR COMPUTER ARE AVAILABLE 10
