GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH THE MESSENGER VOLUME 107 ISSUE 12 DECEMBER 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK ADVENT A SEASON HOPE A media campaign began several years back directed at LGBT youth Their slogan It Gets Better Adult LGBT individuals recorded videos of themselves talking about how much has changed in their lifetime legally and socially and tried to reassure the younger generation that as they got older things would certainly get better for them It was a desperate cry to teens committing suicide at alarming rates 1 5 3 times more often than their straight cis gender peers1 to hold onto optimism However as hatred is on the rise blatant bigotry racism and sexism seemingly more and more publicly acceptable and policies such as those protecting trans students from bullying in public schools are being eliminated I wonder if such optimistic platitudes fall a little flat this year In fact this December I think optimism the belief that things are getting or will get better seems out of reach for a great many people whether we are talking about curbing global warming achieving some semblance of world peace embracing difference closing the growing gap between the wealthy and the poor or even things closer to home like solving homelessness in our own community healing relationships with those relatives on the other side of the political aisle or overcoming our own loneliness grief or fears about aging We may know that the literal shortening and darkening of days which closes in on us this time of year will soon enough pivot into brighter longer days but we wonder perhaps rightly so if it is just wishful thinking a pipe dream to believe anything else will get brighter But maybe optimism is not what we need I ve been reading about the differences between hope and optimism It turns out that even though we often use them as synonyms they are not the same According to Dr David Henderson of the Center for Courage and Renewal Optimism claims everything will be all right despite reality It is in a sense a delusion that chooses to look at reality positively no matter whether it really is or not That s why often in difficult times optimism feels phony at best and a lie at worst Whereas Hope he says accepts reality the poverty of spirit that underlies all fear instigates all tragedies bureaucracy and institutional inertia Hope doesn t ignore external realities it simply knows the human heart s capacity to withstand those realities and it trusts in the inexhaustible power of our hearts to choose love over fear Henderson argues from a psychologist s perspective that When optimism gets ground up by reality hope will go toe to toe with reality because of a heart that simply refuses to quit 2 As people of faith we might come at the concept of hope from a slightly different perspective Hope is not just about the resilience of the human heart We hope because we trust in a God who will not quit and whose love possesses the inexhaustible power to triumph over fear and evil Part of why people are so drawn 1 to Jesus is because he is the embodiment both of God s love refusing to quit and the human capacity with God s help to choose love even in the most dire of circumstances We are drawn to the authenticity of his story precisely because it doesn t sugar coat things or paste a fake positive outlook over a dark reality It is brutally honest The Christ child is born into a harsh world of oppression injustice violence and corruption From the start his life will be threatened From the start he and his parents will be rejected The dark realities of the world won t relent or change or improve He will die an awful death and yet he will persevere and love will win I don t know about you but I sure could use some hope this year I don t need more plastic painted on facades of Christmas I need Emmanuel God with us I don t need the dim twinkle of Christmas lights or even thousands of them no matter how much they might dazzle the eye No I need the real light of the world who can push back a more substantial darkness than just the darkness of night I don t need treats to put a sugar coating over life and add to my waistline I need a bread of life that will actually nourish me into health Don t get me wrong It is not that there is anything particularly wrong with any of the Christmas celebrations around me nor that the secular world has launched some kind of war on Christmas with their traditions and rituals It is simply that I want I need something deeper than that I need the rich well of life and love that is behind all the Christmas symbolism According to Dr C R Snyder one of the key hope researchers in the field of psychology two of the big differences between hope and continued on page 9

FROM THE PASTOR S DESK continued from page 1 optimism are that hope possesses a sense of agency to bring about the change for which we long and a clear sense of a pathway to get there 3 For many centuries people referred to Jesus as The Way a title by which Jesus self identified There has long been a sense that following Jesus his love and his way of living is the pathway to what we long for but which would otherwise feel impossible and that his spirit dwelling within us is what opens and enables that capacity So the Christmas story is not about false phony optimism the pasting over of the darkness of reality with glittery twinkly positivism or offering empty platitudes to each other like Don t worry it will get better It is about the birth of the way a real way into our deepest desires and longings and the power to get there That is what brings a rich deep honest hope Unfortunately many people have experienced Christians to be people of a fake phony almost magical optimism that denies reality rather than deeply honest people of profound hope So this year if you want to bring the hope of Christ to those around you Stop nostalgically pining for 1950 s expressions of Christmas as if those were somehow more Christian Stop patting yourself on the back for rebelling against the war on Christmas by pushing your Merry Christmas on those who wish you Happy Holidays as if that will somehow put the Christ back in Christmas and not just harm and disrespect those of other faiths or no faith Stop offering empty platitudes or putting on a smile even when you are dying inside Stop glossing over the pain of the world Don t let your message simply be everything will be okay You will look like a fool when it is not Instead start with honesty about where you re at and where people are at this year the heartache the despair the pain the grief the loneliness the desperation Never forget that desperation can be a gateway into hope just as it was for all those desperate parents who moved mountains to bring their children to Jesus for healing This year follow the way of Jesus Show people with your life and your love that there is a way out of this darkness tipping us into despair not by simply glossing over it or pretending it doesn t exist not by simply hanging Christmas lights on it or trying to cure it through the consumption of gifts or food that bring only a momentary comfort and distraction Show them show yourself that there is something more real and honest Show them the power of love to transform the dark Peace Pastor Jen Suicide Prevention Resource Center 2008 Suicide risk and prevention for lesbian gay bisexual and transgender youth Newton MA Education Development Center Inc 1 Henderson David Http www couragerenewal org optimism vs hope Http www couragerenewal org Center for Courage and Renewal 16 Jan 2013 Web 20 Nov 2018 2 Snyder C R and Shane J Lopez Handbook of Positive Psychology Oxford Oxford UP 2005 Print 3 9 ALL SAINTS DAY Sunday November 4 Good Sam commemorated All Saints Day honoring those from our congregation who have passed away during this past year The following members and friends were remembered Kaycee Wargo Dick Gaylord Marcia Smith Thea Pruyne Wally Shearburn Jack Wilcox Andrea Nechondom Hall Various congregants were asked to share a little about each person and it was special to hear the stories and memories After the service we gathered out in the Memorial Garden for a short time honoring the three whose names have been added to the memorial plaque most recently Brian and Claudia Smith Dianne Checque and Dick Gaylord Members of the Gaylord family attended service and were present for this time of reflection Submitted by Carolyn Woodard
