PROJECTS I Buysse HENNEAULAAN For the past two years BESIX and BESIX Infra have been working to provide a greener and more pleasant living environment for both humans and animals around the Brussels Ring They are renovating the traffic complex on the Henneaulaan where they are replacing the very outdated and unsafe Henneau bridge over the Ring and are upgrading the connections to it Inside Magazine 116 14 With the demolition of the old bridge behind us it was time for INSIDE to stop by to meet Christoph Klingeleers Project Manager at BESIX and Gunter Van Gaever Project Leader at BESIX Infra Gunter agrees Indeed negotiations go The greatest concern for the client throughout much smoother because we share the the project is keeping the nuisance to road same BESIX culture There is a lot of trust users as low as possible In other words between BESIX and BESIX Infra and any traffic must always be able to move in all difficulties are quickly resolved directions except for a number of limited time periods To achieve this the project has been divided into multiple phases MULTIMODAL APPROACH on the bridge the teams are placing various The project is part of the broader vision of the wildlife tunnels under the access roads In this Werkvennootschap Flemish governmental way animals will be able to safely move from organisation that supports complex mobility one side of the Ring to the other projects in Flanders to increase the quality of life in the vicinity of the Brussels Ring Mobility and multimodal accessibility in and around Brussels receive the necessary attention here The old Henneau bridge over the Ring The new bridge will be no less than twice as wide with space for all users to cross safely OPTIMISATION AND COOPERATION safety problem for vulnerable road users BESIX and BESIX Infra were chosen to replace the old bridge with a new one which will be twice as wide There will be separate pedestrian pathways bus and cycle lanes and an ecopassage which is a green strip for animals Christoph tells us BESIX Infra is also upgrading the connections to the various access roads and takes care of the surrounding green areas Furthermore the project promotes better harmony between the Ring and the adjacent nature The valuable but fragmented green zones are being upgraded and made more accessible to local residents and workers Gunter explains Attention is also being paid to local fauna In addition to the eco passage Circularity is also central to the project Already in the tender stage we were looking All the earth excavated to make way for the for alternative optimised solutions Christoph new bridge is reused elsewhere on the says In this way we came up with an project such as for the embankments alternative schedule for demolishing the old explains Gunter As a result part of the bridge requiring the Ring to be closed for just material is immediately available and fewer 16 hours instead of the 49 hours the client trucks are needed Less traffic and better for had originally planned the environment For the installation of the second half of the In addition the old bridge will be given a new bridge the teams also came up with an new lease of life Once deconstructed we alternative solution For this operation the are crushing it into rubble that is collected bridge half must first be driven under the and recycled for building new roads already installed bridge half and then pushed Christoph concludes to the correct height was in poor condition and presented a major Thus high time for a new one CIRCULARITY AND SUSTAINABILITY We came up with the idea of dividing the Various wildlife tunnels are being installed to ensure a safe crossing for local fauna operation in two phases We will first drive the In June 2022 we installed the first half of the will temporarily park it on a site next to the Ring bridge right next to the old bridge in just one instead of on the Ring like planned by the client night says Christoph Meanwhile the old where we push it to the right height while traffic bridge has been demolished and the first stays enabled on the Ring When that s done segments for the second half of the new we ll bring it to its final location in a second bridge have also arrived on site The actual phase says Christoph Thanks to this solution Henneaulaan is located on the installation is scheduled for June next year traffic on the Ring will experience eight hours ight path to Brussels Airport and with the final delivery due in April 2024 less disruption Given the many phases and the was heavily bombed during the emphasis on good traffic flow it is difficult to Second World War As a result a Scan the QR code to relive the solve the puzzle of finding optimisations bomb investigation had to be installation of the first bridge half This calls for a very good coordination carried in June 2022 between the civil engineering and road second bridge half under the first bridge half and works explains Christoph However thanks to the one stop shop with BESIX and BESIX Infra this is no problem Already in the tender stage we were looking for optimised solutions That way we came up with an alternative schedule for demolishing the old bridge requiring the Brussels Ring to be closed for just 16 hours instead of the 49 hours the client had originally planned Christoph Klingeleers Project Manager at BESIX The one stop shop between BESIX and BESIX Infra bears fruit Thanks to mutual trust and the shared BESIX culture negotiations are much smoother and any difficulties are quickly resolved Gunter Van Gaever Project Leader at BESIX Infra DID YOU KNOW out to eliminate any dangers Luckily no bombs were found and the project could be carried out without much delay 15 Inside THE MIDDLE EAST content This opens opportunities for PPPs PPPs opportunities participate to tenders Peter Let s not dwell too long on what on waste to energy projects We need to everyone knows The pandemic and the war continue to adapt and position ourselves in Ukraine have seriously disrupted the more and more as investor and asset supply chains and price raises have put an manager It also implies that we need to additional strain on the players of the sector partner up more often with the top tier local What is interesting is that this creates real players as authorities clearly want to build opportunities for BESIX as strong brand in up their own capabilities This is the case on the region First the competitive landscape the two museums in Abu Dhabi Peter I m very much a people person so Throughout the decades we have actively contributed to the development of the Peninsula and left numerous traces in the skyscraper filled skylines of the region Inside Magazine 116 16 The pandemic dealt a double blow to the region s economy driving down oil prices and reducing the countries oil revenues and significantly impacting the non oil economy that was dependent on tourism and trade How is this in uencing our business We asked our duo at the helm Jean Pol Bouharmont and Peter Lembrechts especially for us as we have been on the front foot in this area for the last 10 years on water treatment projects and more recently has been further reduced because of various have an enormous impact in many countries LOOKING FORWARD WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS ARE WE LOOKING AT Jean Pol Our strategy is clear we focus on issued by public authorities only and we focus on infrastructure projects in the civil marine environmental and industrial domains Next to this we will keep answering present for iconic projects like high rises and complex buildings while being extremely cautious about contract conditions We favour partnerships or Early Contractor Involvement schemes through our realisations here This level of strong reputation is priceless and should make us all sincerely proud Jean Pol I agree with Peter and I ll go further I d dare saying that our human fabric makes or breaks a project The way managers support coach accompany their teams is the key to success We are recognised for our focus on solving problems to expedite progress and collaborate with all stakeholders to deliver to the satisfaction of our Clients That s our strength And nothing rejoices me more than seeing colleagues moving inside the group because this internal mobility participates to the IS THIS STRATEGY APPLICABLE TO THE WHOLE GCC REGION OR JUST THE UAE privatisation of economic and social assets as well as for bringing oil gas projects to Jean Pol For the moment subcontractor active in a while we will target marine life Third we start to see willingness from management is giving us a headache Many projects first because these are projects LAST QUESTION FOR JEAN POL HOW DO YOU COMBINE YOUR POSITION HERE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WITH YOUR ROLE IN AUSTRALIA clients to have a serious discussion on risk subcos have been hit hard by the economic where we have strong expertise and usually Jean Pol Actually I find it refreshing to allocation early involvement and commercial turmoil have become insolvent or gone healthy margins We also favour entering a swap between two regions It s keeping me conditions We see signs for optimism bankrupt But we rely heavily on them for our new country through PPPs where we can sharp Times are challenging everywhere ongoing operations Hence it s crucial we be investor and or in charge of O M we but the way we adapt to the new reality is select our subcos with care we manage are not interested in doing only EPC In the different It s enriching to steer this change them closely and keep vigilant in the day to end what matters is that risks must be on both sides it gives me ideas and helps day operations with them shared equally for us to be interested me see solutions rather than problems Second we see a renewed interest for Jean Pol Authorities are looking actively for international investment while looking at the same time to increase in country value Peter This is valid for the whole region If we look at a country where we haven t been Note from the editor Gulf Cooperation Council We are the proud builders of the UAE and Qatar We can only come back to an era of success Jean Pol Bouharmont Managing Director BESIX Middle East maximisation of our strengths WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR POINT OF ATTENTION FOR THE MOMENT bankruptcies
