January 31 2020 SET THE STAGE 4 38PM This Parsha introduces the first mitzvah given to Klal Yisrael The month of Nisan is the first month of the year Chazal deduce the mitzvah of Kiddush HaChodesh from these psukim A witness who sees the new moon comes to Beis Din and testifies about what he has seen Based on the testimony of the witnesses the Beis Din declares whether or not it is Rosh Chodesh The establishment of Rosh Chodesh then determines the dates of the Yomim Tovim At the beginning of Rashi quotes in the name of that this is the very first mitzvah Klal Yisrael were commanded to perform and as such it would be reasonable to be begin the Torah with this mitzvah Although as Rashi further explains Hashem chose to start the Torah with the status of this mitzvah as a beginning remains A beginning always sets the stage and foundation for what follows What is the unique message of Kiddush HaChodesh that makes it set the stage for all of Taryag Mitzvos The Meforshim explain that there exists nothing more predictable than the lunar and solar astronomical cycles Sunrise on a specific date will exactly match the time of sunrise an exact number of years earlier A lunar month will always be 29 days 12 hours and 793 parts of an hour It is an exact science If so why does the Torah obligate this mitzvah The Meforshim answer that the purpose of this mitzvah is not for its informative value We perform this mitzvah in order to fulfill This then is the foundation all mitzvos We should not assume that there necessarily exists a practical reasoning for performing a particular mitzvah We are performing these mitzvos as a way to subjugate our minds and bodies to do This lesson was critical to impart to Klal Yisrael on the threshold of their becoming and preparing to accept the February 3 Hamilton STEM Fair 12 45 2 15 PM February 13 February 19 Winter break February 20 Regular classes resume March 23 Torah Academy 38th Anniversary Dinner The bulletin is sponsored in honor of our mechanchim and educators by Rabbi Ochs to 2G for finishing Thank you Miss Gould to 3G for finishing Thank you Mrs Posy to 7G for finishing Thank you Mrs Ochs We are so proud of all the boys in grades 3 8 for their extra mishnayos learning during the month of Teves for Chemdas Yosef Mazel tov to the raffle winners Grades 3 5 Shlomo Feldman Ephraim Kashnow Ezra Klompas grand prize and Tzvi Posy Grades 6 8 Aron Bier Yehuda Feuerstein Yisroel Leib Greene Chaim Mordechai Moshe Rodkin and Noam Youshaei grand prize winner Thank you again to the Halpern family for sponsoring the special program Also a big thank you to an anonymous donor who sponsored special raffle prizes for extra raffles for next month Perakim for Chodesh Teves 3B 72 4B 122 5B 170 6B 477 7B 483 8B 193 Torah Academy Total thus far 1517 perakim of mishnayos What a fantastic accomplishment The Williston STEM fair took place on Wednesday Boys from grade 2B and up displayed their knowledge of the subject of their studies Grade 7 and 8 had a bridge design challenge Using 50 pieces of balsa wood 1 8 x 1 8 x 36 and 4 oz of glue Teams had to build a bridge that can hold the most weight Two teams tied for first place with bridges holding 26lbs Chaim Mordechai Moshe Rodkin Binyomin Septimus and Mendel Meyers in 7th grade and Yitzy Gould Ahron Fireman and Nachie Halpern in 8th grade 8th grade G O girls have launched a new initiative called A Positive Vision Girls submit situations and describe how they dealt with them positively Submissions are included in a weekly raffle Thank you to Mrs Lisa Marshall for speaking to our 8th grade girls about her career as an attorney as part of our career path education unit
