GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH THE MESSENGER VOLUME 107 ISSUE 9 SEPTEMBER 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK LETTERS TO MY CHILDREN PEACE Dear Beloved Community As you read in the last messenger over the next few months I will be letting you overhear letters I have written to my children In truth I have written them with you and the current state of our world very much in mind but I am not addressing them to you for two simple reasons sometimes as preaching teacher Fred Craddock puts it we hear the gospel better when we overhear it and sometimes we or at least I express it best when we address it to children we love Jesus often let his disciples overhear essentially his letters to the one he referred to as his parent his Abba and he spoke perhaps most profoundly about the kin dom of God when children were in his presence So glean from these letters whatever is relevant and helpful for your life PEACE Dear children of mine who know peace better than any adult I know When the oldest two of you were born my mom your grandma gave us a board book called You Are My I Love You Many nights I read to you the words I am your quiet place you are my wild Yes you are sometimes the wild and the chaotic in my world but the first time I held each of you it was like traveling back in time to a peace I had long since forgotten Jacob you were three weeks old Respiratory Therapists had to carefully lift your tiny intubated wired body onto my chest so that we could have skin toskin kangaroo time You stretched only from my sternum to my belly button Of all the storms in my life your birth and the emotional roller coaster of your NICU stay is the worst I have ever weathered Nothing inside me was calm They had told me that you would sense my stress So I tried with everything in me to quiet my anxieties Nothing worked until I held you our hearts pressed together We both needed to be one another s quiet place for plenty around us was wild Over the coming months of your stay sometimes I would forget during the hours and hours of skin to skin time to tap into that peace My body would be still and look peaceful but my thoughts would start to race in aimless panic and worry I would fail to be present in the moment Your little body could sense it Your oxygen levels would drop until your monitor began to alarm Those alarms constantly going off all across the NICU were unnerving but when I held you they were my reminder to calm my body my spirit and my mind until I could transfer that peace to you Surely enough when I did your oxygen levels would creep back up Sometimes it wasn t the alarms reminding us to find peace it was your sister still in my womb She had got used to the sensation of your warm peacefully cuddled body resting on my belly and she would kick a bit underneath you just to say hi or perhaps to remind us she was there If not for that skin to skin time and finding our calm with each other I m not sure how either of us would have fared during those 101 days you were in the hospital If not for the alarms of your monitors and Joelle s little feet and fists disturbing our uneasy peace and reminding us to seek a deeper peace I m not sure what sort of havoc those worries and anxieties would have wreaked in us both Someday dear boy you will discover that often we need others to help us find and make peace When Jesus talked about the coming realm of God he didn t just talk about a mansion we would live in alone He talked about the table we will sit at with God s beloved and the kin dom the brother sisterhood of which we will be apart True peace is often found together Never forget that if you want to bring peace into the world you first have to be peace Then it will seep over to others whom your life touches 1 Someday you will also discover that sometimes those things that seem to be disturbing the peace are really just shaking you awake to the chaos the danger and the tension really there beneath what appears tranquil Try if you are able to be grateful for those disturbances of your false sense of peace and to encourage the ones who ring the alarms when something is not right Those alarms literally saved your life quite a few times Joelle you hadn t even taken your first breath when they pushed you up through the water of the birthing tub into my waiting exhausted arms Coming right on the heels of your brother s homecoming my 38 hours of labor with you was the storm I thought would never end but there you were all brave and determined You entered the world ravenous Your cry so much louder than your brother s startled your mommy and I You nursed and nursed to your hearts content and then you passed out on my chest in a blissful milk coma your little fingers curled around mine You taught me a lesson that the Guarani the indigenous people of Paraguay know well Their word for peace is Pya guazu which literally translates as tranquil stomach You will discover it is hard for almost anyone to find create or feel peace without a full stomach If you want to be a peacemaker in the world you might start by feeding the hungry I hemorrhaged after you were born and couldn t stand up without passing out which meant on that first night at the hospital with you after mommy had gone home with Jacob and his oxygen tank to get some rest I wasn t able to get up and lift you from your bassinet when you cried My new momma hormones knocking me over with maternal instinct raged every time you cried It was maddening not to be able to rush to you hold you and feed you on my own Each time I would have to call for a nurse s help Each continued on page 9

FROM THE PASTOR S DESK continued from page 1 time it would take far longer for her to come than I wanted and I was so tired Someday you will discover that the work of peacemaking can be maddening If you attempt it you will realize you can t do it on your own that you need others help Many times they won t come to the work of peace as fast as you had wanted them to and they may not understand the urgency of the need as much as you do You will feel immensely tired from the labor of working alongside God to bring beloved community into the world Try if you are able to be patient and to remember that what you are ushering into the world is beautiful God given and so worth it Don t give up Even when you feel utterly exhausted you will discover a deeper well of love and endurance inside of you I m always surprised to find that well when I need it most and I can call it nothing other than the gift of God s own spirit inside of us Lizzy you too were only a few minutes old when I held you After mommy had delivered Jacob so early we were prepared for you to come early too For months we had our hospital bag packed and ready to go For months the doctors had mommy on medicine to try to make sure you stayed in the womb cooking until it was time We always thought your birth would come as a scary wonderful surprise the way your brother s did We were waiting for the storm to hit Never in a million years could we have expected that mommy would have to be induced and that when you still didn t come they would have to break her water and help usher you out When you were born you came out with your fist raised determinedly in the air Yours was not an easy labor induced labor rarely is Someday you will discover that sometimes the peace you thought was coming any day has to be induced and ushered painstakingly into the world You may grow frustrated and impatient and then when it is finally coming you may say I m not sure I can do this Never forget the way you entered this world fist up claiming your power Never forget that it is God who empowers you and that with God s power you can move mountains Unlike your brother whom we met so much sooner than we anticipated or your sister who grew in my womb and I could feel moving about I had a harder time connecting with you before you were born You seemed like just a hazy mirage But when I held you for the first time I knew with everything in my being that you were mine and I was yours and all was right You will find that sometimes peace will feel like a foggy dream somewhere out there something with which you are having a hard time connecting Keep trying keep waiting keep hoping that is the stuff of faith When peace comes you will know her She will dazzle and delight your world She will feel like coming home for in fact peace is a coming home into the embrace of God My children I pray you are peacemakers even though I can think of no harder work in the world Our global family needs peacemakers and I know you have all you need inside of you to do this work Never stop believing that I certainly will never stop believing in you Love Momma Pastor Jen TREASURER S REPORT Giving for the month of July was under budget by 1 152 overall income for July was under budget by only 800 On the expense side July was over budget by 290 I was able to catch up on our F A S T dues in July Water usage continues to be a problem mainly due to the toilets in the Fellowship Hall that are used by Head Start We needed to have a plumber come back and make further repairs Head Start does reimburse us for 50 of utilities including water and sewer The installation of the new air conditioning system in the Worship Center was completed the end of May We have paid the first Duke Energy bill received since the completion of the A C installation The energy use for the period June 20 July 20 2018 was 84 Kilowatt hours less than the same period in 2017 Comparing the same period in 2016 to the 2017 usage there was only a 1 Kilowatt difference We expect to see similar savings going forward Submitted by Kate Hall The Small Change offering for July was 35 57 9 IN MEMORY RICHARD E GAYLORD 11 26 1926 7 22 2018 When asked our secret for a long happy marriage 68 I remembered this Love is friendship that has caught fire It is quiet understanding mutual confidence sharing and forgiving It is loyalty through good and bad times It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses Love is content with the present it hopes for the future but doesn t brood over the past It s the day in and dayout chronicle of irritations problems compromises big victories and working toward common goals If you have love in your life it can make up for a great many things you lack If you don t have it no matter what else there is it s not enough Submitted by Jane Gaylord FOOD PANTRY NEEDS Soups vegetables spaghetti sauce and canned meats tuna
