ZONE 5 NOTES CHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP Happy New Year! Hope you had a great holiday and are ready to face a new decade. 2020- hard to believe what was such a distant future is here now. The only flying cars are the ones we had all along - our Porsches. It seems that no matter how old they get Porsches are still a great driving experience. I like the old ones and the new ones. The classics are still a joy, and provide a visceral hands-on experi-ence, while the new ones bathe you in comfort and luxury while delivering blistering performance. The new Taycan is adding another dimension with a full electric car that is also all Porsche. I got to see one at our dealer recently, and it was a beautiful, well put together car. I can’t wait to see one run an autocross. What does this have to do with Zone 5 and PCA? In a word - change. New cars, new people, new interests. PCA is one of the few car clubs in the country that is actually growing, and we want to keep it that way. Be open to new ideas and new members. Look for ways to expand our commu-nity and welcome our new members no matter what they drive. The club is expanding its tours with off-road tours. With the new electric cars coming out - perhaps the theme for our Longhorn Region Gimmick rally this Spring will be finding charging stations! Our club is young enough that we still have a few of the original members left. Imagine all the changes they have seen over the last 70 years. What hasn’t changed is the great people in this club, and how much fun we have together. I hope you get the chance to actively participate in your region’s events this year, and perhaps even PCA national events like Parade and Treffen’s. Registration should be open for this year’s Parade in Palm Springs, and it is going to be a good one. The theme for the his-toric display is hot rods and there are some great ones in southern California. I was in the area recently and got to see the Parade site. It is beautiful and will be a great venue. Five minutes from the hotel are some really great driving roads that lead up thru the San Bernardino mountain passes. Sure it is a long drive from Zone 5, but well worth considering.10 LH ROUNDUP

Meet the Longhorn...Patricia BroylesTell us a bit about yourself/family/background?I’m a happily married 55 yr. old mother of 4 with a pas-sion for fun. I’m a pianist, swimmer and travel enthu-siast. I’ve always enjoyed cars and collected them (7 cars at one time is my record). Blame my father – he was a classic car collector. To support my passions, my daily work is helping folks buy and sell residential real estate as broker/owner of Select Properties in Helotes.Several years ago, I noticed that many of my girlfriends drove convertibles, so I started the “Girls Topless Car Club” just for fun. You might occasionally see me wear-ing a pink visor that says “Drive Topless” - at my age, we mean the car, of course! What year did you join PCA?2013? John Berry introduced to me the club while we were working together at a charity function. I’ve been hooked ever since. (Side note, I helped him sell his house when he moved, and he sent me a package of food items specic to Ohio when he moved there – I loved it!)What other regions have you belonged to?None other – Loyal to the Longhorns! What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? My rst Porsche was a 928 I bought when I was 21 years old and I thought it was cool because of the “Risky Business” movie with Tom Cruise. My favorite is my current Blue 996 cabriolet with a 6-speed manual transmission; I love the way it takes curves! Plus, I can drive it topless! What’s your favorite Porsche memory?I was selling a house where the owner was being transferred to California and had to sell his Porsche project car because of the emissions regulations there. He said, “The washer, dryer, refrigerator and Porsche in the garage were negotiable”. Well you can imagine the attention the house got! I hadn’t owned a Porsche in a while and asked my husband what he thought about the car. He said, “Buy it if you want it!” So, I asked the seller to take me on a drive in the car because I didn’t want to risk damaging a car I didn’t own. We went from Helotes, TX to Bandera, TX in about 15 minutes! I was hooked. And also terried beyond belief! – I thought “I’m going to die but at least he’s a doctor and can help me” then promptly realized that he’d probably die too if we crashed. I didn’t end up buying that car, but that ride started my search for my current car. What LHR events do you enjoy most?Gimmick rallies are my favorite! My 25-year-old son Jake (also a PCA Longhorn) is my favorite Driver and/or navigator. We have so much fun on those drives! We’ve taken 3rd place and 2nd place but are still trying for 1st place! Autocross is another favorite where Jake shows me how fast and nimble my car can be when he’s driving it! I just like wearing the helmet and watch-ing GoPro videos from the events. Don’t think I’ll ever be as fast as Sherry or Susie. What’s your favorite Porsche?2015 Porsche 911 Targa. What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/partici-pate in?I love decorating fancy cakes with my daughter – we do it for friends and family. I attend quarterly scrap-booking and Cricut making retreats in the hill country with my girl friends.I’m an active member of The Woman’s Club of San An-tonio and enjoy donating time to help women in need better their education.LH ROUNDUP 13

Meet the Longhorn...John BarnesTell us a bit about yourself/family/background? I was born and raised in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Dad was a distinguished theoretical physicist who eventu-ally became responsible for leading efforts in weapons research as an assistant director of the laboratory. Mom recognized the need to instill a work ethic in my brother and me so with Dad serving as the bookkeeper on weekends, we opened an award-winning toy and hobby store. I served as the buyer for the model and hobby lines and built many models. My favorite model was the Jagermeister 911. My admiration for Porsche began long before my work in our store. I have always been passionate about cars… especially sports cars. If there is something in our genes that has anything to do with wheels and going fast, I got that from my mom. She loved to drive and began driving a Model T truck in the prune orchards in California when she was eight years old. I left home and attended New Mexico Military Institute and then New Mexico State University where I met the girl of my dreams, Robyn. I accepted a job and moved to San Antonio and Robyn followed shortly after. I earned my MBA from Our Lady of the Lake University while working for an oncology drug development firm. Robyn and I have been married for 37 years and have one son, Evan, who will graduate with a doctorate in physical therapy in May.What year did you join PCA? We are late comers to the Porsche family. Robyn and I joined the PCA in 2015 following the purchase of our 1986 Carrera. What other regions have you belonged to? Robyn and I are proud members of the Longhorn region, the only region to which we have belonged. What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? We own one Porsche, a 1986 copper metallic Carrera with a really cool whale tail, which is what I looked for when we purchased the car. I participate in the Hill Country Rallye and knowing that impact bumper models of this decade are plentiful, I decided I wanted to keep up with the 930s. So, the car will be ready for this year’s rally sporting a 3.6-liter engine, new brakes and suspension. I’m 6’5” so my next objective is to modify the seats to I can fit in the car with a helmet and participate in autocross and track day events. What’s your favorite Porsche memory? Two memories stand out. My interest in the Porsche brand began as soon as I started driving at 16. Someone in my hometown had a Porsche 356 and I was smitten with the look, the sound, and back then, the ability to drive in the snow. I subscribed to a couple of auto-mobile magazines and read about DP Motorsport, a company that modified Porsche 911s. I thought the cars were beautiful and vowed to own a 911 someday. In 2018, Robyn and I went to the Rennsport Reunion VI in Monterey, California. Of the many memories made over the three days we attended, meeting and getting autographs from many of the Porsche greats including Norbert Singer and Hurley Haywood stand out. Simply a wonderful event. What LHR events do you enjoy most? Robyn and I enjoy the monthly dinners and the drives. We enjoy meeting members of the club. As the saying goes, “It's not just the cars, It's the people.” Someday soon, I’ll participate in the autocross and track day events. What’s your favorite Porsche? I have three favorites… one each for road, race, and rally. As for road, the 911 model variants are simply the best sports cars made... ever. Of the many excep-tionally successful race cars made by Porsche, the 917 was a monster and arguably, the most successful Le Mans winning race car of its time. Ironically, it killed the Can-Am series, given its domination. I had the pleasure of seeing two of them racing in their class at Rennsport. The 1980s Rothmans 959 Paris-Dakar rally cars were all-wheel drive titans especially with Jacki Ickx at the wheel.14 LH ROUNDUP

Page 15

What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/participate in? Having grown up in the mountains of northern New Mexico, I spent a lot of time outdoors skiing and back-packing. I still enjoy hiking and camping with friends. I have been a member of a sailboat racing team for almost 30 years and we have won a lot of races over the years. Over the course of 35 years, I was a long-distance cyclist and rode with the wounded warriors from San Antonio to Arlington, Texas. While I don’t ride nearly as often, I still get on my bike now and then. Finally, Robyn and I have a wonderful Golden Retriever, Gracie. She’s our sixth Golden and we may find a male to join our family one day.LA QUINTA • COACHELLA • CATHEDRAL CITY • PALM DESERT • INDIO • DESERT HOT SPRINGS • INDIAN WELLS • RANCHO MIRAGE • PALM SPRINGS ARE YOU IN?THE 2020 PORSCHE PARADEJUNE 21-27LA QUINTA RESORT AND SPALa Quinta (Palm Springs), CaliforniaPorscheParade.org laquintaresort.comuse this small one when reproducingless than 1/2 inchLH ROUNDUP 15

AUTOCROSS NEWS JAMES BRICKEN Well, guess this is the off season. In case you missed it, we capped off the 2019 season with the autocross awards at the annual holiday party. Chuck Bush, Mike Mullen, and Chris Upton took top honors. Mike Mullen was also awarded with a trophy for best Novice. We already have the first two dates for the 2020 season. Our first event at Retama will be 14 March, and we also have an event on 19 April in conjunction with Fiesta Challenge. I’m also working on date for early May and early June. Then we will take a break until about late September. We are going to try to run a special novice division. But of course, there will be separate rules. The scoring will still be using the PAX system, but novice drivers will be segregated into their own separate division. To qualify for novice class this must be the driver’s first calendar year (starting in January and ending in December) for doing autocross. Drivers must complete at least 90% of the events for the year. There must be at least five drivers participating in novice program to qualify for a year-end trophy. Drivers will be required to have an “N” on their car in addition to the regular number (ie: 123N). The following is an excerpt from an article I wrote back in 1999 when I headed an autocross school for the club. I think it still mostly applies today. I learned allot myself at the school; mostly why other drivers aren’t faster than they are. I think what it boils down to is that many drivers have developed some bad habits and are having difficulty changing. The three things greatest shortcomings I noticed the most are: 1. Exhilaration: I think drivers are worrying too much about performing well. Be patient. For the most part it only comes with time, but once you stop worrying about doing well, you WILL do well. 2. Braking: Drivers can’t seem to break their bond with the brake pedal. It’s not an absolute truth, but in general, braking should be done BEFORE turning. Braking in a turn is likely to cause more problems than it solves! 3. Overturning: Although I understand the tempta-tion to apply allot of steering input in an attempt to be sure of negotiating an obstacle, it’s definitely not the fast way. It’s better to enter the turn more conserva-tively and use the power to exit once your situated. With the exception of learning patience, many of the high-performance techniques myself and others discuss can be practiced safely on your daily commute; then it won’t be so foreign when it comes race time. I also fully endorse go-carts, Malibu Grand Prix, and certain video games as a way to learn and practice skills; and they’re all cheaper than driving your car at an event. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly timid nature of autocrossing, it’s truly a difficult skill to master that takes lots of practice. Sunday’s autocrossing was deliberately designed to be overly simple so that drivers could focus on driving the car, instead of trying to remember where the course was. For the most part the entire course could be driven in second gear, so drivers didn’t have to worry about shifting either. I guess I should have pointed this out before the event; my fault. In fact, I should have offered a block of instruction on the correct way to drive the course, as well as offering instruction during the practice runs. If some-body reminds me, I’ll try to make up for it at the next event. Remember: practice - practice - practice...18 LH ROUNDUP

MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRILL It’s winter. The end of one motorsport season and some time before the start of our 2020 pro-gram. While enjoying the holidays and the cooler days of January (my joints don’t enjoy cool and wet days), let’s look back over the years. When I started to write “Motorsport Ramblings” some ten years ago, I had just started an autocross pro-gram for the club. Longhorn Region had not had autocross since the 1997 Parade. We started back slowly at a small and gravely venue, the Shrine Temple on Loop 1604. The club was smaller but we actually had better participation than we do now.We had members participating that had never seen an autocross before. Smiles were abundant and the turnout was always good. Over the years, we introduced many of our lady members to the fun of exercising their cars. As always, my right-hand guy has been Ron McAtee who handles the tim-ing and about anything else you ask him to do.After several years, we found a better venue on the larger lot at Retama Horse track and fortunately we are still allowed to use it. Sadly though, even with the growth of the club, the number of people supporting the autocross program has decreased and more than a few times we’ve not met the mini-mum number to break even. James Bricken has added new energy to the program and is trying to get the interest back up. Autocross is a great op-portunity to exercise your car and improve your driving skills in a safe and controlled environment.Shortly after getting the autocross program back up and running, I was asked to start a track orienta-tion program and we did. Thanks to the good folks at Harris Hill raceway. we have held two or three events there every year and have three scheduled for this year. It’s another great opportunity to have fun in a safe, controlled environment and exercise your car at slightly faster speeds to improve your driving skills. For those that have not participated, come out, our instructors and staff will ensure you have a good time, are safe and do not exceed your capabilities. The object is to learn to handle your Porsche, not to just go fast. Again, it’s great to see the number of our lady members that join in.Neck issues have forced me to retire from actu-ally enjoying these events but I still get great joy helping to run them and seeing smiles on drivers’ faces as they improve their skills and have a good time. It’s a fact that the skills you learn on the auto-cross course or during our track days will make you a more observant and safer driver on the highway.Wow, it has been a great journey helping people enjoy their Porsche cars and SUV’s. I’ve had the pleasure of being with lots of great people and I hope this will continue.Get your car ready because it won’t be long un-til James’ rst autocross. Drive safely, have fun and expect the unexpected. Remember, Porsches always look better when the driv-er has a helmet on. Happy new year to all!LH ROUNDUP 21

Longhorn has lost a friend.Ted Howell has passed away in December after a valiant fight with a lengthy illness. Ted did not just travel through life he lived it and sometimes rather spirit-edly as evidenced by the several “side of the road” encounters with law enforcement. More on that later.Ted was a good father and husband. Karen was his star in the sky and they were a great couple - adventuring through life together. He was not the fastest of drivers in autocross or track days but no one had more fun nor came away with a bigger smile. He was also an avid golfer ….. not the best but no one enjoyed the game more. He was always looking for that new club that would solve his problems. He will find it in heaven and probably has already scheduled a tee time with Arnold Palmer and they are just negotiating who gets strokes. Now back to the side of the road… and as Ted relayed it to me. He and Karen were on their way to the Porsche Parade in Monterey Calif several years ago and as Ted did on occasion, a long empty stretch of road was a place to exercise his car. At that time, Ted had a GT3 and quickly exercised it to above 125mph. All was going good until he crested a hill in a lonely portion of New Mexico and there he saw a state trooper. Without hesitation, or the trooper prompt-ing it, Ted put on the brakes, turned on his right turn signal and safely pulled over to the shoulder. By the time the trooper caught up and exited his car both Ted and Karen were loudly laughing. Teds first comment to the trooper was “ What are you doing out in a deso-late place like this?” The trooper’s response was “ catching people like you.” Well the conversation must have gone well as all Ted got was ticket for 10 over the speed limit. Yes, he did live life on the spirited side. I, like so many, will miss Ted. We spent many hours enjoying each other on the golf course as well as the many calls I would get inquiring “what did I think of this or that Porsche?” Yes, like the search for the perfect golf club, Ted did like to trade cars but that was Ted. His zest for life was catchy and his smile warm. He is now without pain and at peace. I will always cherish the time I spent with Ted and the friend-ship we had. I already miss our almost daily calls, many times talking about nothing in parti-cular… just two friends sharing life. Godspeed and hit them long and straight my friend.RIP Ted HowellArticle and Pictures by Jack MerrellTed’s License Plate22 LH ROUNDUP

Tech SessionIt has been a couple of years since our last tech session and it was well worth the wait. Porsche of San Antonio hosted the event on Jan 11. Chuck Bush, our Zone 5 rep-resentative, started the event by introducing Don Faerber, General Manager. Don said a few words about the deal-ership and introduced Jerry Mullins, Service Manager, who talked about the tech session and how it would work.Don divided the group of 50 members into two groups. One group would be with the sales force where they would explain the features and functions of the cars. They did an excellent job at providing the information and answering the questions the members asked. I overheard a number of questions that were very technical in nature and they were answered very easily by the sales force. Well done! The other group assembled in the service bay where the technicians explained what maintenance tasks were performed and how they were performed. They had numerous cars both on the ground and in the air and showed how certain maintenance actions were performed. The members ask very good ques-tions and were surprised at some of the answers. Some things we thought were simple to do we found out were difficult to do because of the placement of various pieces of equipment. Then the groups switched.Don and Jerry, you provided an excellent venue for the tech session and the information your employees pro-vided was awesome! Thank you very much! And Chuck, as always you provided an event where the membership had a great time and learned valuable information.Article and Photos byMike Matthews24 LH ROUNDUP

Drive to Blanco and Kai Smone WineryOur first club drive of the year started off with a quiet whirr as we all got to see the new Taycan electric car at the Porsche dealer. It was great to see the beautiful car that we have been hearing so much about, and its looks did not disappoint. It was a very nicely put together car. It was comfort-able to sit in, looks every bit a Porsche, and accord-ing to those who have driven it, drives like one too. I can’t wait to see one at one of our autocrosses. After coffee and donuts provided by the Porsche dealer, we headed out onto some scenic back roads. There are some amazing roads right here in our back-yard. One road south of Waring, Texas is like driving through a private ranch along the Guadalupe river. Multiple low water crossings snake across the river as it seems you are driving along the riverbed. A long line of derelict antique cars is just icing on the cake. The roads opened up a bit as we got closer to Blanco with some fun twisty curves and hills. After about 90 miles of back roads, we arrived in Blanco Texas for lunch. Despite being one of our largest drives to date with over forty cars, the restaurants in downtown Blanco quickly fed our hungry horde with sandwiches, BBQ, and Pizza. After lunch, we headed out via some more scenic back roads to the Kai-Simone Winery in Spring Branch. A little wine tasting and socializing was a great way to end a fun day. I hope everyone on the drive enjoyed it, and I look forward to seeing you all on our 22 February drive to the Love Creek Apple Orchard Café in Medina, Texas. Michael Sorbera has a fun route planned for us and it promises to be another great day. Hope you can join us!Article by Chuck BushPhotos by Susie Bush, Mike Matthews and Shelley Matthews26 LH ROUNDUP

Roundup in RoundtopOn January 18, 2020 air-cooled Porsches from San Antonio and Houston met at Royer’s Restaurant in Roundtop for the Annual January Roundup. The big attraction of the day was Chuck Bush’s Gulf Blue 1973 911. If you ever wonder about Chuck’s many talents, talk to him about building this car, and then look at it. It’s gorgeous! I may be going out on a limb, but we got a preview of a winner of this year’s Fiesta Concours. We met Donovan and Rita Butter enroute to Bastrop where we stopped at Buc’ee’s for gas. The trip improved after that, roughly following the Colorado River along Hwy 183 in some special cars, including Eric Kelner’s RS America and Donovan’s Turbo-look 911. The overcast threatened, and spit a little rain at us, but it didn’t dampen our spirits.Roundtop is one end of the antiques alley that runs up Hwy 237 from La Grange. Visitor’s got to see a dozen beautiful antique Porsches, including a Werks Reunion winning 912, a 356 coupe and a 356 cabriolet, and two other 912s. Lunch at Royer’s is always a treat. You can’t leave without having pie and ice cream, and the waitresses call you “Honey” without being accused of sexual harassment. God bless Texas, and God bless old Porsches, still roaring after all these years.Top of Eric Kelner’s car after the rain. Back in the early aughts, I owned a 1976 930 Turbo Carrera. I truly loved it. However, over a period of time, it began to scare the hell out of me every time I drove it. I noticed a slapping noise coming from the engine bay when I let off the gas, especially when up-or-down shifting. After some research, it appeared to be a failing oil pressure spring in the fuel injec-tion system which caused the piston that bled off the internal oil pressure to slap or bottom out. A fix was needed. The housing for the spring was on the back of the engine (or front) – depending on your orienta-tion. But from my vantage point, it was on the back. I don’t have huge hands but no matter how I tried to squeeze my hand into the tiny opening, I couldn’t get access to it. I tried to custom bend tools to access the bolts holding the assembly together. No dice. So, with the help of a friend, we figured out how to take the engine and transmission out of the car. We chalked the front wheels and jacked the back up using the biggest jack stands I could find. The car looked pretty funny: its nose low to the ground and the rear tilted up at an extreme angle. Slowly, the engine emerged from the bottom of the 930, a frac-tion of an inch at a time. We managed to clear the bumper with a half inch to spare. Lowered onto an engine stand made from a furniture dolly, we could finally work on it. Side note: we got so good at remov-ing the engine, the half shafts, clutch cable, fuel and oil lines, and unplugging the engine harness, we could take the motor out (or put it back in) in ninety minutes. It usually cost me a six pack of good (pre micro-brewery) imported beer. Cheap? You bet.Oh yeah – that oil-pressure spring. It was easy, took me only a few minutes to change it. But then I got to thinking. What else could I do? You know, while you’re in there. I adjusted the valves, replaced the clutch and flywheel, repacked the half-shafts, took out the nasty old sound insulation from the engine bay and replaced with new. It seems like every time I did one thing, dozens of others popped up. It was like playing whack-a-mole. I had told my wife all I was going to do was replace that spring. Five thousand dollars later, I had refreshed or refurbed many of the engine-bay com-ponents. Then there was the AC system. The drier unit needed replacing. But after inspecting the AC hoses, I realized they were shot. So, in another episode of – while you’re in there – I replaced the AC hoses. First, I priced them. Back then Porsche still sold the fabric-wrapped replacement sets (they’re no longer available). But I could buy them then if I didn’t mind spending almost three grand. As that was a budget buster, I took the hoses to an aero-nautical firm that custom built hoses. Price? Three hundred bucks. And, an exact match. Problem was they were hard to install. Turns out the fabric- wrapped hoses bend easily. The rubber ones I bought, not so much. So, I spent an entire weekend kneeling in the front of the 930, the hood carefully propped open, bending hoses. My knees felt like they were on fire, they hurt so bad. But hey, while you’re in there. The point? How many times have you started an auto-motive project and realized that if you just do a little bit more, you can take care of a future project, you know - save time, save money. Because, while you’re in there. Recently I spent over five hours refurbishing the wheel barrels on my 981 S. I decided to remove the leftover rubber residue from having the old wheel weights removed at a tire shop. I came back upstairs several hours later, knuckles busted up, bleeding a bit and my wife looked at me and said, “I thought you were only going to wash the wheels. Oh wait – it’s another case of while you’re in there. Right?”Yep, busted again. Guilty as charged. While you’re in there..... Article by Rob Turner, Maverick Region28 LH ROUNDUP
