Rewriting stories Fourteen year old Grant arrived at the Children s Home with his sister anxious about what our Home would hold for them Would the people they met be nice Would they be cared for Would there be food available every day Would their new home have consistent running water and electricity Due to their parents mental illness and substance abuse the siblings had suffered emotional and physical abuse in addition to a lack of basic necessities Grant was searching for a place to belong one where they would feel safe and cared for He was optimistic that the Children s Home could be that place In just a few months time Grant and his sister have settled into life on our campus Grant enjoys playing basketball and video games with the other boys in his cottage He eagerly helps with chores in his cottage learning to prepare meals do his laundry and keep his room clean Grant no longer worries where his next meal will come from or whether they will have water and electricity As school begins Grant is becoming more confident in himself and is excited to to see what the new year brings Grant is optimistic that they now have the opportunity to begin rewriting their story surrounded by people who love and support them Many of our youth arrive without a stable foundation The Children s Home becomes that for our children We help them begin the process of rewriting their stories What would happen if the Children s Home wasn t here to provide our youth with that foundation Welcome home After a two year pause the Children s Home welcomed our alumni family and friends back to campus for our annual Alumni Homecoming in July A crowd of nearly 200 gathered in Memorial Chapel for a service celebrating our current and former youth Bobby Jenkins spoke to the group about trusting God and others The highlight of the day was one of our current youth volunteering to pray during the morning service Afterwards everyone visited over a catered Parker s lunch in Whitley Center spending time with those they hadn t seen lately Alumni both young and old shared their stories of life at the Home Former alumni and family toured campus visiting their former cottages and checking out Williamson Cottage Homecoming is a special time for our alumni and families as they gather with brothers and sisters and reflect on what life was like at the Home as well as the many successes they ve had throughout the years We can t wait to see everyone next year for Alumni Homecoming July 8 9 2023 the alumni are planning to host a Saturday night cookout in addition to the Sunday events next year www fwbchildrenshome org CHILDREN S HOME LIFE 3

A lasting legacy Williamson Cottage was named in the memory of Bobby Myrtle and Lynn Williamson of Wilson NC by their loving family The Williamsons were longtime supporters of the FWBCH and their family continues this legacy My parents and sister were amazing individuals They shared their faith and lives in so many different ways After my mother passed away I could feel the Lord pulling on my heart strings I had no idea the cottage would be named after them What better way to honor their memory Pam Williamson Boyette a gathering place When Hurricane Florence hit the coast of North Carolina in 2018 a red oak tree in Sheri Lewis backyard was a casualty of the storm This beautiful thriving tree that had provided years of shade for the Lewis family was broken but the story doesn t end there Mrs Lewis knew there was a bigger purpose for the tree She spoke with Children s Home President Gary Lee about using the tree to create a dining table for Williamson Cottage After the help of community members with milling the fallen tree Mrs Lewis and her cousins spent many nights and weekends crafting the table for our new cottage In its creation they shared laughs memories prayers and love the same things they hoped for the youth who would gather around it once complete Just as the table was the center of their family while they were crafting it they prayed that it would be the center of the home for the young people and cottage parents living in Williamson Cottage This table will be a gathering place for young people for years to come a place to share to laugh to pray to become a family 6 CHILDREN S HOME LIFE www fwbchildrenshome org

Fun Times New Friends Class of 2022 Every summer hundreds of young people across Eastern and Central NC board charter buses and make the trip west to Cragmont Assembly for summer camp The youth living at the Children s Home are no different they are provided the opportunity to spend a week at one of the Free Will Baptist camp weeks at Cragmont This summer eleven of our young people loaded the bus for YFC Camp They learned about walking with Christ and volunteered to read scripture and pray This has had a wonderful effect on campus as they are now seeking opportunities to be actively involved during devotions and worship services They made new friends and experienced new things including the round net swings which they ve asked for around campus Several saw mountains for the first time and were in awe of them They came home talking about their experiences for weeks We are proud of this group for stepping outside of their comfort zone and making this trip up the mountain Statistics show that only half of youth in foster care graduate from high school The young people living at the Children s Home are beating those odds This year the Children s Home had four seniors to graduate from high school We are proud of all these young people have accomplished during the past four years including almost an entire school year of virtual schooling due to Covid They have persevered and worked hard to rise above the statistics and become high school graduates We have followed them on their journey seeing them head off to Prom obtaining their driver s permits and walking with them in college and career choices Two of our seniors are attending four year universities One young man is working full time and plans to begin community college next semester he is living in our Thrive Independent Living apartments The final graduate has gone to live with extended family while seeking fulltime employment We are honored to have been able to share this milestone with them Band of Brothers When eleven year old Jacob arrived at his foster family s home he was scared and missing his two younger brothers With his family torn apart by substance abuse and domestic violence the three brothers had been placed into two different homes Jacob settled into his new home and routine but missed being with his brothers His foster mom began taking him to visit them letting them play together and maintain the all important sibling bond Shortly after these visits began Jacob s foster mom started the process to foster all three boys She knew the importance of them staying together and the positive impact that would have on their lives Soon after Jacob s two younger brothers came to live in her home The boys blossomed even more They became more social and outgoing you could see the stress of their separation melting away Becoming a foster family allowed their mom to advocate for the boys best interest to keep them together as a family Can you make a difference in the life of a child The Children s Home is currently seeking individuals and families to join our Family Foster Care Adoptions program For information on becoming a foster family contact us at 252 235 2161 or tbatchelor fwbch org www fwbchildrenshome org CHILDREN S HOME LIFE 7
