IN LOVING MEMORY OF Wil iam Counsell I it was running the 800 me ters or waiting patiently for bush pigs and yellow bellies At home he was constantly busy with so many holiday projects Chickens at Nana s house making jig heads for fishing a complicat ed aqua culture he set up all himself and especially the hilarious potato gun which gave us endless entertainment He dismantled the gas braai in order to get the starter flint for ignition the same potato gun was responsible for an obliterated rain gauge a bruise the size of a grape fruit and Andrew Smith s singed eyebrows William did not quit be it hunting or fishing or motorbikes or skiing or bungee jumping or Polocrosse He was simply fearless somehow we even managed to sneak him onto a white water rafting trip in spite of being a year under age and having stitches in his knee think everyone who met William has been touched by this golden boy of ours Many people remember William as being quiet but he was very funny and brilliant at making small talk with absolutely anybody even from a young age He will always be our pride and joy So earnest in all his endeavours Nothing was done by halves We all know of his exceptional sportsmanship At Musikili he swept the board at Cross Country and on the track and he continued to display his athletic talent at senior school He was identified as the best newcomer in rowing and his team have named their latest vessel The Spirit of William Counsell He was a fabulous talent on the polocrosse field and even travelled to UK to represent Zambia in a junior world cup In spite of all his achievements he never bragged he accepted the accolades piled on him with humility and respect William remains with us at every turn in our lives and yet forever absent We miss him and we will always love him William always gave his heart and soul into all that he did whether 9

PRIZE GIVING 2017 The Headmster s Speech G ood morning to Members of the Board Teachers Parents and of course Prize Winners It is my honour and privilege to welcome you all to the Prize Giving ceremony for the year 2017 So this morning is about acknowledging the efforts of our pupils in terms of academic and extra curricular excellence It is the occasion where we reflect back on the year 2017 and identify those who have excelled There will also be awards for those who may not be the best but have put in the best effort For the academic award winners this morning is about affirming your consistently good work and effort performed in the classroom throughout the year The extra curricular awards will be made to pupil s who have performed consistently well in the sporting codes and cultural activ ities on offer at our school Special award winners will have consistently displayed positive attributes of character attitudes values and personality Those paying attention may have noticed that the word consistently has been mentioned in three contexts Purposely so to emphasise the importance of consistency in success For the pupils who are not quite certain what consistently means it is to perform some task or action always reliably without fail regularly or dependably Success does not come from what you do occasionally but from what you do all the time or consistently Consistent good work in whatever we do or are tasked to do will mostly result in consistently good outcomes However being consistent in what we do and how we act should not be misconstrued as only doing the same thing all the time day in and day out While consistent effort is required consistently looking for ways to be better and smarter at what we do is just as important because consistency in process and procedure assures quality while consistently seeking to be better at what and how we do our work ensures growth and devel opment It s not always about being perfect but it is about effort and when you bring that ef fort every single day that s when transformation happens That s how change occurs There fore with consistent effort and thought there is indeed every chance of success Celebrating 30 years of primary school excellennce Teachers are responsible for creating enabling environments wherein developmental growth is made possible encouraged and can occur while support staff have an equally critical and consistent role to play in providing service and innovation in the office hostels kitchen grounds and sickbay In turn parents must pursue and exercise their legitimate right to rea sonably demand and receive the best opportunities for their children from the school Back to the award winners as with anything worthwhile pursuing maintaining momentum is everything So if we have done well enough to be recognised with an award this morning contributed wholeheartedly as a member of staff or supported our children as best we can in their schooling experiences we are to be heartily congratulated and encouraged to carry the momentum through to 2018 and indeed beyond In closing as Sandy and I get ready to leave Musikili our wish is that the path that this school has been set upon will be further pursued in order to ensure that the ongoing process of quality assurance and continuous development goes forward into 2018 10

CLASS REPORTS GRADE O ur Grade R class might not have been the biggest class in school but we made up for it with our determination to work as a group and to take part in all aspects that Musikili had to offer It was a very exciting year with Musikili turning 30 and our youngsters entering their first year at school During the course of this year we had a special visitor by the name of Tinkerbell who came to visit us every now and again when we needed some inspiration She would come and visit the classroom leaving only her fairy dust and if we were lucky enough a per sonalised letter with a sucker as evidence The Grade R class had the privilege of being taught by Mrs Snart during the course of Term 1 where she CLASS REPORT then moved to our Satellite school in Lusaka She did a great job in preparing the learners to become true Musikilian s We all took part in our first ever Polar Bear Swim showing great perseverance and enthusi asm to get from the deep side all the way to the shallow side This was a great year for all Each learner showed tremendous growth and an eagerness to learn Our main aim was to be kind and always treat others the way we would like to be treat ed We are looking forward to welcoming all the new Grade Rs for 2018 and to be their big broth ers and sisters 29 Left to Right Mrs Lizette Dry Asher Cantlay Taite Hein Justine Bignell Ms Polly Mwaambwa

TRIP TO MOORINGS FARM MONZE T his year our Grade R s decided to incorporate our class trip with one of our themes for Term 3 The learners were overly excited as our farming destination was kept a secret until the very last moment We started our visit at the Moorings Farm in Monze with a head count of all the goats and sheep making our job very difficult because neither of these two look alike and they move fast Never the less we managed just fine with a count well above 100 Feeding the goats was easy peasy lemon squeezy Not one goat went hungry that day Meeting up with the sheep Angus and Vaughan was no picnic they were both quite intimidating as seen in the photo below Meeting up with the horses was not new for any of us but meeting a horse that expected us to keep a secret now that is most definitely a first for me At first we thought Taite might even have a secret admirer as one horse absolutely loved whispering things in his ear Later that day we went to the pig s pen Now that was an experience All the pigs were un der strict hygiene and we helped to keep a close eye on them Some of the piglets made the scariest sounds no sound any of us were used to Before we had our picnic on the grass we all went for a fascinating horse ride to make sure our farming trip was complete What would a farm trip be without a horse ride anyway Our Grade R class would like to thank Uncle James and Aunty Kim Lawrence for their hos pitality during our first Musikili Class trip This most definitely will be a well remembered trip for years to come 31

GRADE LUSAKA SATELLITE CLASS REPORT T he term started well with a nicely balanced group of six girls and five boys They were en thusiastic about learning their alphabet letter sounds and beginning to blend letters together to form short words Story time was a favourite part of the day and they enjoyed competing to answer questions about the story The class took to number work keenly and impressed me with accurate counting and being able to form their numbers correctly With a good grounding in number value they were able to move onto early addition and subtraction Celebrating 30 years of primary school excellennce Creative ability particularly from the girls was apparent in Topic work They enjoyed learning about Farming Animals of different continents and Festivals We did Swimming and P E twice a week and the children were proud to show off their swim ming skills at the Musikili Gala They had fun meeting their Mazabuka class mates and being able to clamber onto the winning podium alongside them At the end of term we made another trip to Musikili to join in the Junior Nativity Play It was great fun learning the songs and dances The children s practice paid off and they contributed beautifully to the play Most slept over in the dorms and proudly collected accolades at Prize Giving the following day A super introduction to Musikili life 32 Left to Right Back Cassidy Donald Adam Glendinning Thomas Farmer Riley Bawden Claire Nortje Front Row Shohei Sasaki Holly Tunney Amber Thomas Emma Ferreira Ella Bragge Mrs Jane Snart Insert Leopold Haefner

Sandy Sea Monster The beach was almost deserted only a few people lay soaking in the sun s rays when from nowhere came a giant hand which picked us all up All we saw was a blue surface under us We felt really scared We screamed we shouted but nobody was around to save us Suddenly we started moving forward At that point one of us found the strength to ask Where are we going We were as scared as a mouse We wished that we had gone home earlier Then we got the monster s head Haaa Haaa Haaa The face was ugly Is this a real face asked one of us Where are you taking us Why are you people being so mean to me said the monster in a booming voice I am just taking you to the giant s villa so you can see the king and the queen You are a friendly giant we all echoed at once Yes said the giant I just want friendly people that are good to me like ds bs and cs I would love to be your friend unfortunately I can t because I have a family waiting for me at the beach explained Monica The giant replied Ok I will just go and get your families No take us home said Johanna We just want to go home to our families At last the monster took them back but asked in a soft voice come and give me a sweet every day Celebrating 30 years of primary school excellennce Jordan Ferreira The Boys and The Hungry Polar Bear The Elephant Disaster Alex and Liselo woke up very excited about the planned fishing adventure that day After breakfast they did their chores and jumped on the sledge to go fishing Alex cast his net and caught a baby seal we all felt sorry for it therefore we decided to let it go Before we let go of the baby seal a hungry polar bear dived into the water and ate the seal Liselo screamed Ahhhhh The polar bear looked at him and without hesitating chased him Alex started to run too When they were near home Liselo knocked into a block of ice Before they knew it they found themselves swimming in a pool of ice cold water Afraid of what was going to happen to them they decided to paddle Alex swam but Liselo had trouble swimming The polar bear charged towards him Liselo held onto a block of ice for his life The polar bear broke the block of ice by leaping onto it And Liselo was not seen with the polar bear gain Did Alex see Liselo again Benjamin and Lukas went to the zoo Then they saw that something was wrong so they went to the boss and said We think that there s something wrong The boss went to check what was going on Out of nowhere the elephant ran so fast that the man could not get away from the oncoming elephant Unfortunately he died on the spot By the time the elephant got out of the zoo it had killed a total of100 people and injured 80 The elephant ran all the way to the city and into a shop People all over were panicking and got so angry because it broke the shop So people were trying to stop it but it was too strong By the time they called Animal Control it had killed over 200 people destroyed half the city and injured 1000 people The Animal Control were trying to dart it but it was so fast they could not hit it Eventually they threw a net over it and tried to dart it The dart gun wasn t strong enough to go through its skin so they shot it with the world s biggest gun It went to sleep and that s how they managed to load it in a truck What a relief it was in the city Alpheas Liselo Caleb Coventry 52

TRIP TO WILDLIVES KALOMO T his year the Grade Fours returned to the wildlife Camp in Kalomo The camp was crammed full of activities which included the traditional early morning game drive before breakfast We looked forward to these sessions enjoying the sightings of sable hartebeest kudu and loads of lechwe We caught alluring glimpses of zebras through the trees but excited chatter from the back of the trucks always sent them hurtling away However we were delighted to see the only surviving members of roan Uncle Slow led the class in several activities including lessons on skulls and game shooting He taught us some of the basics of bush tracking and demonstrated many of the ways a game farm is managed Other activities that left a lasting impression were fishing in the dam fire lighting kopje climbing and impala shooting Uncle Slow took advantage of the knowledge and skills of one of the boys and afforded him the chance to shoot an impala Although some children were slightly squeamish about parts of the disection most appreciated the chance to get their hands dirty and hold an impala heart or squeeze its lungs 53 The class was well informed on Uncle Sydney s camp fire stories As a result the fire lighting was a much anticipated activity The children enjoyed the stories while roasting delicious marshmallows What an amazing time we all had The Grade Fours would like to thank everyone who made this camp possible and all those who helped out with supervision during the camp A special thanks also to the Middleton Family who hosted us and led many of the activities It was much appreciated

What I enjoyed at Chongwe On a breezy Monday 24th July I went on a trip to Chongwe with my fellow Grade Sevens Using Figurative Speech The Game It seemed John had decided to throw in the towel when like a bolt from the blue he shot up like a bullet to save the day at the eleventh hour When he got back up he was shocked to nd himself in the limelight He saved goals every day so it wasn t as if this happened once in a blue moon John was impressed by the opposition striker s shot even though it was a ash in the pan John passed the ball to Zack who found the opposition s Achilles heel and scored just in the nick of time At the end of the game John s team went to thank the opposition but they turned into a lot of wet blankets and gave them the cold shoulder Malvern Donga We woke up at six o clock to begin our long journey After stopping at Matobo Vet we split up into groups to travel in the cruisers and school bus We had a fantastic lunch at Gwabi left the bus there and travelled to our destination on the cruisers We arrived at camp and had our safety talk with Dr Mr Parsons and were taught what ght or ight zone meant We also learnt about Chris Liebenberg the owner of the land we were using and realised how fortunate we were During our trip we were taught how to sh make re and dart We also learnt ecology bush signs rst aid and how to identify mammals birds and trees We saw many crocodiles andamazing stars and planets through the telescope at night We saw lots of birds trees and mammals I enjoyed eating delicious food at Chongwe I liked spotting the animals and doing activities I enjoyed working with my team and sleeping in the tent Most of all I enjoyed the privilege of going to Chongwe Celebrating 30 years of primary school excellennce Neil Basera 66
