e From 1985 1988 Oldenburg and van Bruggen created Spoonbridge and Cherry at the Walker Art Center s Minneapolis sculpture garden When the center first commissioned the pair to create a piece the formal flower gardens reminded Van Bruggen of Versailles This association drew her to think about the formal dining etiquette of the palace and thus draw a link to Oldenburg s fascination with spoons Oldenburg had created many drawings of large spoon sculptures and he even replaced the Chicago Navy Pier with a spoon in one of his drawings She then added a cherry to his spoon and the famous sculpture was born 7
