Through prayer, we bring our needs, our fears, our gratitude, and our hopes before Him. Yet many of our prayers naturally focus on what is familiar, comfortable, and close to home. We pray for healing, provision, guidance, and protection. These are good and necessary prayers, but they often ask God to change our circumstances more than they ask Him to change us. Throughout Scripture, however, we encounter another kind of prayer—one that we can hesitate to pray because it asks something deeper. Prayers for unity. Prayers for our enemies. Prayers that invite God to search our hearts. Prayers for boldness. These are dangerous pray- ers—not because they place us in danger - but because they invite God to transform our hearts. Richard Foster writes, "To pray is to change. This is a great grace. How good of God to provide a path whereby our lives can be taken over by love, and joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and self-control.” From July 12 through August 9 - we will explore these challenging prayers togeth- er. Through prayer, we bring our needs, our fears, our gratitude, and our hopes before Him. Yet many of our prayers naturally focus on what is familiar, comfortable, and close to home. We pray for healing, provision, guidance, and protection. These are good and necessary prayers, but they often ask God to change our circumstances more than they ask Him to change us. Throughout Scripture, however, we encounter another kind of prayer—one that we can hesitate to pray because it asks something deeper. Prayers for unity. Prayers for our enemies. Prayers that invite God to search our hearts. Prayers for boldness. These are dangerous pray- ers—not because they place us in danger - but because they invite God to transform our hearts. Richard Foster writes, "To pray is to change. This is a great grace. How good of God to provide a path whereby our lives can be taken over by love, and joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and self-control.” From July 12 through August 9 - we will explore these challenging prayers togeth- er.
