s p on s or ed b y HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS What kind of fish has asthma A puffer fish Take a Deep Breath MAY IS NATIONAL ASTHMA MONTH Asthma is a lung disease that can make your child s airways more sensitive to certain things i e triggers Asthma is usually diagnosed by either your child s pediatrician an allergist or a pulmonologist lung specialist If your child has been diagnosed with asthma here are some tips to help control and prevent asthma attacks Keep your home or apartment clean Mold dust pet dander and other environmental factors can trigger an asthma attack Cleaning your house on a regular basis checking for mold changing your air filter in your heating AC unit and purchasing an air purifier are several ways to reduce your child s exposure to triggers in your home Smoking or Vaping Smoking and or vaping around your child not only puts them at higher risk for asthma but it can trigger frequent asthma attacks Smoke from a wood fireplace can also be a trigger If there are wildfires close to where you live consider keeping your child indoors until the air quality improves Have a plan Work with your health care provider on having a plan in place if your child has an asthma attack Often children with asthma are prescribed medication that can act quickly to open your child s airways If your child has asthma ensure they have access to this medication at home and at school If your child has been placed on daily medication for their asthma encourage and help your child to remember to take these medications daily as prescribed This will help prevent attacks from happening Lastly confirm your child has access to a peak flow meter and that both of you know how to use it and what the numbers mean Asthma attacks can be scary follow these tips to reduce your child s risk and frequency of attacks Stay healthy Getting enough sleep 8 10 hours for a child regular activity at least 60 minutes each day and eating a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in sugar can help a child achieve a healthy weight which improve breathing Viral and bacterial infections can make asthma worse too teach your child proper hand hygiene and to cough and sneeze into their sleeve to help prevent infections keeping your child current on their vaccinations 10 www southernidahokids com Bryan Gourley MSN St Luke s Pulmonology Nurse Practitioner Sponsored by
