MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 AMERICAN PRIDE I Pledge Allegiance To the Flag Of the United States of America And to the Republic For Which it Stands One Nation Under God Indivisible With Liberty And Justice For All HOW THE PLEDGE CAME TO BE The October 12 1892 Columbus Day celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America was planned for years in advance and anticipated much as modern Americans look forward to and plan for the advent of a new century The United States had recovered from most of the effects of its Civil War that began 30 years earlier and people from around the world were flocking to the Land of Opportunity The previous year almost a half million immigrants had entered the United States through the Barge Office in Battery Park New York and on New Years day of 1892 the new Federal Bureau of Receiving s station at Ellis Island had opened Two men interested in both education and planned Columbus Day celebrations around our Nation s 44 states were Francis Bellamy and James Upham To this day it is still unknown which of the two men actually authored the words that were to become the Pledge of Allegiance It was published anonymously and not copyrighted James Upham was an employee of the Boston publishing firm that produced The Youth s Companion in which it first appeared Francis Bellamy was an educator who served as chairman of the National committee of educators and civic leaders who were planning the Columbus Day activities What we do know for certain is that the words first appeared in the September 8 1892 issue of The Youth s Companion and a month later more than 12 million school children recited the words for the first time in schools across the nation Our Pledge of Allegiance was born but like anything new it took many years to reach maturity and underwent several changes along the way That first Pledge of Allegiance read I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO MY FLAG AND TO THE REBUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL OCTOBER 11 1892 After the Columbus Day celebration the Pledge to the Flag became a popular daily routine in America s public schools but gained little attention elsewhere for almost 25 years Finally on Flag 11

Page 12

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 HOW THE PLEDGE CAME TO BE CONTINUED day took note of the wording in the Pledge There was concern that with the number of immigrants now living in the United States there might be some confusion when the words My Flag were recited To correct this the pledge was altered to read I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES AND TO THE REBUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL JUNE 14 1923 The following year the wording was changed again to read I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REBUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL JUNE 14 1924 The Pledge of Allegiance continued to be recited daily by children in schools across America and gained heightened popularity among adults during the patriotic fervor created by World War II It still was an unofficial pledge until June 22 1942 when the United States Congress included the Pledge to the Flag in the United States Flag Code Title 36 This was the first Official sanction given to the words that had been recited each day by children for almost fifty years One year after receiving this official sanction the U S Supreme Court ruled that school children could not be forced to recite the Pledge as part of their daily routine In 1945 the Pledge to the Flag received its official title as The Pledge of Allegiance The last change in the Pledge of Allegiance occurred on June 14 Flag Day 1954 when President Dwight D Eisenhower approved adding the words under God As he authorized this change he said In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America s heritage and future in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country s most powerful resource in peace and war This was the last change made to the Pledge of Allegiance The 23 words what had been initially penned for a Columbus Day celebration now comprised a Thirty one profession of loyalty and devotion to not only a flag but to a way of life the American ideal Those words now read I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REBUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL JUNE 14 1954 In 1892 1923 1924 and 1954 the American people demonstrated enough concern about the actual words in the Pledge to make some necessary changes Today there may be a tendency among many Americans to recite by rote with little thought for the words themselves Before continuing with our tour let s examine these 31 words a little more thoroughly 12

Page 13

THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE WHAT IT REALLY MEANS I Pledge Allegiance I Promise to be faithful and true Promise my loyalty to the flag to the emblem that stands for and represents of the United States all 50 states each of them individual and individually represented on the flag of America yet formed into a UNION of one Nation and to the Republic And I also pledge my loyalty to the Government that is itself a Republic a form of government where the PEOPLE are sovereign for which it stands this government also being represented by the Flag to which I promise loyalty one Nation under God These 50 individual states are united as a single Republic under the Divine providence of God our most powerful resource according to the words of President Eisenhower Indivisible and can not be separated This part of the original version of the pledge was written just 30 years after the beginning of the Civil War and demonstrates the unity sought in the years after that divisive period in our history with Liberty The people of this Nation being afforded the freedom to pursue life liberty and happiness and Justice And each person entitled to be treated justly fairly and according to proper law and principle for All And these principles afforded to EVERY AMERICAN regardless of race religion color creed or any other criteria Just as the flag represents 50 individual states that can not be divided or separated this Nation represents millions of people who can not be separated or divided

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 From a speech made by Captain John S McCain US Ret who represents Arizona in the U S Senate As you may know I spent five and one half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War In the early years of our imprisonment the NVA kept us in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell In 1971 the NVA moved us from these conditions of isolation into large rooms with as many as 30 to 40 men to a room This was as you can imagine a wonderful change and was a direct result of the efforts of millions of Americans on behalf of a few hundred POWs 10 000 miles from home in which we lived had a concrete slab in the middle on which we slept Four naked light bulbs hung in each corner of the room As I said we tried to clean up Mike as well as we could After the excitement died down I looked in the corner of the room and sitting there beneath that dim light bulb with a piece of red cloth another shirt and his bamboo needle was my friend Mike Christian He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received making another American flag One of the men who moved into my room was a young man named Mike Christian Mike came from a small town near Selma Alabama He didn t wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old He was not making the flag because it made Mike Christian feel better He was making that flag because he knew how important it was to us to be able to pledge our allegiance to our flag and country At 17 he enlisted in the US Navy He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School Then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967 So the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance you must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world Mike had a keen and deep appreciation of the opportunities this country and our military provide for people who want to work and want to succeed As part of the change in treatment the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home In some of these packages were handkerchiefs scarves and other items of clothing Mike got himself a bamboo needle Over a period of a couple of months he created an American flag and sewed it on the inside of his shirt Every afternoon before we had a bowl of soup we would hang Mike s shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance I know the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important part of our day now but I can assure you that in that stark cell it was indeed the most important and meaningful event One day the Vietnamese searched our cell as they did periodically and discovered Mike s shirt with the flag sewn inside and removed it That evening they returned opened the door of the cell and for the benefit of all us beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours Then they opened the door of the cell and threw him in We cleaned him up as well as we could The cell 14 You must remember our duty our honor and our country I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 THE AMERICAN FLAG Did you know that at military funerals the 21 gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776 Have you ever noticed how the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 13 times You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies but we learn something new every day The 1st fold of our flag is a symbol of life The 2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world The 4th fold represents our weaker nature for as American citizens trusting in God it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance The 5th fold is a tribute to our country for in the words of Stephen Decaur Our Country in dealing with other countries may she always be right but it is still our country right or wrong The 6th fold is for where our hearts lie It is with our heart that We pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands one Nation under God Indivisible with Liberty and Justice for all The 7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death that we might see the light of day The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood and Mothers For it has been through their faith their love loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded The 10th fold is a tribute to the father for he too has given his sons and daughters for defense of our country since they were first born The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies in the Christians eyes God the Father the Son and Holy Spirit The 13th fold or when the flag is completely folded the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nations motto In God We Trust After the flag is completely folded and tucked in it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat Ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States preserving for us the rights privileges and freedoms we enjoy today 15

Page 17

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 Our Character Development program began 6 years ago by one of our assistants Dennis Stallard In its origin it was based on Jim Tressell s book The Winner s Manual We give each player a playbook that is filled with articles illustrating individuals demonstrating character qualities that we stress throughout our program integrity hard work compassion forgiveness teamwork overcoming adversity etc These articles are organized under specific character quality headings so they can be easily found The individuals highlighted in these articles range from former Manatee High School players highly regarded community members professional athletes and your average person Our players are to bring their Character Development playbook to each meeting and are encouraged to read through the articles on their own time Each Wednesday evening after practice our team and coaching staff will meet in the media center for 30 45 minutes to discuss topics pertaining to some of these character qualities We also invite guest speakers in each week to talk with the players This has been a huge benefit for both parties first our kids get to hear from another person sharing the same message but with a different experience or point of view Secondly it is a chance for these speakers to give back to the youth in their community Everyone that is asked to come in and speak to our kids are so thrilled to do so and many of them have spoken multiple years Some have a good upbringing and or didn t examples of my favorite speakers Char know who their father was It was a very acter Development nights are powerful night and one our kids spoke about for weeks after We had a former player from our 1992 state championship team speak about This off season myself Coach Stallard his very challenging upbringing his and Jim Nelson who serves as our father left when he was young and his Life Coach and has been a part of the mom was forced to raise him and his program and school for 25years met sister by herself His mom eventually several times to discuss what we can remarried however his mom and step do to enhance our Character Developdad were hooked on drugs and alcohol ment program Although we were very and eventually died from drug use when pleased with how things were going he was in high school At one point he we really felt that we needed to hit on was homeless and he explained what he specific needs that our kids are faced had to go through in order to overcome with Leadership was something that those extremely difficult circumstances we kept coming back to teaching our kids about leadership what that looks Another speaker was also a former like what it doesn t look like and try to player that was a scholarship athlete at equip them with the tools necessary to Florida Atlantic University who was in a be good leaders And how these leadernearly fatal car accident He explained ship qualities can help our kids in a real to our kids the long and difficult road practical way to make smart decisions to recovery physically and then the and sometimes tough decisions So last mental recovery when he was told that April we reached out to Frank Herold he could never play football again how who is VP of Marketing for Freedom it seemed his whole world was ripped Senior Management Group and works from him and how he had to overcome with a lot of companies in regards to that anger and confusion to get to the leadership and team building We also point where he is now reached out to Steve Shenbaum who is the founder and President of Game On And lastly one evening we had our which is one of the most respected firms coaching staff and a couple other in communication leadership and team guest speakers speak to our kids about building Steve and his company work fatherhood What it means to them with several professional and collegiate to be a dad They shared about the teams in addition to some of the largest relationship with their dad Some that corporations in the county Together had good upbringings and relationship the five of us met to put a plan in place with their father and some that didn t to equip our kids with leadership skills 17

Page 18

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 while continuing to develop strong character and integrity qualities that they are learning toward their teammates Our plan started with our coaching staff we needed to make sure that all of our coaches are on the same page and understand the vision that has been set to enhance our Character Development Program and ultimately the culture of our program We met several times throughout the spring football season and summer months We discussed communicating to our players other coaches and parents We also discussed our coaching philosophies how and why we coach and why our role as coach is so important And then our 3rd step in the process was to include our entire team with our Character Development program Even though we have changed the layout of our Character Development program a lot will remain the same We will still meet collectively as a team we will still have guest speakers come in and talk with the team Step two in our process was to meet with our Leadership Council Our Leadership Council consists of players who our staff feels are kids that are very influential within our school and team and who possess the qualities of a leader They are players at all different positions and grade levels Our goal with our Leadership Council is two fold first we want to teach and equip these players explaining what it means to be a leader A lot of times coaches say we need leadership or we need kids to step up and be leaders But the reality is they are never shown or taught what that looks like so we want to explain that to them Secondly our Leadership Council is essentially a liaison between our coaching staff and the rest of the team They are the players that support our staff and final decisions made by us often times having input on decisions made and exemplify the leadership 18 The great thing about our football program is that this is not just a Wednesday night thing for us anymore our coaching staff stresses these characteristics throughout the week which reinforces the lessons they are learning when we do have our Character Development meetings We are training our coaches to seek out moments when a kid displays something of high character or leadership but also using teaching moments when a kid misses one I m excited about the direction our Character Development program is heading I m thankful for Coach Stallard and his passion for starting this program Also I m thankful for all the community support we are receiving for this program I m thankful for our staff that believes in what we re doing and truly wants to see our kids succeed in their personal lives I would personally like to invite anyone to attend one of our Character Development meetings anytime JOHN BOOTH HEAD COACH

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 The 11 habits of a coach s favorite student athlete By Doug Samuels September 20 2016 The idea of coaches having favorites can be a sensitive subject for some people but if we re all being honest with each other we all have favorites in some form or fashion One coach even penned a letter I Do Have Favorites that talks about how he has favorites and why he s not ashamed to openly talk about it Now that we ve established that coaches have favorites and there s nothing wrong with that let s move on I wanted to take a look at what do we as coaches look for consciously or subconsciously in players before considering them favorite material and what can a player do to work his way into one of those valued coach s favorite spots To start the favorite players of coaches do what is asked of them and do it to the best of their ability and they get more instruction because more is expected of them and provide an important model for other players to strive to be more like To be a coach s favorite has very little to do with talent and a whole lot to do with a variety of other things Here I highlight the 11 habits that student ath55

Page 56

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 letes possess that make them a coach s favorite 1 They master all of the things that require no talent There is a graphic that has made its way around social media highlighting the ten things that require no talent A few weeks ago I took a look at those 10 traits and added a few of my own and they include being on time work ethic effort body language energy attitude passion being coachable doing extra being prepared the words that come out of your mouth your willingness to change have an open mind 2 They re ready to listen willing to learn and then immediately apply your instruction Something as simple as being coachable can go a really long way to being a coach s favorite It shows that you trust the staff and that the staff can trust you to do what is being asked and expected 3 They show respect to your entire coaching staff and everyone involved in the school and your program Favorites are often the guys who coaches send out to talk to the media or the community because they know that they ll represent the program in a great light Favorites are the kids that understand that perception and place an emphasis on representing the program and themselves well in the eyes of others 4 They are great role models in the community A lot of times favorites are the types of guys that exhibit the type of qualities that make them role models in the community They re the type of people who exhibit the type of traits that make it okay for your son or daughter to date them and that s one of the highest compliment a coach with kids can give a young person Favorites are the type of kids that you want those group kids playing touch football behind the bleachers to say Hey I m so and so 5 They always do what is in the best interest of the program A coaches favorite can t be selfish They often put their own wants on needs on the back burner for the sake of the program Sometimes that means doing something like switching positions outside their comfort zone for the sake of the team or stepping into more of a leadership role because that s what the program needs Coaches value that type of stuff a lot because it allows the highest chance of success for all involved 6 They make the right decisions on the field off the field and in the class56

Page 57

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 room Favorites are the guys that coaches don t have to worry about being a knucklehead and getting in trouble in class or bullying other students They provide a great example for others to strive to be like on and off the field 7 They don t miss those non mandatory activities Coaches like to say that not all team activities are mandatory but on that same note playing time is also not mandatory either Favorites often view non mandatory activities and workouts through the same lens as a coach and understand the important role that they play 8 They re fully bought into the culture and vision that the head coach and coaching staff have for the program It s impossible to go out there and truly give it everything you ve got if you don t believe in the vision that the head coach and his staff have Favorites are often the guys that are on board first and then bring others on board as time wears on 9 They never let their emotions get too high or too low Regardless of the adversity they hit or the highs and lows during a game they never let their emotions get too high or too low where they can t control themselves 10 They do the little things when no one is watching Picking up the practice field or wiping down tables after a team meal to make the clean up easier on the janitor and getting in some extra work with their back up after practice are all things that have a special way of going a long way with coaches 11 Coaches know that they can trust and depend on them regardless of the circumstance Whatever the team life or the season throws at them coaches know that they can depend on their favorites to rise above it 57

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 Goose Story Teamwork Stand by each other When you see geese flying along in V formation you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way As each bird flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following By flying in V formation the whole flock adds at least 71 greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another When the head goose gets tired it rotates back in the wing in another goose flies point It is sensible to take turns during demanding jobs Whether with people or with geese flying south Kiss honk from behind to encourage those upfront to keep up their speed What messages do we give when we honk from behind Finally and this is important when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot and falls out of the formation two other geese fall out with the goose and follow it down to lend help and protection They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies and only then do they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their group If we have the sense of a goose we will standby each other like that 61 TEAM When a goose falls out of formation it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go at it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take a advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front If we have as much sense as a goose we will stay in formation with those people who are headed in the same way we are

MANATEE FOOTBALL 2017 The chemistry of a great team 1 Must be worked at nothing for granted 2 All seasons are different none are the same 3 Founded on respect More than anything else men have fought and winners have won because of a commitment to a leader and to a small brotherhood where the ties that bind or mutual respect and confidence shared privation shared hazard shared triumph a willingness to obey and determination to follow And then in one of those great thundering jolts in which man s real motives are revealed to him in an electrifying vision I understand at last why I jumped hospital that Sunday 35 years ago and in violation of orders return to the front and almost certain death It was an act of love Those men on the line were my family my home They were closer to me than I can say closer than any friends had been or even would be They had never let me down and I couldn t do it to them I had to be with them rather than let them die and live with the knowledge that I might have saved them Man I now know do not fight for flag or country for the Marine Corps or glory or any other abstraction The fight for one another Any man in combat who lacks comrdes who will die for him or for whom he is willing to die is not a man at all He is truly damned Revere your fellow warriors because it is through them that you will be motivated in sustained through the difficult battles 62 TEAM CHEMISTRY Commitment is the thing Soldiers in the ranks have rarely over the ages fought for king country freedom or moral principle
